    New Hires, Promotions, Partners

    Nicholas S. Barnhorst, Marquette 2005, has joined The Trademark Group, La Jolla, Calif., and focuses on domestic and international trademark clearance, prosecution, and portfolio management.

    Vicki Ridgway Barton, Brandeis 1996, has joined Gagliardi Law LLP, Paddock Lake, as an associate and focuses on bankruptcy, probate, corporate, and plaintiffs’ personal injury cases.

    Timothy Caprez Timothy Caprez, Loyola-Chicago 2003, has joined O’Neil, Cannon, Hollman, DeJong S.C., Milwaukee, and focuses on complex health-care and labor and employment issues.

    Rebecca R. DeMarb, U.W. 1997, has joined Kepler & Peyton, Madison, as of counsel. The firm has opened an office in Evansville.

    Scott Andrew Farrow, Marquette 1988, has become chief of the National Bankruptcy Training Institute at the U.S. Department of Justice National Advocacy Center, Columbia, S.C. He previously was with the U.S. Trustee Program’s Las Vegas field office.

    Emily A. Fey, Drake 2004, has been promoted to senior associate at Swendson/Menting Law Ltd., Oconomowoc, and continues to concentrate in estate planning, asset protection, and probate and trust administration.

    Andrew J. Fleming, Marquette 2007, has been promoted to managing director at McKinley Reserve, Milwaukee, a private investment firm.

    Mark F. Foley, Michigan 1981 cum laude, has joined the Milwaukee office of von Briesen & Roper s.c. as a shareholder and focuses on general civil litigation; bankruptcy, reorganizations, and workouts; global data privacy, security, and information management; and product liability defense.     Chad W. Koplien, Marquette 1997, has been awarded a direct commission in the Wisconsin Army National Guard as a judge advocate general corps officer and serves with the 64th Troop Command. He also is a business lawyer and commercial litigator with Lee, Kilkelly, Paulson & Younger, Madison.

    Timothy M. Hansen, Iowa 2002 with distinction, and Aaron H. Kastens, U.W. 2002 cum laude, have been elected partners at Michael Best & Friedrich LLP. Carroll is with the business law and health-care practices and previously practiced in Waukesha County.     Daniel P. Gustafson, U.W. 1996, has been elected to the State Bar Energy & Telecommunications Section board. He is a partner with Stafford Rosenbaum LLP, Madison, and focuses on energy, utility, and environmental law.

    Anthony Cotton, Marquette 2005, has been elected president of 180º Juvenile Diversion, and Peter Wolff, Marquette 2002, has been elected vice president of the program, which works with young offenders to help them change their behavior and avoid criminal convictions.     Awards, Degrees, Honors

    Absolute Technology Law Group LLC, a Milwaukee-based intellectual property law firm, received the State of Wisconsin Governor’s Award for Federal Contractor of the Year at a ceremony in June in Brookfield.

    Dean R.   Dietrich Dean R. Dietrich, Marquette 1977, was recognized at the 2009 Volunteer Lawyers Project Awards Reception for his pro bono contributions to successful efforts to obtain a Wisconsin Supreme Court rule concerning interest on lawyers’ trust accounts. He is with Ruder Ware LLSC, Wausau.

    Richard J. Rakita, Marquette 1970, and his wife received an award from the Jewish National Fund and the Jewish Home and Care Center in honor of their years of service and leadership on behalf of the home. He is head of the real estate practice group at Weiss Berzowski Brady LLP, Milwaukee and Delafield.

    Barbara Zabawa, U.W. 2001, has received Fellow status with the American College of Healthcare Executives and also has been elected chair of the State Bar Health Law Section. She practices health law and intellectual property and business law litigation with the Madison office of Whyte Hirschboeck Dudek S.C.
