The Verona Area School District is looking for a Director of Compliance and Policy that will plan, organize, direct and provide professional legal services and counsel to the District in a wide variety of legal matters such as labor and employment, employee and student investigations, Title IX, public records request, student rights, enrollment matters, real estate, litigation, liability, and school bonds. This person will serve as the primary legal advisor and represent the District before a variety of administrative and legislative bodies. The Director of Compliance and Policy will be a key member of the District’s Cabinet Team.

The Verona Area School District (VASD) is a PreK – 12 public school district of approximately 5,900 students located near Madison, WI. VASD is a growing school district with 10 schools including three charter schools and a two-way immersion Spanish program. Our incredible VASD student body is 40% non-white, 27% receive free or reduced lunches, 14% percentage are English Learners and 8% receive special education services. Our staff is 850+ strong between all positions including full and part-time. The school district is comprised of 10 buildings and we have a total of 1.5M square feet under roof on nearly 325 total acres.
Essential Job Functions including, but not limited to:
- Serve as general counsel for the Verona Area School District (VASD)
- Lead internal investigations on behalf of the district concerning employee and student violations of district policy/administrative rules, discrimination, harassment, bullying, and any other legal-related matters.
- Provide guidance and responses to Public Records Requests in collaboration with Public Information Officer.
- Provide representation in court and other administrative processes
- Monitor, review, and comment on policies and procedures implemented by the school district and Board of Education.
- Develop and lead VASD’s legal resources and policy programs.
- Serve as Title IX Coordinator.
Qualifications:
- Juris Doctorate from accredited law school
- Three years of law experience
- License to practice law in the State of Wisconsin
- Prior legal experience in school law or in-house labor relations preferred
- Bilingual skills are highly valued but not required

Salary, Benefits, Length of Contract: This position works a year round (12 month) contract with starting compensation based on experience that will be no less than $145,957 with an exceptional benefits and time-off package.
