Joshua P. Grube, Marquette 2003, and William F. Springer, John Marshall 2011, have become equity shareholders with Brennan Steil S.C., Janesville. Grube concentrates in criminal law, labor law, and civil litigation. Springer concentrates in real estate, business transactions, banking, and landlord-tenant law.

Three attorneys have joined the Law Firm of Conway, Olejniczak & Jerry S.C., Green Bay. Laura J. Beck, Valparaiso 1991, is experienced in divorce and paternity matters, drafting prenuptial and postnuptial agreements, and divorce mediation. John M. Calewarts, Marquette 2015, focuses on general corporate law, franchisees, and tax-succession. He also is a CPA. Robert R. Gagan, Marquette 2000, focuses on corporate and municipal law and commercial litigation. He was State Bar of Wisconsin president in 2014-15 and is co-founder of the Brown County Free Legal Clinic.

Claire E. Hartley, Marquette 2009, has been promoted to shareholder with Buelow Vetter Buikema Olson & Vliet LLC, Waukesha. Her practice focuses on representing school districts, municipalities, and private employers in all aspects of labor and employment law, general school law, and litigation. Carlos Eduardo Julca, U.W. 2011, has joined Keysight Technologies as counsel in the legal department, headquartered in the San Francisco Bay area. He focuses on mergers and acquisitions, tax, and other corporate matters.

Enku Edgar Lin, U.W. 2011 has joined Buting, Williams & Stilling S.C., Brookfield, as an associate and focuses on criminal law and civil rights litigation. Previously, he practiced criminal law as a public defender. He is on the board of Wisconsin Justice Initiative and Black Leaders Organizing for Communities and is a member of the state’s Public Safety and Criminal Justice Reform Policy Advisory Council.

Two attorneys have joined Lindner & Marsack S.C., Milwaukee, a management-side labor and employment law firm, as associates. James Panther, Marquette 2014, is with the worker’s compensation defense team. Christopher Saugstad, Marquette 2018, focuses on employment counseling, litigation, and employee benefits.

Oyvind Wistrom, Marquette 1995, has become the firm’s president.

John Salza, U.W. 1994, has joined the Milwaukee office of Wipfli LLP, a top 20 accounting and consulting firm, as a partner in its tax services practice. He focuses on providing tax planning and compliance support to clients in the manufacturing and distribution and private equity industries.

April K. Toy, Marquette 2010, has joined Milwaukee-based Meissner Tierney Fisher & Nichols S.C. as an associate focusing on commercial litigation. She previously was with Borgelt, Powell, Peterson & Frauen S.C.

Five lawyers have joined von Briesen & Roper s.c. Daniel J. Balk III, Marquette 2017 cum laude, is an associate in the health law section in the Milwaukee office and focuses on transactional, regulatory, compliance, and HIPAA issues for healthcare entities. Jacob J. Curtis, U.W. 2008 cum laude, is a shareholder in the government law group in the Milwaukee office. He previously was chief legal counsel at the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Matthew R. McGovern, Univ. of California Hastings 2004, is a shareholder and chair of the energy and clean technology section in the Milwaukee office. McGovern previously was the government affairs liaison for Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele.

Samuel G. Robertson, U.W. 2016, is an associate in the business practice group in the Madison office and focuses on estate planning, trust and estate administration, and general business matters. He previously worked in trust and estate administration at financial institutions. Peter J. Walsh, DePaul 1998, LL.M. taxation Univ. of Florida, is a shareholder in the business practice group in the Waukesha office and focuses on estate and asset protection planning and inheritance litigation. Walsh is a past chair of the State Bar of Wisconsin Elder Law Section and a member of the Wisconsin Attorney General’s Taskforce for the Reduction of Elder Abuse.

Mergers, Relocations, New Offices

Jane D. Clark, U.W. 1995, has founded Lake Effect HR & Law LLC, Madison. She is joined by Sheila M. Conroy, Michigan 1991, and Hannah L. Renfro, U.W. 2004, as well as a team of human resources professionals. Their practice is focused on management-side employment law and human resources, assisting and advising employers at every stage of the employment cycle.

Krekeler Strother S.C., a debtor-creditor law firm serving all of Wisconsin and based in Madison since 1982, has opened a second office at Arbor Terrace, 333 Bishops Way, Suite 156A, Brookfield. The firm also serves clients with financial problems, consumer litigation issues, tax debts, and personal injury.

Gregory S. Mager, Marquette 1997, has opened Mager Family Law LLC, 8989 N. Port Washington Rd., Suite 201, Milwaukee. He represents parties in all actions affecting the family, including actions to affirm marriages, annulment, divorce, legal separation, custody, placement, child support, maintenance, family support, property division, and enforcement and modification actions.

Appointments, Elections

Christine Bremer Muggli, Loyola Chicago 1978, has been appointed to the Judicial Selection Advisory Committee by Gov. Tony Evers. She is cochair of the committee, which is responsible for interviewing and recommending candidates to the governor for consideration when he fills judicial vacancies. Bremer Muggli focuses her practice at Bremer & Trollop S.C., Wausau, on protecting the rights of accident victims.

MaiVue Xiong, U.W. 2010, has been appointed to the Judicial Selection Advisory Committee by Gov. Tony Evers. She practices with Weld Riley S.C., Eau Claire, and represents businesses on transactional and contractual matters including business formations, business purchases and sales, mergers and acquisitions, corporate governance, real estate, landlord-tenant law, and trademark and copyright law.

Kathryn K. Westfall, Marquette 2013, has been selected by the Wisconsin LGBT Chamber of Commerce for its Business Leadership Academy inaugural class. The academy develops and fosters the next generation of LGBTQ and allied leaders in the workplace. Westfall is with the corporate law practice in the Milwaukee office of Reinhart Boerner Van Deuren s.c., where she focuses on transactional, commercial, corporate, and financing matters for publicly owned and private companies.

Awards, Degrees, Honors

Chad Baruch, Minnesota 1991, received the State Bar of Texas Jim Bowmer Professionalism Award, presented annually to one Texas attorney for contributions to professionalism and civility in the practice of law. He is with Johnston Tobey Baruch, Addison, Texas.

James Casey, Dayton 1988, recently completed CPP/EU-DPO training on the European Union GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) offered by Privasee AB (Stockholm, Sweden). Casey is an attorney in Washington, D.C., and is an adjunct associate professor at CUNY, New York City. He was recently reelected to serve on the board of the State Bar of Wisconsin Nonresident Lawyers Division.

Byron Conway, Marquette 2002, has achieved board certification as a civil trial advocate from the National Board of Trial Advocacy. He is a shareholder with the Green Bay office of Habush Habush & Rottier S.C., where his civil litigation practice includes complex multiparty tort claims, auto accidents, and nursing home neglect cases.

Carli McNeill, Notre Dame 2010, received the Rising Star award from the Wisconsin District Attorney Association. She is a Kenosha County assistant district attorney. The award is given annually to the most promising young or mid-experience prosecutor in Wisconsin.

The Madison office of Quarles & Brady LLP is a 2019 Pro Bono Award recipient for outstanding pro bono work in the U.S. District Courts, presented by the Seventh Circuit Bar Association. For the past three years, a team of Madison Quarles & Brady attorneys has partnered with the ACLU of Wisconsin and the Juvenile Law Center to challenge and ultimately change conditions at Wisconsin’s two state-run juvenile correction facilities through class action litigation in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin. Attorneys with the team also have taken on at least one pro bono case per year in the Western District.

Tyler Richardson received the Paralegal of the Year award from the Paralegal Association of Wisconsin (PAW). He works at Ruder Ware, Wausau. Richardson received his A.S. in Paralegal Studies from Chippewa Valley Technical College in 2011. He recently received the State Bar of Wisconsin’s “Certified Paralegal” designation. Richardson volunteers his time for Wills for Veterans as well as the human resources committee for The Neighbors’ Place.

Michael D. Rust, Marquette 2006, received the Carthage College Beacon Award for 2019. He is executive director of the Winnebago Conflict Resolution Center, Oshkosh, and president-elect of the Association for Conflict Resolution.

Pro Bono, Public Service

Bremer & Trollop Law Offices, Wausau, has once again awarded scholarships for academic excellence to area high school seniors who have demonstrated extraordinary scholastic achievements. The Bremer & Trollop Scholar of the Month program is available to high school seniors who are nominated for recognition by their teachers from Wausau East, Wausau West, D.C. Everest, Mosinee, Rhinelander, SPASH, Marshfield, Antigo, and Lakeland Union High Schools.
