    New Hires, Promotions, Partners

    Lauren E. Burand, Iowa 2017, and Emily R. Turzinski, Marquette 2020, have joined Buelow Vetter Buikema Olson & Vliet, Milwaukee. Burand, previously a law clerk in the First and Sixth Districts of Iowa, focuses on providing labor and employment services for private- and public-sector clients. Turzinski focuses primarily on school law, including employee and student handbooks and school board policies; student discipline; special education due process; employee discipline and dismissal; and Americans with Disabilities Act, Family Medical Leave Act, and Title IX issues.

    Michelle Hockers, Marquette 2015, has been promoted to partner withMurphy & Prachthauser S.C., a personal injury law firm with offices in Milwaukee, South Milwaukee, Waukesha, and Mequon. Hockers focuses on motor vehicle accident, serious personal injury, product-liability, and crashworthiness cases.

    Alex Kay, Marquette 2018 cum laude, has joined Kay & Kay Law Firm, Brookfield, as a third-generation attorney of the Kay family. He focuses on mergers and acquisitions; real estate acquisitions, sales, and leasing; municipal zoning; business entity formation; nonprofit organizations; construction liens; employment and noncompete agreements; business litigation; and general business matters.

    Alex Koritzinsky, U.W. 2019, has been promoted to associate attorney for corporate litigation at American Family Mutual Insurance Co., Madison. He focuses primarily on employment litigation, discovery, and class actions.

    Kyle R. Moore, Marquette 2018, has joined the litigation practice group at Meissner Tierney Fisher & Nichols S.C., Milwaukee, and focuses on insurance coverage disputes, general business litigation, contract disputes, and employment-related matters. He previously was with another civil litigation law firm in Milwaukee.

    Art SchellerArt Scheller, John Marshall 1993, has joined Dietrich VanderWaal S.C., Wausau, as a partner. He previously served as of counsel to the firm and practiced in the Chicago area and has an extensive background in litigation.

    Katherine TompsonKatherine Tompson, Marquette 2020, has joined Stafford Rosenbaum LLP’s Madison office as an associate and focuses on family law.

    Cameron G. WeitznerCameron G. Weitzner, Marquette 2015, has joined Gimbel, Reilly, Guerin & Brown LLP, Milwaukee, as part of the criminal defense team. He previously practiced with the Wisconsin State Public Defender’s Office.

    Mergers, Relocations, New Offices

    The attorneys of Northwind IP Law S.C., formerly Wilhelm Law, have joined Davis|Kuelthau s.c. Thomas J. Connelly, Western New England 1976,has drafted and prosecuted numerous patent applications dealing with various mechanical devices and has handled trademark and copyright matters. Stephen C. Jensen, William Mitchell 1994, has extensive IP experience, including patent preparation; U.S. and worldwide patent prosecution, infringement, non-infringement, and product clearance analyses and opinions; client counseling; and litigation support. Northwind IP Law served clients throughout the Fox Valley and northeast Wisconsin region in areas such as agricultural and construction equipment, chemical products, food, medical devices, multilayered polymer films, optical devices, packaging, paper products, petroleum, and software applications.

    John J. HeinenJohn J. Heinen, U.W. 1985, has opened a private practice out of his home, 122 S. 79th St., Milwaukee. He previously was a Racine County assistant district attorney and a Milwaukee assistant city attorney. He focuses on litigation, contracts, residential construction, landlord-tenant law, defense, divorce and custody disputes, probate, and wills and trusts.

    Kopka Pinkus Dolin has opened its first Wisconsin office, at N19W24200 Riverwoods Dr., Suite 140, Waukesha. The office is led by senior attorney Eric L. Hafferman, Valparaiso 2002, who concentrates his practice on representing businesses and insurance carriers in all aspects of worker’s compensation litigation.

    Appointments, Elections

    Mike Aldana, Michigan 1990, has become chair of Quarles & Brady LLP, a national law firm with offices in 10 cities across the United States. Aldana continues as a managing partner and member of the labor and employment group at the Milwaukee office.

    Gov. Tony Evers recently appointed Reyna Morales, Marquette 1997, State Public Defender’s Office, Milwaukee; and Jon Richards, U.W. 1994, Ziino, Germanotta, Knoll & Christensen, Milwaukee, to the Milwaukee County Circuit Court. The appointments fill vacancies created by the departures of Judge David Hansher, U.W. 1968, and Judge Jeffrey Conen, Chicago-Kent 1985.

    Christopher M. SchererChristopher M. Scherer, John Marshall 1999, a partner with DeWitt LLP, Brookfield, has been appointed to the State Bar of Wisconsin’s Intellectual Property and Technology Law Section board for a three-year term. Scherer is co-chair of DeWitt’s intellectual property (IP) group. His domestic and international practice involves all facets of IP law, especially patent and trademark prosecution.
