Edward E. Beckmann, U.W. 1999, has joined the St.
Paul, Minn., office of Murnane, Conlin, White & Brandt as an
associate, practicing primarily in commercial, environmental, and
employment litigation.
Lorna Hemp Boll, U.W. 1988, M.B.A., has joined
Thompson Plumb Trust Co., Madison, as vice president and trust officer,
working with existing trust clients and consulting with prospective
individual and institutional clients. She previously was a vice
president with the M&I Trust Co.
Mary S. Gerbig, Marquette 1994 cum laude, and
Cathy Priebe Hertzberg, U.W. 1994 cum laude, have been
named shareholders at Davis & Kuelthau S.C. Gerbig is a member of
the labor and employment, school law, and municipal law sections in the
Green Bay office. Preibe Hertzberg is a member of the estate planning
section in the Milwaukee office. James M. Kalny,
Marquette 1981, has joined the Green Bay office as a shareholder in the
labor and employment law section, focusing on grievance and interest

services. He previously was director of the combined city/county human

Joseph C. Mrazek, Georgetown 1997, has joined

Kathryn M. Buono, Marquette 1986, has been named
chair of the Quarles & Brady LLP corporate services group, which
includes more than 60 attorneys who practice in Milwaukee, Madison,
Chicago, Phoenix, Tucson, and Naples, Fla. Her practice areas include
mergers and acquisitions, private equity and venture capital and project

of managing partner of the firm's Milwaukee office, overseeing

Reddy, U.W. 2001, and Michael R. Sarner,
Marquette 1998, have joined the information technology team as
associates. Reddy previously worked in management information positions
and Sarner previously was with Marsh & McLennan, a national risk
management and consulting firm.
Ralph E. Johnson, Capital 1986, has become managing
attorney at the United Auto Workers (UAW) Legal Services Plan Office,
Janesville, replacing Donald R. Goldberg, Marquette
1975, who has become managing attorney at the UAW Legal Services Plan
Office, Milwaukee. Jason H. Klimowicz, U.W. 1995, and
Heather M. Rasmussen, U.W. 2001, have joined the
Janesville office as staff attorneys.
Mergers, Relocations, New Associations
Judith Sperling-Newton, U.W. 1981, Carol
Gapen, U.W. 1988, and Lynn Bodi, U.W. 1987,
have opened The Law Center for Children and Families at
434 S. Yellowstone Drive, Madison. Theresa Roetter,
Marquette 1993, and Jason Smith, New England 1998, have
joined the firm as associates. The five attorneys were previously
members of the Children's Law Center at Stafford Rosenbaum LLP, Madison.
They focus on issues affecting children and families, including
adoption, guardianship, visitation, custody, grandparent and foster
parent issues, and assisted reproduction.
Patricia K. Hammel, U.W. 1980, has opened the
Law Office of Patricia K. Hammel, 122 W. Washington
Ave., Suite 740, Madison, practicing in debtor bankruptcy, family law,
and estate planning. She previously was a member of the King Street Law
Collective.
James G. Nowakowski, Marquette 1983, and
Stephen J. McManus, Arizona 1993, have formed
Nowakowski & McManus LLP, 620 N. Mayfair Rd.,
Milwaukee, concentrating in worker's compensation defense, military
defense, and professional licensing matters.
The Stevens Law Office and Mallery & Zimmerman S.C. have merged.
John Stevens, U.W. 1964, will be resident shareholder
in the Cedarburg office, now known as Mallery, Zimmerman &
Stevens.
Jeffrey C. Thompson, William Mitchell 1992, has
formed Howse & Thompson P.A., Plymouth, Minn. He
concentrates on contract, construction, and real estate dispute
litigation. He previously was with Vest & Howse P.A., Brooklyn
Center, Minn.

Among the newly elected officers of the Dominican High School board
of directors are Mark Darnieder, Marquette 1978, chair,
and Phil Halley, Ohio State 1981, vice chair. Darnieder
is with West, Davis & Geraghty, and Halley is with Whyte Hirschboeck
& Dudek S.C., both in Milwaukee.

Steven F. Gruel, U.W. 1985, has been selected chief
of the Major Crimes Section, United States Attorney's Office in the
Northern District of California, San Francisco. Gruel previously was
acting chief of the Organized Crime Section.
Joel Hirschhorn, U.W. 1967, has been named president
of the American Board of Criminal Lawyers, a national honorary legal
society for outstanding criminal trial lawyers. Hirschhorn, a founder of
Hirschhorn & Beiber P.A., Coral Gables, Fla., focuses on criminal
and civil white-collar defense of corporations, business executives,
elected public officials, and private individuals. He also has been
appointed to the board of the State Bar's Nonresident Lawyers
Division.
The Leander J. Foley Matrimonial Inn of Court, Milwaukee, has

Robert Michelson, Duke 1972, has been appointed
Wisconsin state chair of the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy
Attorneys. He is with Michelson Attorneys-at-Law, Racine and Kenosha,
and limits his practice to representing debtors in bankruptcy.
Michael J. Pfau, Marquette 1964, and Anne
Willis Reed, Cornell 1981, have been
reappointed as court commissioners by Milwaukee County Circuit Court
Judge John J. Di Motto. Pfau is a partner with Hinshaw & Culbertson,
and Reed is a partner with Reinhart, Boerner, Van Deuren S.C., both in
Milwaukee.
Dennis R. Nolan, Harvard 1970, has been named by
President George W. Bush to the presidential board of inquiry on the
West Coast ports labor dispute. He is Webster professor of labor law at
the University of South Carolina Law School.
The Rock County Bar Association has elected the following officers:

The Wisconsin School Attorneys Association has chosen the following

At the annual Wisconsin judicial conference, state judges selected
six circuit court judges to serve on two court system committees. Judge
Steven D. Ebert, Drake 1976, Dane County; Judge
Donald J. Hassin Jr., Marquette 1981, Waukesha County;
and Judge Annette K. Ziegler, Marquette 1989,
Washington County, will serve on the Criminal Jury Instruction
Committee, which prepares model jury instructions for judges to tailor
for use in criminal cases. Judge Dorothy L. Bain, U.W.
1989, Marathon County; Judge Andrew P. Bissonnette,
Wyoming 1975, Dodge County; and Judge Dennis G.
Montabon, John Marshall 1972, La Crosse County, will serve on
the Legislative Committee, which reviews pending legislation and may
take positions supporting or opposing bills.

Authors, Speakers
von Briesen & Roper S.C. presented a health law
conference for health care executives on Oct. 22 in Green Lake. Issues
covered included regulatory issues, compliance, risk management, labor
and employment, and analysis of strategic and operational options.
Judge James Andrew Wynn Jr., Marquette 1979, who
sits on the North Carolina Court of Appeals, addressed the National
Hispanic Bar Association in Atlanta in October on the topic of judicial
independence.

Hon. Daniel L. Konkol, Marquette 1976, was presented
the Polish American Heritage Appreciation Award by Woodrow Wilson Post
#11, Polish Legion of American Veterans, Milwaukee. The award recognizes
community service to the Polonia and in the public good.
