Nicholas J. Bertha III, Marquette 1975, previously of the U.S. Trust
Co. of New York, has joined the investment banking firm of Smith Barney
as a senior vice president and the national sales manager of the Smith Barney
Private Trust Co.
Tom Bottern, U.W. 1992, has begun work in the Office of Senate
Counsel & Research for the Minnesota State Senate, where he is counsel
for the Environment and Natural Resources Committee.
Ann I. Brandau, Hamline 1986, formerly a partner in Hoffman, Addis,
Pittman & Brandau, has formed A. Brandau Law Offices S.C. at 300 2nd
St. N., Suite 210, La Crosse. Her litigation practice focuses on family
law, personal injury, worker's compensation and appellate advocacy.
Robert J. Brill, Marquette 1992, has joined the law firm of Heslin
& Rothenberg P.C., Albany, N.Y. He is a registered patent attorney and
holds a degree in mechanical engineering and an advanced degree in electrical
and computer engineering.
Dennis D. Costello, Marquette 1967, has become the Walworth County
corporation counsel. He formerly was the Door County corporation counsel.
Lesli Hosford McLinden, Notre Dame 1988, and Brett K. Miller,
U.W. 1989, have been named shareholders in Davis & Kuelthau S.C. McLinden
is a member of the corporate law section. Miller practices in real estate
and commercial transactions. Thomas N. Shorter, Northeastern 1996, has become
an associate in the firm's labor and employment section.
Paula J. Desio, Marquette 1980, has been appointed deputy general
counsel of the U.S. Sentencing Commission in Washington, D.C.

Active Reserve Colonel John S. Hoff, Southwestern 1975, has become
Mobilization Assistant to Major General D. Bruce Smith, Commandant of the
Air War College, Maxwell AFB, Montgomery, Ala. Hoff was awarded a Department
of Defense Meritorious Service Medal and reassigned from the Air Force Institute
of Technology at Wright-Patterson AFB, Dayton, Ohio, to the Air War College.
Hoff formerly was an aviation attorney in Chicago.
James E. Hough, U.W. 1967, is expanding services in lobbying and
regulatory affairs with the addition of Robert I. Fassbender, San Diego
1983, and Patrick J. Osborne. The company's new name is Hough, Fassbender,
Osborne and Associates Inc. Fassbender was a partner in Godfrey & Kahn's
Madison office, heading up the government relations practice. He formerly
was an in-house lobbyist with Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce. Osborne
formerly served in Gov. Tommy G. Thompson's office as a legislative liaison
to the State Assembly and policy director. He formerly was executive assistant
for the Wisconsin Department of Commerce and deputy secretary of the Wisconsin
Department of Industry, Labor and Human Relations. The firm is located at
44 E. Mifflin St., Suite 104, Madison.

Former Rock County D.A. Scott McCarthy, Nebraska 1991, has rejoined
the law firm of Roethe, Krohn & Pope. The firm has offices in Edgerton
and Milton. McCarthy will head the Milton office focusing on trial work,
personal injury and business law, and will be available for general practice
work.
Patricia D. McMahon, Emory 1968, recently participated in a workshop
for judges at the Ministry of Justice Judicial Training Academy in Moscow.
The ABA Central and East European Law Initiative selected her as a faculty
member to conduct a criminal law training workshop for 70 judges from throughout
Russia. She also received the Emory University School of Law Distinguished
Alumni Award for 1996. She was selected to participate as a faculty member
for the Emory University School of Law Trial Techniques Training Program
in 1997.
Justin B. Nelsen, Iowa 1996 with distinction, has joined the law
firm of Meissner Tierney Fisher & Nichols S.C. as an associate, concentrating
in business litigation.
Timothy E. Newholm, George Mason 1992, has become a shareholder
of the Milwaukee intellectual property law firm of Nilles & Nilles S.C.,
concentrating in patent prosecution and related intellectual property counseling.
He is an adjunct professor at Marquette University Law School where he teaches

Timothy F. Nixon, U.W. 1990 cum laude, has become a partner at

Frank J. Parise, Valparaiso 1985, has joined the firm of Brookhouse
& Brookhouse. The firm will be known as Brookhouse, Richardson &
Parise. Parise will concentrate in personal injury, probate and criminal
defense. Parise was the full-time Kenosha County judicial court commissioner.
He will remain as a part-time court commissioner.
Patrick O. Patterson, Columbia 1972, a shareholder of the Milwaukee
law firm of Hall, Patterson & Charne S.C., is associate editor of the
third edition of Employment Discrimination Law, published by the ABA's Labor
and Employment Law Section.
Joseph A. Pickart, Iowa 1990, an associate in the Milwaukee office
of Michael, Best & Friedrich, has been appointed a member of the ABA's
Property Tax Subcommittee. Pickart practices in taxation law, emphasizing
contested matters with local property tax assessing authorities, the Wisconsin
Department of Revenue and the IRS. He is the author of the Wisconsin Chapter
of the ABA's Property Tax Deskbook and a contributing author to The Complete
