New Eastern District Bar Association seeks
members
The Eastern District of Wisconsin Bar Association (EDBA) was created
last spring for practitioners and court personnel in the U.S. District
Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin.

"We are grateful for the support of the court and the practitioners
located throughout the district in creating this new bar group," says
EDBA President Nathan A. Fishbach, Whyte Hirschboeck Dudek, Milwaukee.
"The EDBA will better serve the public and provide valuable
contributions to the legal community."
The new association is modeled after the Western District of
Wisconsin Bar Association and will engage in a variety of activities
relating to the district's federal courts. The EDBA, which has more than
170 members, will serve as a vehicle for the civil, criminal, and
bankruptcy liaison committees to communicate with members and the
judiciary about issues of mutual concern, present CLE on current topics
in federal practice, and provide a newsletter on proposed rule changes
affecting Eastern District practitioners. A pro bono program will
promote providing counsel to low- income litigants.
President-elect William Mulligan, Davis & Kuelthau, Milwaukee,
noted, "We need members to serve on committees that analyze
court-related issues and make recommendations to the court on matters
concerning the bar, litigants, and practice in the Eastern District.
Committee options include CLE/Meetings, Civil Liaison,
Communications/Publications, Criminal Liaison, Pro Bono, Bankruptcy
Liaison, and Technology."
Fishbach and Mulligan commended Chief Judge J.P. Stadtmueller and
attorneys Michael Guerin and Hannah Dugan, who were instrumental in the
group's formation.
Other 2002-03 officers include: Secretary James L. Santelle, U.S.
Attorneys Office, Eastern District; and Treasurer Robert L. Gegios,
Kohner, Mann & Kailas.
Annual dues are $40 for private practitioners. Dues payment is
optional for full-time governmental employees. For a membership

Bar recognizes members of congressional
delegation for improving judicial system

The State Bar recently thanked Rep. Mark Green and
Sens. Russ Feingold and Herb Kohl for
their involvement with Wisconsin's Federal Nominating Commission and
their assistance in procuring a federal district court in Green Bay. The
newly created U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin
will provide greater accessibility to the justice system for individuals
in the northeastern part of the state.
Green, Feingold, and Kohl were recognized at Hon. William Griesbach's
investiture as judge for the U.S. District Court for the Eastern
District of Wisconsin in Green Bay in August.
"On behalf of the State Bar of Wisconsin, I would like to
congratulate Judge Griesbach as he officially becomes the newest member
of the federal bench," State Bar President Pat Ballman said. "This day
would not have been possible had it not been for the tireless efforts of
a few Wiscon-sin legislators. Through their hard work and great
leadership, Senator Kohl and Congressman Green secured funding for the
federal court in Green Bay. By making appointments to Wisconsin's
Federal Nominating Commission, Senators Feingold and Kohl greatly aided
in the nomination and selection process."
The State Bar's Board of Governors approved resolutions recognizing
these individuals at its May meeting. The board also approved
resolutions thanking Reps. F. James Sensenbrenner and Tammy Baldwin, who
were recognized at ceremonies in July, for their efforts as members of
the House Judiciary Committee.
State Bar offers live interactive CLE master
advocate satellite series
State Bar CLE Seminars recently partnered with Business
Professionals' Network Inc., a Washington-based continuing professional
education provider, to bring live CLE satellite programs to Wisconsin.
"The Master Advocate Institute Series"TM is a series of trial
advocacy and litigation seminars designed to become a complete resource
for lawyers involved in litigation. The first program, "Avoiding
Ambushes and Minefields in the Courtroom," was broadcast in July to six
sites across the state.
"Interactive programming is a cost-efficient method that provides the
capability to communicate with nationally known experts, thus delivering
a high-quality CLE experience, while meeting our objective of
continually improving services provided to our members," says Tom Dixon,
State Bar CLE director.
The second program in the series, "The Art of Winning Before Trial,"
will be broadcast on Oct. 25 in Eau Claire, Green Bay, Madison,
Milwaukee, Oshkosh, and Wausau from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The program,
featuring several of the nation's leading trial lawyers, will focus on
the latest federal discovery rules and practice tips that lead to
