June arrives with both a sense of relief and a sense of forward momentum. We pause for time to recalibrate, to enjoy the Wisconsin summer, and to take time with the people we love. At the same time, court calendars remain full, graduates enter the profession, and communities look to lawyers for steady guidance in times that often feel anything but steady. It is a moment that invites both energy and reflection.
Jill Rothstein, South Carolina 1996, is the executive director for the State Bar of Wisconsin.
At its core, the practice of law will always be a profession built on trust. Whether advising a client, serving in court, or volunteering time, Wisconsin lawyers help sustain confidence in our systems and in one another. That trust is not abstract; it is built case by case, conversation by conversation, through professionalism, civility, and integrity.
This month, I invite you to reflect with me on our roles as lawyers, leaders, and lovers of the law, and how we can strengthen that trust.
For some, it may mean mentoring a new lawyer or welcoming a recent graduate into your local bar community. For others, it may involve recommitting to pro bono service or engaging more deeply with your civic organization. Even small acts – granting the courtesy of an extension, listening actively, or offering a compromise – have a cumulative impact on our profession’s culture.
The State Bar of Wisconsin stands beside you in this work. Through resources, education, and opportunities for connection, we aim to support your success and reinforce the shared values that define us.
Thank you for the professionalism you bring to your practice and the service you provide to Wisconsin’s communities. Together, we carry forward a profession grounded in purpose and strengthened by its people.
