Dec. 2, 2020 – The State Bar’s Ready.Set.Practice. mentoring program needs mentors.

Ready.Set.Practice. is a volunteer mentoring program matching new lawyers and law students with experienced mentors who can assist them with law practice management, effective client representation, and career development.

If you are a lawyer with at least six years of practice experience and looking for an opportunity to share your knowledge with a colleague or a law student, this program is for you. Connecting with your mentee has never been easier, given the virtual format we have grown accustomed to.

As a mentor, you can help a colleague or law student prepare for:

• entering the practice of law or undergoing a transition to a new practice area;

• assuming new responsibilities;

• entering the profession as a new attorney, or entering a new role, including becoming a partner or a senior manager;

With the increasing number of retiring attorneys, the dwindling number of attorneys practicing in nonurban areas of the state could mean growing opportunities for those willing to relocate. Devote some time to a young attorney or law student, and give them a head start in the profession.

Participation Is Easy

This program is designed for busy lawyers. Mentors and mentees receive materials that allow you to get right to work, and, throughout the yearlong program, are asked to connect once a month. You can meet via videoconferencing, via a phone call, or even in person.

More About the Program

The program runs the calendar year, from January to December 2021.

Candidates for mentees and mentors are selected based on:

• reason for wanting to participate in the program;

• level of commitment to serving as a resource for future program participants; and

• geographic and background diversity to establish a strong foundation for the program.

Mentors and mentees who sign up for the yearlong program will be provided with video resources, receive a handbook, and have State Bar staff support for any questions.
