Looking Ahead
Incoming President Patricia Ballman has outlined three goals she is
committed to working on during her term: spearheading an effort to
educate the public about the value of the legal profession; continuing
the fight for government funding of civil legal services for the
indigent; and improving diversity within the legal profession.
In addition, Ballman will work with the Legal History Committee to
plan a momentous birthday party. In 2003 the State Bar will celebrate
its 125th anniversary, the Wisconsin Supreme Court will celebrate its
150th, and the Court of Appeals will celebrate its 25th. In FY02
President Mowris and Chief Justice Shirley Abrahamson appointed a
committee to plan events and projects to celebrate the
anniversaries.
Beginning this fall, the Wisconsin Lawyer magazine will
feature early supreme court justices who shaped our legal history. Other
celebrations may include oral histories of past bar presidents and other
influential members of Wisconsin's legal community, presentations for
service organizations and professional groups statewide, a traveling
exhibit that showcases famous supreme court cases, and a spotlight CLE
program at the Annual Convention in May.
