    New Hires, Promotions, Partners

    Frank DeGuire, Marquette 1997, has rejoined the Milwaukee office of Quarles & Brady LLP with the Public Finance and Business Law Practice Groups. He serves as a bond counsel on tax-exempt and taxable financings for the benefit of state and local governments and nonprofit corporations, including conduit and qualified-private-activity bond financings. DeGuire, a United States Navy veteran, previously was general counsel for a diversified manufacturing company in Milwaukee.

    Hallie Heath, U.W. 2021 cum laude, has joined the Corporate Finance Practice Group in Dykema’s recently opened Milwaukee office. Heath has experience in wealth planning, real estate, and general business matters.

    Lance A. McNaughton, Washington & Lee 1997, has become a shareholder in the law firm now known as Duxstad, Bestul & McNaughton S.C. The firm has offices in Monroe and Darlington.

    Holly PomraningHolly Pomraning, U.W. 2008 cum laude, has joined Lake Effect HR & Law, Madison, a practice focused on management-side employment law and human resources, assisting and advising employers at every stage of the employment cycle. Pomraning is a trained and experienced mediator and previously served the Wisconsin Department of Justice as an assistant attorney general.

    Abigail M. Volberding, Vermont Law School 2011, has joined Burbach & Stansbury S.C., Milwaukee. She focuses on all family law matters, including divorce and paternity actions.

    Appointments, Elections

    Gov. Tony Evers has appointed Dana Wachs, Valparaiso 1985, to the University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents. Wachs is a partner with Gingras, Thomsen, & Wachs LLP, practicing from the Eau Claire office, and focuses on personal-injury, medical-malpractice, and product-liability cases. From 2013 to 2019, Wachs represented the 91st Assembly District in the Wisconsin State Assembly.

    Thomas A. Bailey, Marquette 1967, and Hon. Laura Lau, Marquette 1988, authored the recently revised edition of Family Law Casenotes and Quotes (State Bar of Wis. 7th ed. 2022). Bailey is retired from a family law practice. Lau is the judge for Waukesha County Circuit Court Branch 12.

    Awards, Degrees, Honors

    Michael F. Dubis, Marquette 1972, has been awarded the 2022 Dale E. Ihlenfeldt Bankruptcy Award, given to an individual from the bankruptcy bench or bar who has demonstrated outstanding work in the practice of bankruptcy in the Eastern District of Wisconsin. He is with Michael F. Dubis Law Office SC, Waterford.

    Pro Bono, Public Service

    Joshua L. Gimbel, U.W. 1987, accepted an Estrella Brillante Award on behalf of the Gene and Ruth Posner Foundation at the annual anniversary celebration of United Community Center, Milwaukee. These inaugural awards recognize individuals and entities that have made immeasurable contributions and are a bright, positive light in the community. The UCC provides programs to Hispanics and near-south-side residents of all races and ages in education, cultural arts, recreation, community development, and health and human services in an effort to help individuals achieve their potential by focusing on cultural heritage as a means of personal development. Gimbel is with Milwaukee-based Gimbel, Reilly, Guerin & Brown, a trial and litigation firm.

    Joseph Shumow, Washington Univ. 2007, took part in a two-day humanitarian aid visit to the Ukraine-Poland border, in his capacity as president of the Jewish Federation of Madison (JFM). JFM representatives brought over-the-counter medications and other supplies to people in need, regardless of their religious affiliations. Shumow is a shareholder in the Madison office of Reinhart Boerner Van Deuren s.c. and co-chair of the real estate practice.
