David A. Bretl, U.W. 1989, has been appointed administrative coordinator
for Walworth County. He formerly was Wauwatosa City Attorney.

Robert D. Ebbe, U.W. 1995, has been elected president of the State
Bar's Young Lawyers Division. Ebbe is a member of the health law practice
group of von Briesen, Purtell & Roper S.C., Madison.
The Eau Claire County Bar Association has elected these officers: president
- Ann W. Johnson; president-elect - Michael J. Happe; secretary
- Jon M. Theisen; and treasurer - Kristina M. Bourget, all
of Eau Claire.
David A. Erne, Harvard 1968, a shareholder in Reinhart, Boerner,
Van Deuren, Norris & Rieselbach S.C., has been appointed by the board
of trustees of Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co. to serve on its
policyowners' examining committee. The committee consists of three to
five business people from around the nation who work independently with
the trustees in representing Northwestern Mutual's policyowners on company
operations, management, and strategic plans.

James D. Friedman, Notre Dame 1972, a partner in Quarles & Brady
LLP, Milwaukee, has been elected a fellow of the Wisconsin Law Foundation.
Fellows are elected for their outstanding achievement in the practice
of law, contributions to the welfare of their communities, and service
in the advancement of the profession in Wisconsin.
The Iowa County Bar Association has elected these officers: president
- Ted N. Frank, Dodgeville; president-elect - Peter J. Pfotenhauer,
Mineral Point; and secretary/treasurer - Margaret M. Koehler, Mineral
Point.
Jane E. Hosmanek Kaiser, St. Louis 1983, has been appointed to
the City of Franklin's Civil Service Commission, which consists of five
members appointed by the mayor and confirmed by the city council, and
oversees rules and regulations regarding city employees. Kaiser is owner
and president of Communicator for Hire Inc., Franklin.
The Lafayette County Bar Association has elected the following officers:

Charles P. Fischbach, U.W. 1967, has been asked to speak on "Differences
Between Labor and Employment Disputes Arbitration," at the Seyfarth Shaw
Symposium, held this year in Chicago, Boston, and Los Angeles.
Peter J. Walsh, DePaul 1998, LL.M. - Taxation University of Florida
1999, has written an article entitled "Save Transfer Taxes with Family
Limited Partnerships" published in the June 2001 Tax Strategies (an RIA
publication).

Public Service
The La Crosse Bar Association's annual golf outing benefits Jim's Grocery
Bag Fund at the La Crosse Community Foundation. The fund was started by
attorney Jim Gokey of Johns, Flaherty & Rice, La Crosse, because many
students at Hamilton Elementary School were going hungry when school was
out. Gokey organized food drives at La Crosse law firms for the Hamilton
Food Pantry to help the children. An endowment was established at the
La Crosse Community Foundation when Gokey died in 1998.

Daniels
|
John W. Daniels Jr., Harvard 1974, will receive the 2001 Human
Relations Award from the National Conference for Community and Justice
(NCCJ). NCCJ is dedicated to fighting bias, bigotry, and racism in America,
and promotes understanding through advocacy, conflict resolution, and
education. Daniels is a partner in Quarles & Brady LLP, Milwaukee, and
a member of the firm's management committee.
Carl W. Gilmore, U.W. 1994, was named Young Lawyer of the Year
from outside Cook County by the Illinois State Bar Association for his
community and law-related activities. He has served on the American Cancer
Society Board-McHenry County Unit, as secretary of the Woodstock Morning
Rotary Club, and assists the local Cub Scouts. He is a member of the editorial
board for the ABA's Family Advocate magazine and of the Illinois
State Bar's committee on law-related education. Gilmore is with Mohr,
Mangiamele, Bruce, Gilmore & Hafferkamp, McHenry, Ill., practicing in
family law.
William J. Katt, Marquette 1978, received the Defense Research
Institute's Outstanding State Leadership Award for his dedication and
service to the nation's defense bar. Katt, president of Leib & Katt S.C.,
Milwaukee, focuses his practice on litigation of federal and state cases,
including general liability, product liability, aviation accidents, fair
dealership, trade secrets, and other commercial litigation.
Robert W. Kohn, U.W. 1959, has been certified by U.W.-Milwaukee
in mediation and negotiation. Kohn's focus in mediation and negotiation
matters includes contract law, landlord/tenant issues, and family law.
Mark McGarvie, Marquette 1981, received a research grant from
the Baldy Center for Law and Social Policy to work on his third book,
an intellectual biography of noted jurist and law professor St. George
Tucker. His work on the project commenced this spring at the College of
William and Mary, Williamsburg, Va.
Julie A. Rausch, Marquette 1993, has been admitted to the Commercial
Law League of America, North America's premier organization of bankruptcy
and commercial law professionals. The league and its members are invited
regularly to provide expert testimony before Congressional committees
and other administrative agencies. Rausch is with Rausch, Sturm, Israel
& Hornik S.C., Milwaukee.
Joseph J. Shutkin, U.W. 1952, LL.M. 1953, was awarded life membership
in the law school old guard of the George Washington University. Shutkin
recently returned to the U.S. after 12 years practicing law in Jerusalem,
Israel.
U.W. Law School Clinical Associate Professors John Pray, U.W.
1986, and Keith Findley, Yale 1985, have been jointly named "Lawyer
of the Year" by the Milwaukee Bar Association in recognition of the success
of the Wisconsin Innocence Project. The project, which Findley and Pray
codirect, is a program of the law school's largest clinic, the Frank J.
