The State Bar’s Ready.Set.Practice. mentoring program is open for applications.

Ready.Set.Practice. is a volunteer mentoring program matching new lawyers with experienced mentors who can assist them with law practice management, effective client representation, and career development.

If you are a lawyer looking for guidance in learning a new practice area, or an experienced lawyer interested in sharing your knowledge with a colleague, this program is for you. Remember, mentoring isn’t just for new lawyers. It can be especially helpful at any point in your career when you are:

• undergoing a significant transition

• assuming new responsibilities

• entering a new role, including becoming a partner or a senior manager

With the increasing number of retiring attorneys, the dwindling number of attorneys practicing in nonurban areas of the state could mean growing opportunities for those willing to relocate. For anyone considering a move to a nonurban setting, the Ready.Set.Practice. program is a great way to connect with a local attorney and begin the process of acclimating into the community. Talk to any attorney who practices in a nonurban setting, and the first thing they recommend is to find a mentor.

How the Program Works

Time is precious, and this program is designed for busy lawyers complete with supporting materials that allow you to get right to work. Mentors and mentees who sign up for the year-long program, running from January to December 2019, will watch a short webinar training and receive a handbook. Mentors and mentees are asked to meet at least once each month and complete 10 activities together using suggestions provided in the handbook.

The handbook includes guidance that will ensure a successful mentor/mentee relationship, including:

• an initial meeting guide;

• mentor and mentee checklists;

• new lawyer mentoring plan form; and

• a full list of recommended activities for mentors and mentees.

As part of the program, mentors are encouraged to:

• introduce the new lawyer to the legal community in their geographical area;

• provide valuable assistance in moving from law school to legal practice;

• offer the opportunity to learn practical skills needed for the practice of law;

• provide the new lawyer with an experienced lawyer to turn to with procedural or ethical questions;

• enhance the competence, reputation, and professionalism of the new lawyer; and

• expand the new lawyer’s personal network.

In addition – you can make a new friend according to these two participants.
