    Job Description

    The United States Attorney's Office for the Western District of Wisconsin is looking for a highly qualified attorney to fill a term position as an Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) in its Criminal Division. The term runs through the end of fiscal year 2029, at which time the United States Attorney’s Office has discretion to transition the AUSA to a permanent role within the office.   

    The AUSA hired for this position will primarily prosecute drug trafficking offenses, such as trafficking of fentanyl and its precursor chemicals. Additionally, the AUSA will prosecute gang-related crimes involving aliens, child trafficking, human smuggling, and firearms offenses. AUSAs write their own District and Appellate Court briefs. Therefore, strong writing skills are required.

    Security Requirements: Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication.  This includes fingerprints, credit and tax checks, and drug testing.  In addition, continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.

    Qualifications

    All applicants must be U.S. citizens. Applicants must possess a J.D. degree, be an active member of the bar (any jurisdiction), and have at least one year post-J.D. legal experience, which may include a judicial law clerkship.

    Applicants must have: (1) one year of experience as an attorney; and (2) strong analytical skills, including strong research and computer skills. Applicants must also possess excellent oral and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, good judgment, and the ability to work in a supportive, professional manner with other attorneys, support staff, investigators, and client agencies. Applicants must have a demonstrated capacity to function, with minimal guidance, in a highly demanding environment.

    Salary

    Assistant United States Attorney's pay is administratively determined based, in part, on the number of years of professional attorney experience. The range of total pay is $76,748 to $197,100 which includes 17.06% locality pay
