Chief Justice Shirley S. Abrahamson, Indiana University-Bloomington
1956, delivered the 1999 John C. Paulus Lecture on Nov. 22, 1999, at Willamette
University College of Law in Salem, Ore. The lecture, entitled "Courtroom
with a View: Building Judicial Independence with Public Participation,"
will be published next year.
Richard Podell, U.W.
1969, spoke at the Belfast Conference for Family Lawyers of Northern
Ireland, Ireland, and England. The conference was held at Royal
Courts of Justice and was on family law issues in the U.S. over
the last year with an emphasis on human rights. Topics included
the Hague Convention accord on international child abduction, third-party
custody, and termination of parental rights. He was the only speaker
from outside the U.K. |
Liza Kessler, U.W. 1997, recently traveled to Berlin, Germany,
to speak to the leadership of the German Christian Democratic Party on
the problems with governmental censorship of content on the Internet and
less restrictive alternatives to help Internet users avoid unwanted or
offensive Internet content. Kessler also recently was on the nationally
syndicated public radio program, "Public Interest with Kojo Nnambi,"
where she discussed the First Amendment concerns raised by attempts to
legislate restrictions on unsolicited commercial email.
Timothy Harper, U.W. 1977, a journalist and author
based in Ridgewood, N.J., is the author of License to Steal:
The Secret World of Wall Street Brokers and the Systematic Plundering
of the American Investor. An Amazon.com business bestseller,
it is his ninth book.
Richard G. Baumann, U.W. 1964, of the Los Angeles firm
Sulmeyer, Kupetz, Baumann & Rothman P.C., has successfully
completed the requirements for recertification by the American
Board of Certification in creditors' rights law. He initially
was certified in 1993.
Irving D. Gaines,
U.W. 1947, the senior member of Gaines
Law Offices S.C., Milwaukee, is included in the millennium edition
of Who's Who in America. He has been listed in Who's
Who in American Law from its inception, including the millennium
edition, and in Who's Who in the World. He practices
in general civil and business litigation, and complex real estate
transactions. |
Dale J. Evensen, William Mitchell 1990, has been named
a rising star in the legal profession by Minnesota Law &
Politics magazine. Evensen, an officer of Cousineau, McGuire
& Anderson, Ironwood, Mich., joined the Minneapolis-based
firm in 1992. Recently admitted to practice in Wisconsin and
Michigan, Evensen has begun handling cases in both states.
Margaret W. Hickey, U.W. 1986 cum laude, has been accepted
as a Fellow to the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and
the Wisconsin Chapter of AAML. Hickey is with Becker & Hickey
S.C., Milwaukee, and practices in all areas of family and elder
law.
Kenneth E. Voss, Marquette 1960, has become of counsel
to Hurtado S.C., Brookfield, where he will continue his practice
in construction, general corporate, and probate law.
Clare Bader, U.W. 1997, was named 1999 Woman of the
Year by the Manitowoc/Two Rivers Business and Professional Women's
Club. Bader is an associate at Radosevich, Mozinski, and Cashman,
practicing in family law, bankruptcy, and personal injury.
Marc T. McCrory, U.W. 1986, a shareholder with Brennan,
Steil, Basting & MacDougall S.C., Janesville, has become
certified by the National Board of Trial Advocacy as a civil
trial advocate. McCrory practices in trial law in federal and
state courts.
Barry L. Chaet,
DePaul 1974, of Beck, Chaet, Molony &
Bamberger S.C., Milwaukee, was chosen as the Wisconsin Innkeepers
Association's 1999 Associate of the Year. The annual award
recognizes a commitment to excellence in serving the lodging
industry. |
Philip Lehner, U.W. 1973, an attorney with Capwell,
Nolden, Kallenbach & Grahovac S.C., Racine, recently was
honored by the Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce for completing
six years as chair of WMC's Worker's Compensation Counsel.
Lehner represents insurers and employers in all aspects of managing,
investigating, and defending worker's compensation claims.
Judge Daniel L. Konkol, Marquette 1976, was named 1999
Man of the Year by the South Side Business Club of Milwaukee.
Judge Konkol currently is assigned to a homicide and sexual assault
court in the felony division of the Milwaukee County Circuit
Court.
Maury D. Beaulier, a partner in the Beaulier Law Office,
Bloomington, Minn., was accepted as a life member in the National
Registry of Who's Who based on his service record to the
community and the profession of law. Beaulier practices in business
law and criminal defense in Minnesota and western Wisconsin.
Alyson K. Zierdt, Marquette 1981, a shareholder in
Reff Baivier Bermingham Zierdt & Lim S.C., Oshkosh, recently
was honored by the Oshkosh Chamber of Commerce as its first recipient
of the Athena award. The award is given to a woman who has demonstrated
outstanding commitment to her profession, the advancement of
other woman, and her community.

Philip Ankel, U.W. 1994, of Altheimer & Gray, Chicago,
has moved from the firm's Kiev, Ukraine, office to its Bucharest,
Romania, office. He will continue practicing in international
banking law and international mergers and acquisitions.
Michael Blumenfield, Drake 1984, and Georgetown 1996
LLM, taxation, and Susan E. Hanson, Drake 1980, formerly
of Blumenfeld, Rose & deJong S.C., have formed Blumenfeld
and Hanson S.C., Wauwatosa. The firm will focus its practice
in estate planning, succession planning, and general business
law.
Barbara L. Burbach, U.W. 1975, and Carlton D. Stansbury,
Iowa 1990 with distinction, have moved their office of Burbach
& Stansbury S.C. to 10850 W. Park Place, Suite 530, Milwaukee.
They will continue to emphasize family law, paternity, appellate
practice, mediation, and arbitration.
Stephen M. Compton, Marquette 1992, has opened his
own law firm at 517 E. Walworth Ave., Delavan. He will continue
to concentrate in litigation and appellate practice.
Dalebroux Law Office S.C. has moved from Casco, Wis.,
to 151 Commerce Dr., Luxemburg, Wis. Gary Dalebroux, U.W.
1975, practices in estate planning, farm and business organizations,

To better serve its customers, Firstar Bank Wisconsin and
Firstar Bank Milwaukee N.A. has changed its name to First
Bank N.A. These banks have merged as one to better serve
Wisconsin's financial needs.

Marquette 1986, Patrick J. Knight, Marquette 1975, and
Raymond M. Dall'Osto, Marquette 1977, have been named
partners in Gimbel, Reilly, Guerin & Brown, Milwaukee. The
firm has moved to Two Plaza East, Suite 1170, 330 E. Kilbourn
Ave., Milwaukee.
Pamela Lunder, U.W. 1980, of Lunder Law Office has
merged with Julian, Musial & Friedrich S.C. to create Julian,
Musial, Friederich & Lunder S.C. with offices in Madison
and Mt. Horeb. The firm concentrates in family law, estate planning,
real estate transactions, and criminal and traffic defense.
LaFollette Sinykin LLP, Madison, has joined practices
with Godfrey & Kahn S.C. effective Jan. 1, 2000. The
combined firm will offer a wider range of legal services, including
stronger litigation and appellate practices and greater access
to courts statewide. Godfrey & Kahn's practice areas
include general business law, corporate finance, patent law,
tax law, mergers and acquisitions, estate planning, real estate,
banking and labor, and others. Godfrey & Kahn has offices
in Milwaukee, Green Bay, Appleton, and Oshkosh. Godfrey &
Kahn's Madison office will be known as LaFollette, Godfrey
& Kahn, and located in the present LaFollette Sinykin offices
at One East Main Street.
Scott E. Mickelson, U.W. 1995, has opened a practice
at 5610 Medical Circle, Suite 32, Maison. He will continue his
work in general practice for traffic and criminal defense and
civil litigation, as well as real estate transactions, small
business, and estate planning matters. He previously was with
Giesen Law Offices, Madison.
Nola J. Hitchcock Cross, U.W. 1975, formerly with Podell,
Ugent & Cross, and Kenneth J. Murray, Loyola 1956,
formerly with Adelman, Adelman & Murray, have formed the
labor, employment, and business litigation law firm of Murray
& Cross. The new firm is at Lawyers' Building, 845
N. 11th St., Milwaukee.
Stephanie C. Stoltman, U.W. 1983, and Micabil Diaz-Martinez,
Marquette 1989, have formed the Law Offices of Stephanie C.
Stoltman LLC, located at the Columbus Office Building, 414
E. Walnut St., Suite 201, Green Bay. The firm practices in criminal
defense, family law, and juvenile law. Diaz-Martinez previously
was with Legal Services of Northeastern Wisconsin, and is fluent
in Spanish.
Weiss, Berzowksi, Brady & Donahue, Milwaukee, will
open a branch office with five attorneys in Delafield later this
year. Dean Richards, Marquette 1982, and Susan Marguet,
Indiana University-Bloomington 1980, have joined the firm and
will work at the new branch.

James E. Garvey, Minnesota 1954, has retired from his
law firm of 46 years, Garvey, Anderson, Johnson, Geraci, &
Mirr S.C., Eau Claire. He was an active civil trial lawyer and
active in Bar activities.
David Marks, U.W. 1982, has stepped down as president
of the Stella Link Redevelopment Association after a decade of
work on the group's unique urban renewal project, Stella
Link Campus Park, in southwest Houston. Marks will remain on
the association's advisory board.
