joined the Milwaukee office of Michael Best & Friedrich LLP as a

corporate and buyout transactions, securities regulation, and venture

Appointments, Elections
Daniel Blinka, U.W. 1978 cum laude, has been elected
president of the Milwaukee Bar Association. He teaches evidence,
criminal law, and trial practice at Marquette University Law School, is
of counsel to Stierman, Steffens & Kuphall, and contributes to the
Wisconsin Lawyer supreme court and court of appeals digests,
and to the Bar's Supreme Court Calendar service.
Orlando J. Cabrera, U.W. 1989, has been appointed by
Florida Gov. Jeb Bush as executive director of the Florida Housing
Finance Corp., which allocates present value tax credits, municipal
bonds, and other state and federal subsidies for affordable housing. He
previously was a partner with Holland
& Knight LLP.
Daniel J. Habeck, U.W. 1998, has been elected to the
Waukesha County Bar Association board of directors. He practices with

Daniel P. Koval, DePaul 1990, has been appointed as
the city of Madison municipal judge by the Madison Common Council. He
previously was a Madison assistant city attorney, dealing primarily in

appointed by Gov. Jim Doyle to the state Judicial Selection Commission.
The nine-attorney commission screens applicants for judicial openings
throughout Wisconsin. Conway is a partner with Liebmann, Conway,

and litigation, and business, commercial, and personal injury
litigation.
Toby E. Marcovich, U.W. 1954, has been elected
president of the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents. He is a

Todd J. Liebman, U.W. 1990, has deployed to Germany
in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Liebman, a major in the U.S.

Harlan A. Loeb, Minnesota 1991, presented "Managing
the Litigation Fall-out from Sarbanes-Oxley" at the eighth annual Forbes
Magazine CFO Forum. He is U.S. director of litigation support for Hill
& Knowlton, Chicago.
Mark McGarvie, Marquette 1981, coedited Charity,
Philanthropy, and Civility in American History(Cambridge University
Press 2003). He teaches legal history at the Marshall-Wythe School of
Law, College of William and Mary, and also teaches U.S. history at the
University of Richmond (Vir.).
Richard J. Podell, U.W. 1969, gave the keynote
address, "Equal Justice Under Law," at a conference in Edinburgh,
Scotland, in June. He is president of Richard J. Podell &
Associates, Milwaukee.
Hon. Charles B. Schudson, U.W. 1974, presented the
keynote address to the annual convention of the Wisconsin Coalition
Against Sexual Assault, in Wisconsin Dells in June. He is a judge on the
Wisconsin Court of Appeals, Milwaukee.
Awards, Degrees, Honors
William Bedker, U.W. 1996, was honored as Assistant
District Attorney of the Year by the Wisconsin District Attorney's
Association. He is a Dodge County assistant district attorney, focusing
on domestic violence cases.
R. George Burnett, U.W. 1981, has become a fellow of
the American College of Trial Lawyers, an honor extended only by
invitation to lawyers with a minimum of 15 years' trial experience who
have mastered the art of advocacy. He is a partner at Liebmann, Conway,
Olejniczak & Jerry S.C., Green Bay, and State Bar president.
Micabil Diaz-Martinez, Marquette 1989, received the
2003 Latino Citizen of the Year award in recognition of his work and
advocacy on behalf of Milwaukee's Latino community. He is the
administrator of the Wisconsin Equal Rights Division.
William Donaldson, Marquette 1993, has earned a
master's degree in public administration from U.W.-Oshkosh. He is
counsel to the Wisconsin Board on Aging and Long Term Care.
Major Joshua E. Kastenberg USAF, Marquette 1996, is
the 2003 recipient of the Thomas Bradbury Chetwood S.J. prize from
Georgetown University Law Center, presented to the student with the
highest academic average in the master of international and comparative
law program. He is the deputy staff judge advocate general of
Spangdahlem Air Force Base, Germany. He also is author of "A Three
Dimensional Model of Expert Psychiatric and Psychological Admissibility
in 'False Confession' Defenses," Seattle University Law Review,
and "Enforcing Internationally Recognized Human Rights Violations under
the Alien Tort Claims Act: An Analysis of the Ninth Circuit's Decision
in Doe v. Unocal," Franklin Pierce Law Review.
Hon. Mary M. Kuhnmuench, New England School of Law
1983, received the Milwaukee County Community Justice Gavel Award, for
having the "courage and faith to embrace restorative justice as a way of
helping both victims and defendants rebuild their lives." She is a
Milwaukee County circuit court judge.
Ann M. Murphy, U.W. 1979, received the Milwaukee Bar
Association's Lawyer of the Year award. Murphy, managing partner of the
Milwaukee office of Quarles & Brady LLP, focuses on commercial
lending and public finance.

Margaret Dee McGarity, U.W. 1974, was one of 10

Attorney General's John Marshall award for Trial of Litigation, for
prosecuting U.S. v. Flowers, a tax fraud conspiracy case
