1997 Bench-Bar Survey: Survey Demographics
Of the 698 respondents:
- 28 percent were elected or federal judges
- 61 percent were practicing attorneys in Wisconsin
- 11 percent identified themselves as "other" (court commissioners,
reserve judges, and so on)
The most frequently mentioned primary areas of practice for lawyer
respondents were:
- general practice (17 percent)
- civil litigation (16 percent)
- criminal (12 percent)
Twenty-nine percent of respondents were from Milwaukee County, and 19
percent were from Dane County.
The breakdown was about equal as to when respondents graduated from
law school. Four periods (1985-96, 1977-84, 1969-76 and 1940-68) were
represented in roughly the same proportions.
