New Hires, Promotions, Partners
Brian K. Barton, Creighton 2001 cum laude, has
joined Moen Sheehan Meyer Ltd., La Crosse, practicing in estate
planning, real estate, business law, and trust and probate law. He
served five and a half years in the U.S. Navy and served in the
Wisconsin Army National Guard's 32nd Engineer Company, Onalaska. While
in law school, he was an adjunct professor at Metropolitan Community
College, Omaha, Neb.
John E. Murray, Iowa 1991, and Alan G.B.
Kim Jr., U.W. 1991, have been elected shareholders at Davis
& Kuelthau s.c.
Murray is a member of the employment litigation practice group in the
Milwaukee office. Kim is a member of the litigation and environmental
law sections in the firm's Madison office, focusing on construction,
land use/real property, and commercial litigation.

Patrick M. Donnelly, Golden Gate 1980, has been
promoted to deputy first assistant state public defender in the
Wisconsin Public Defender's Madison appellate office. He previously was
assistant state public defender in the Madison trial division and
appellate division offices.
Michael J. Farley, Marquette 1992, has joined the
Washington, D.C., office of Mayer, Brown & Platt. He will continue
his practice in government contracts. He previously was with Miller
& Chevalier, Chartered, Washington, D.C.
Gordon R. Shea, Marquette 1998, has joined CCH,
Inc., Chicago, as a writer/analyst. CCH, Inc. is a legal publishing
company providing business law information and software, and producing
publications on tax, business, health care, and other law in print and
electronic form for legal professionals.

Lance S. Grady, Marquette 1985, has joined the
Schroeder Group S.C., Attorneys at Law, Waukesha, as a shareholder. He
represents insurance companies and self-insured corporations on
liability claims and is a litigator. Grady formerly was with Hinshaw
& Culbertson, Milwaukee. He is a lieutenant on the Delafield Fire
Department.
G. Steven Kaminski, U.W. 1986, with Kaminski Law
Offices, Milwaukee, has been promoted to lieutenant colonel in the
Wisconsin Army National Guard and the U.S. Army. He has assumed the
position of command judge advocate for the 264th engineer group in
Chippewa Falls.
Tricia L. Knight, Michigan 2000 with honors, has
joined Cross Law Firm S.C., Milwaukee, as an associate focusing on
employment law. She formerly was with Michael, Best & Friedrich.
Daniel J. Finerty, Marquette 1998, Timothy C. Kamin,

Jeffrey A. McIntyre, Northwestern 1994, has joined
Whyte Hirschboeck Dudek S.C., Madison, in the litigation practice group.
He formerly was with Widman, Harrold, Allen & Dixon, Chicago.
Daniel R. Plane, Marquette 1996, has joined the Hong
Kong office of Baker &McKenzie. Plane will be an associate
practicing in the intellectual property group, focusing primarily on
prosecution, infringement, and anti-counterfeiting matters in the
People's Republic of China.
Peter M. Silver, Marquette 1987, has joined Kasdorf,
Lewis & Swietlik S.C., Milwaukee, as a senior associate representing
employers, insurance companies, and third-party admin-istrators in
worker's compensation matters. He previously was with the Law Offices of
Mark H. Miller as in-house senior trial attorney.
The U.W. has recently hired the following:
Catherine Albiston, Boalt Hall 1993, as assistant
professor teaching civil procedure, sociology of law, women and the law,
and law and social change. She holds affiliate appointments in sociology
and women's studies. Albiston, who recently completed a Ph.D. in
jurisprudence and social policy at Berkeley, previously practiced law at
the Employment Law Center, a project of the Legal Aid Society of San
Francisco, and was a recipient of a Skadden Fellowship to litigate some
of the first federal cases brought under the Family and Medical Leave
Act. She also was a judicial clerk in the Northern District of
California.
Anuj Desai, Boalt Hall 1994, as assistant professor
at the law school and the School of Library and Information Studies. He
previously was an associate at Davis Wright Tremaine, Seattle, Wash.,
practicing primarily in Internet, First Amendment, and intellectual
property law, including litigation in First Amendment, defamation,
news-gathering, copyright and trademark (both trial and appellate
level); drafting colinking and comarketing Internet agreements; and
advising clients with respect to First Amendment, copyright, and privacy
issues.
John Ohnesorge, Minnesota 1989, Harvard LL.M. 1995,
as assistant professor teaching business organizations, administrative
law, and comparative law. He will receive his S.J.D. from Harvard this
year. Ohnesorge was a judicial clerk in the District of Massachusetts
and previously practiced law in Seoul, Korea, and was a lecturer at
Harvard, coteaching the Pacific legal community seminar.

Shear
|
Richard Ross, Yale 1989, as assistant professor of
law and history. Previously he taught at the Univer-sity of Chicago and
Indiana Univer-sity (Indianapolis) law schools, where he won the "Best
New Professor" award. He has a Ph.D. in history from Yale and was a
visiting scholar at the Harvard history department. In his first year,
he will teach trusts and estates in the law school, and American legal
and constitutional history, the rule of law in historical perspective,
and a seminar on legal cultures in early America for the history
department.
Leslie Shear, Miami 1985, as clinical assistant
professor and director of the Family Law Project at the law school's
Frank J. Remington Center. She previously was a shareholder with Murphy
& Desmond, Madison, where she practiced family law with an emphasis
on divorce, child custody and placement, and support and property
division. She also worked in real estate and domestic partner-ships.
Shear was included on the Madison Magazine list of Best Family Law
Attorneys for 2001. She continues to be of counsel at Murphy &
Desmond.
Thomas K. Houck, Marquette 1996 cum laude, has
joined Gruber Law Offices LLC, Milwaukee, as a litigation associate,
continuing his practice in plaintiff's personal injury and wrongful

David R. Berman, Marquette 1993, has been elected to
a two-year term as chair of the board of directors for the Southeast
Wisconsin Tri-County Chapter of the American Red Cross. The chapter
serves Kenosha, Racine, and Walworth counties. He previously served as
vice-chair.
Patty Brzezinski has agreed to serve as the Native
American representative on the State Bar's board of governors. She is
past chair of the Indian Law Section and current vice chair, and is also
immediate past president of the Brown County Bar Association. Brzezinski
is an attorney for the Oneida Tribe, Green Bay.
The Civil Trial Counsel of Wisconsin has elected the following
officers: president - Patrick W. Brennan, Milwaukee;
president-elect - Wayne L. Maffei, Baraboo; and
secretary/treasurer - Bernard T. McCartan, Madison.
Mark Darnieder, Marquette 1978, with Darnieder, West

assistant state public defender in the Milwaukee appellate and trial
offices. Ruth A. Bachman, U.W. 1978, has been reelected
vice-chair of the Judicial Council. She is an assistant district
attorney in Barron County, and previously was district attorney in Eau
Claire County, assistant district attorney in Eau Claire and Ashland
counties, and assistant attorney general.

Stephen W. Hayes, Illinois 1969, of the Schroeder
Group S.C., Attorneys at Law, Waukesha, spoke at the special needs
adoption advocacy training program sponsored by the American Academy of
Adoption Attorneys in Savannah, Ga., on "Liability and Accountability of
Agencies and Adoption Disruption."
Awards, Degrees, Honors
Michael L. Brutlag, Minnesota 1980, with Brutlag,
Hartmann & Okoneski PA, Minneapolis, Minn., was selected as a "super
lawyer" by Minnesota Law & Politics and MSP Communications for the
fifth year in a row. The recognition is based on more than 5,000 votes
from Minnesota attorneys.
Gregg Hagopian, U.W. 1987, received both the 2001
Wisconsin Association of Assessing Officers (WAAO) and the 2001
International Association of Assessing Officers (IAAO) distinguished
research and development awards. The WAAO award was for his work as the
governor's appointee to the "Benevolent Retirement Home for the Aged"
legislative task force, in researching and writing the government-5
report for that task force. The WAAO, a statewide body of governmental
assessors and taxation officials, recognizes outstanding original
research in property assessment and taxation matters.
The IAAO is an international body of assessors
and lawyers who practice in property taxation and assessment matters.
Hagopian also received the IAAO 2001 Bernard L. Barnard award for
"'Nonprofit' Senior Housing and Property Tax Exemptions." The award
recognizes the best article or essay on technical innovations in
assessment or property tax administration.
Hagopian also spoke at the National Brownfields
2001 Conference in Chicago, put on annually by the U.S. Environ-mental
Protection Agency and the Engineers Society of Western Pennsylvania.
Hagopian's topic, "Secret Weapons for Brownfields Redevelop-ment -
Milwaukee's Approach to Tax-delinquent Brownfields," highlighted new
Wisconsin statute section 75.106 and the development potential it offers
with respect to brownfields.
Pro Bono, Public Service
Habush Habush & Rottier Charitable Foundation,
Milwaukee Brewers Baseball Club, and Southeast Wisconsin Professional
Baseball Park District joined to create a tribute to the 5,000 Miller
Park construction workers and to the three workers who lost their lives.
Two permanent monuments were donated, one titled "Teamwork," a
three-figured 12-foot-high bronze statue created with a gift from the
Habush Habush & Rottier Charitable Foundation. The other, titled
"Worker's Wall," includes bronze plates listing the workers who
contributed to the park's construction.
