Wisconsin Lawyer February 2001: What is the State Bar's Internet privacy policy?

What is the State Bar's Internet privacy policy?

by Robert V. Petershack, WisBar Oversight Committee member

The State Bar of Wisconsin respects the privacy of visitors to WisBar and LegalExplorer, the Bar's consumer Web site. Both sites include a privacy statement that details the Bar's commitment to privacy. A link to these privacy statements appears at the bottom of each homepage.

The privacy statements address the use of information that visitors explicitly provide to the State Bar when visiting these sites (such as information provided when ordering a book or when registering for a seminar). Registration and order forms operate in a secure environment using software that scrambles email transmissions from users to our customer service representatives.

The privacy statements also address the use of "cookies" by the State Bar. WisBar uses cookies with its banner ad management (i.e., the display of advertisements on the site and the number of times visitors click on a particular banner ad). LegalExplorer uses cookies to facilitate the use of its online Lawyer Referral Service. In the future, as the State Bar works to improve the delivery of information on WisBar, it will use cookies to streamline the ordering and registration process by allowing visitors to store personal data.

Information gathered by the State Bar at the WisBar and LegalExplorer sites - whether through the use of cookies or when ordering a product or registering for a State Bar event - is not sold or provided to third party vendors.
