    Assistant Corporation Counsel – Limited Term

    We currently have a Limited Term Assistant Corporation Counsel position that will be available through approximately December 31, 2020.

    Position Summary:
    This is a Limited Term full-time professional level position responsible for job duties as assigned from among the following: enforcement of actions involving Child Protective Services (CPS), Children in Need of Protection and Services (CHIPS) and Termination of Parental Rights (TPRs); handling cases and matters involving Planning and Zoning, including enforcement of Portage County Planning and Zoning Ordinances; assist with research, review and drafting of contracts; assist with research of legal issues raised by county departments and agencies; assist corporation counsel office attorneys with preparing opinions and memoranda containing legal advice for the county board, department heads and county agencies; assist with real estate matters; and assist with all forms of litigation which the corporation counsel office handles. This position will provide overall responsibility for all phases of assigned actions.

    • Chapter 48 "Child in Need of Protection and/or Services" (CHIPS) actions. Legal work as assigned and overseen by corporation counsel office attorneys and by Portage County Health and Human Services (PCHHS), pursuant to contract for services with the corporation counsel office.
    • Termination of Parental Rights (TPR) Responsibilities. Legal work as assigned and overseen by corporation counsel office attorneys and by PCHHS, pursuant to contract for services with the corporation counsel office.
    • Planning and Zoning Matters. Legal work as assigned and overseen by corporation counsel office attorneys.
    • General Municipal and Litigation Work. Legal work as assigned and overseen by corporation counsel office attorneys.

    What are the minimum qualifications?
    • Juris Doctorate degree from an American Bar Association-accredited law school
    • Membership in the State Bar of Wisconsin.
    • Legal and municipal experience (three years) preferred. The position requires a bona fide interest and/or experience for the law of Child Protective Services (CPS).
    • Trial experience in municipal law and juvenile law including termination of parental rights preferred.
    • Valid state driver’s license and access to vehicle with insurance.
    • Satisfactory completion of a thorough background check, including license check with Wisconsin State Bar.
    • Any combination of experience and professional training which provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities.
