    Kerry E. DwyerKerry E. Dwyer, Boston College 1994, has rejoined O’Neil, Cannon, Hollman, DeJong & Laing, Milwaukee, where she worked from 2000 to 2008. Dwyer is with the Estate and Succession Planning Practice Group and assists clients in matters relating to estate planning, succession planning, and trust administration. During Dwyer’s hiatus, she worked as in-house counsel for a Fortune 500 insurance company and then moved out of the U.S. and held positions at international schools.

    Samuel W. JackSamuel W. Jack, George Washington 2008, has joined Dempsey Law Firm LLP, Fond du Lac, as counsel and focuses on municipal law, government contracts, and civil litigation. Previously, he worked as an attorney for the U.S. Agency for International Development and at law firms in Washington, D.C.

    Eduardo E. CastroAwais KhaleelTwo attorneys have joined Pines Bach LLP. Eduardo E. Castro, Minnesota 2020, is an associate and works with clients on criminal defense, civil and constitutional rights, political and election law, health law, employment law, environmental law, general civil litigation, and immigration law. Castro previously was the regional voter protection director for southeastern Wisconsin on the Biden for President/Democratic Coordinated Campaign. Awais Khaleel, Howard 2013, is an associate and practices civil litigation, civil rights law, political and election law, and several other practice areas. Khaleel previously was chair of the Wisconsin State Ethics Commission and a Dane County assistant district attorney, and he is a founding board member for the Wisconsin Muslim Civic Alliance.

    Anne FlinchumEric JohnsonAnne Flinchum, Marquette 2016, and Eric Johnson, Northern Illinois 2008, have joined Ruder Ware. Flinchum, based in the Green Bay office, handles litigation matters for business and nonprofit clients in the areas of business, employment, and real estate. Before joining Ruder Ware, she gained extensive experience in creditors’ rights and civil litigation practice. Johnson, based in the Wausau office, focuses on complex litigation matters. He previously concentrated on insurance defense and transactional work.

    Robert Mathers, William Mitchell 1990, has joined Quarles & Brady LLP’s Milwaukee office as a partner in the Business Law and Tax Law Practice Groups and provides advice to businesses and business owners with a focus on tax planning, tax code interpretation, and tax ramifications on corporate transactions and individuals’ private wealth. He also helps individuals and families create personalized estate plans and trusts. Mathers previously was shareholder and chair of the tax section at a Wisconsin-based law firm.

    Davis RundeDavis Runde, U.W. 2017, has joined Weld Riley S.C., Wausau, as an associate. He previously was assistant district attorney and interim deputy district attorney for Marathon County, focusing on cases involving felony sexual assaults, domestic violence, and financial crimes.

    Adam J. SchleisAdam J. Schleis, U.W. 2014, has joined Gimbel, Reilly, Guerin & Brown LLP, Milwaukee, with the criminal defense, guardianship, and juvenile group. Schleis previously was with the Wisconsin State Public Defender’s Office and also has coached high school mock trial teams.

    Victoria L. SeltunChristopher R. SmithMorgan L. TurnerThree attorneys have joined von Briesen & Roper s.c. Victoria L. Seltun, William Mitchell 1992, a shareholder in the Eau Claire office, has experience in all areas of public- and private-sector labor and employment law and holds a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the Workplace Certificate from the University of Southern Florida MUMA College of Business. Christopher R. Smith, Marquette 2004, a shareholder in the Milwaukee office, focuses on real estate development, eminent domain, and property tax matters. Morgan L. Turner, Marquette 2007, an associate in the Waukesha office, is a member of the Trusts and Estate Section and focuses on estate planning and trust administration.

    Appointments, Elections

    Owen E. Herrnstadt, U.W. 1985, has been confirmed by the U.S. Senate as a member of the board of the Export-Import Bank of the United States (EXIM). He previously served on EXIM’s Advisory Committee. Herrnstadt was chief of staff to the international president and director of trade and globalization at the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. He has taught employment and labor law as an adjunct professor at Georgetown University’s National Law Center and international employment and labor law at American University’s Washington College of Law.

    Kristen NelsonKristen Nelson, DePaul 2012, has been elected chair of the State Bar of Wisconsin’s Health Law Section. Nelson is an associate with Gimbel, Reilly, Guerin & Brown LLP, Milwaukee, in the healthcare law department.

    Awards, Degrees, Honors

    John E. Kosobucki, Marquette 1977, received the Meritorious Civilian Service award and medal from the Department of Defense, Office of the Inspector General, in ceremonies at the Mark Center, Alexandria, Va., in July 2022. Kosobucki is a senior official investigator for the Defense Inspector General’s Office.

    Laura J. Schumacher, U.W. 1988, is a recipient of the American Bar Association’s 2022 Margaret Brent Women Lawyers of Achievement Award. Schumacher is vice chair of external affairs and chief legal officer for biopharmaceutical company AbbVie in North Chicago, Ill. Her expertise includes legal affairs, corporate governance, communications, business development, and public and nonprofit board service, and she has been recognized for her efforts to increase diversity in the legal profession. Schumacher led the creation of the AbbVie Foundation, which empowers underserved individuals and matches employee donations to global nonprofits.

    Thomas K. Zander, U.W. 1977, is the recipient of the 2022 Howard B. Eisenberg Lifetime Achievement Award, to be presented by the Wisconsin Equal Justice Fund (WEJF) at a dinner in Milwaukee in October. The award honors those who have devoted significant time, talents, or resources to the provision or advancement of pro bono civil legal aid in Wisconsin. Dr. Zander’s career has displayed an extensive and consistent devotion to equal justice under law: as a trial and appellate lawyer, a class-action litigator, executive director of the Legal Aid Society of Milwaukee, a law professor at Marquette, and a forensic psychologist providing pro bono evaluations when retained by lawyers for low-income litigants.

    Matthew V. Hayes, U.W. 2000, is the recipient of the WEJF’s Distinguished Service Award for 2022, for his exemplary record of legal service to people in underserved populations. Hayes is director of the SeniorLAW program at Legal Action of Wisconsin, Milwaukee.
