Name that Judge ...
Q: What Wisconsin appellate judge "grilled" U.S. Sen. Barry Goldwater on national television in 1956?
A: The Hon. Gordon G. Myse, Wisconsin Court of Appeals, District 3
In 1956 Judge Myse was enrolled in a program through Beloit College called "Washington Semester," studying government at American University in Washington, D.C. While there, Myse and his classmates attended the filming of the television show "College Press Conference." On the show, which ran Sunday afternoons on ABC, politicians and other prominent figures faced a panel of college students.
After the filming, Myse and his classmates had a chance to talk to the show's participants. "Based on my comments, the producers asked me to be a panelist on the next show," says Myse. He recalls that he and that show's guest, Sen. Barry Goldwater, weren't politically "sympatico." "Goldwater and other conservative Republicans had taken issue with one of President Eisenhower's foreign policies and he was explaining why. I basically accused him of not supporting the president. That stunned him."
