March 17, 2010 – What’s new at the upcoming Annual Convention? If you are a regular State Bar Annual Convention attendee, read your program guide carefully so you don’t miss your favorite event – or a new one. This year’s convention will be held in Madison from May 5 to 7, at the Monona Terrace Convention Center.

    Evening events

Evening events switch nights this year. Jim Boll will be sworn in as the 55th State Bar President at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, May 5. All attendees are invited to attend a celebration immediately following the swearing-in ceremony from 5:45 to 9 p.m. Enjoy hors d’oeuvres, beer, wine, and soda at this free event.

On Thursday evening, May 6, all attendees are invited to the Attendee Reception in the Exhibit Hall, from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. Take advantage of this time to get to know the exhibitors, mingle with colleagues, and enjoy complimentary hors d’oeuvres, beer, wine, and soda. Immediately following this event, attend the Volunteer Recognition and Member Networking Celebration from 6:15 to 7:45 p.m. The State Bar will honor attorneys and law firms for providing outstanding volunteer services in 2009. Awards will be presented by the Legal Assistance, Lawyer Referral & Information Service, Communications, and Wisconsin Lawyers Assistance Program (WisLAP) committees, Public Interest Law Section, Senior and Nonresident Lawyers divisions, and Wisconsin Law Foundation.

    Daytime events

On Thursday morning, May 6, the Bench and Bar Committee will present the 2009 Judicial Achievement awards to Branch 4 Circuit Court Judge Benjamin Proctor and Reserve Judge Thomas Barland. The awards will be presented at 10 a.m., immediately before the Thursday morning Spotlight Program featuring Retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor.

In a break from tradition, the 50-year Members Recognition Luncheon will not be held during the Annual Convention. The State Bar will honor members who pass the 50-year milestone in the legal profession in 2010 at a special event on June 2 at the Delafield Hotel in Delafield.

Why the change? A large majority of this year’s honorees live or work in near proximity of Milwaukee and Madison. Delafield serves as a nice central location. Additionally, many retired members who spend the winter months in warmer states do not return to Wisconsin until late spring. It is hoped that the rescheduling of this event will make it easier for more honorees to attend.

    Program events

In the past all programming ended at 4:35 on Wednesday and Thursday with a half day on Friday.
