    Sarah Brown DeBruinSarah Brown DeBruin, Capital Univ. 1992, has joined One Law Group S.C. as a shareholder in the De Pere office and practices in business and contract law, trademarks and copyrights, franchise law, general counsel services, internet and technology law, physician and executive employment agreements, and Title IX investigation and procedures. She previously operated Legal Business Edge LLC, Appleton.

    Dennis R. McBride, New York Univ. 1980, has been elected mayor of the city of Wauwatosa. He previously served two terms as president of the Wauwatosa Common Council and spent 24 years as senior trial attorney and supervisory trial attorney in the Milwaukee office of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

    Peter M. Tempelis, U.W. 2006, has become a Waukesha County assistant district attorney. He serves in the newly created sensitive crimes unit, focusing on domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse cases; and prosecutes white-collar fraud cases. Tempelis formerly worked for the Wisconsin Department of Justice, Madison, and in district attorney offices in Milwaukee and Jefferson.

    Christa WittenbergChrista Wittenberg, Michigan 2012, has been elected shareholder at O’Neil Cannon Hollman DeJong & Laing S.C., Milwaukee. She is a member of the litigation practice group and focuses on complex contract disputes, shareholder disputes, class actions and whistleblower disputes, trademark and copyright law, personal injury cases, and healthcare litigation.

    Appointments, Elections

    Three Wisconsin attorneys are among appointees to the Governor’s Task Force on Student Debt. The task force was created through Executive Order #67 and is tasked with addressing the growing student debt crisis in Wisconsin.

    Karen Bauer, U.W. 2009, works with Legal Aid Society of Milwaukee, focusing on foreclosure defense, student loan law, unlawful repossessions, fair debt collections, and other consumer law issues. James J. Miller, Univ. of Miami 1991, focuses on bankruptcy law at Miller & Miller Law LLC, Milwaukee. Lara Sutherlin, Northeastern 1999, is the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection designee to the task force. She works with the Wisconsin Department of Justice, Madison.

    Richard L. Hillman, Marquette 1987, has been appointed judge of the 55th District Court by Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

    Michael S. Ariens, Marquette 1982, has been named the inaugural Aloysius A. Leopold Professor of Law at St. Mary’s University School of Law, San Antonio, Texas, where he teaches constitutional law, American legal history, professional responsibility, and evidence.

    Retirements

    Michael P. MayMichael P. May, U.W. 1979, retired on June 1, 2020, from his position as city attorney for the city of Madison. First appointed by Mayor Dave Cieslewicz in 2004, May also served under Mayor Paul Soglin and Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway. He is a member of the Board of Visitors of the U.W. Law School and of the State Bar of Wisconsin Senior Lawyers Division board.

    Joseph M. Nicks, U.W. 1975, has retired as a full-time lawyer with Godfrey & Kahn SC, Green Bay. He remains associated with the firm on an of counsel basis.
