Marquette Law School completes move to
full-time legal writing faculty
Several years ago the Marquette University Law School transformed its
legal writing program, moving from a program staffed primarily by
part-time adjunct faculty to one staffed entirely by full-time faculty.
The move was prompted by a desire to provide students with full-time,
on-site teachers dedicated to legal writing and available for one-on-one
conferences. Last spring the law school hired the last of its six
full-time Legal Writing and Research faculty members.
"The program requires students to complete six credits of legal
writing and research during the first year," says Marquette Law School
Professor Shirley A. Wiegand. "It uses the same grading scale as other
law courses and now is fully integrated into the law school curriculum.
Students benefit by the increased availability, expertise, and full-time
commitment of their writing professors, and the rest of the faculty
benefit from their new colleagues' expertise."
The Legal Writing and Research faculty include: professors
Rebecca Blemberg, a former prosecutor with the
Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office; Melissa
Greipp, a former litigation associate at Kravit, Hovel,
Krawczyk & Leverson, S.C.; Jill Koch Hayford, a
former shareholder at Reinhart, Boerner, Van Deuren S.C.; Alison
Julien, a former litigation associate at Schott, Bublitz &
Engel; Lisa Mazzie, formerly in private practice; and
Jessica Price, a former litigation associate at Foley
& Lardner. Three of the six faculty served as law clerks to justices
of the Wisconsin Supreme Court.
Law School Dean Joseph D. Kearney supported the program changes early
on, and he could not be happier with the result. "The new program has
exceeded even our high expectations. Our search for the best and
brightest paid off. We've been able to hire an entire team of smart,
talented, energetic, committed legal writing and research faculty."
Kearney added that Wisconsin's legal community also benefits. "Good
legal writing and research skills are essential to good lawyering," he
noted.
