    Director – Public Defender's Office

    EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    Plans, organizes, and directs a program for providing legal counsel and representation to qualified  persons accused of criminal offenses.

    Formulates and applies policies related to the Public Defender's Office

    Assigns criminal calendar to appropriate staff members and consults with staff on the conduct of cases in progress and gives advice and assistance as necessary

    Discuss the public defense program with judges, prosecutors, law enforcement officials, and other persons to obtain information and possible action relative to defendants.

    Serve as Defense Counsel for qualified enrolled tribal defendants charged with crimes and personally appear in court as defense attorney of cases or at arraignment appearing in Menominee Tribal Court. 

    Perform the duties as enumerated under Chapter 98-18 of the Tribal Code.

    Develop positions descriptions and hire department staff as authorized under grants or tribal sources that fund the department and supervise, plan, organize, coordinate, assign, and evaluate the work of department staff, as well as, provide guidance and training as needed.

    Manage the grants and other sources of funds that support the department, including completing timely progress reports and complying with grant special conditions.

    Maintain compliance with continuing legal education requirements and monitor the continuing education requirements of other attorneys in the department.

    Develop, review, and modify departmental policies and procedures that govern the operations of the department detailing daily operations, management, and eligibility requirements to ensure the department serves its function for tribal members in a trauma aware manner.

    Participate in Community Engagement activities, Community Focus Groups on drug activity and other functions aimed at establishing a Trauma Informed service delivery system throughout tribal government.

    Ensure departmental compliance with the Accounting Policies and Procedures Manual, Personnel Policies and Procedures Manual, and other guiding policies and documents of the Tribe.
