    Christopher Ashley, U.W. 1991, has joined the U.W. System as system legal counsel. He formerly was assistant general counsel to the National Science Foundation in Arlington, Va.

    Michael D. Bernstein, U.W. 1985, has joined Arent Fox Kintner Plotkin & Kahn PLLC, Washington, D.C., continuing his representation of manufacturers of food, drugs, medical devices, and dietary supplements. He previously was at Buc & Beardsley, Washington, D.C.

    Donna L. Billmann, Marquette 1998, has joined Adelman & Hynes S.C., Milwaukee, as an associate focusing in corporate, employment, and family law.

    Ronald J. Buchholz, Marquette 1981, has been promoted to colonel in the Judge Advocate General's Corps, U.S. Army. He recently was reassigned to the office of national drug control policy in the executive office of the president, Washington, D.C., to serve as assistant general counsel. Buchholz previously was with the Army Chief of Staff office at the Pentagon.

    Debra E. Kuper, Marquette 1997, and Kenneth L. Haydock, U.W. 1983, have joined CNH Global, N.V., Racine. Kuper formerly was with Godin, Geraghty & Buratti S.C., Kenosha, and taught legal writing at Marquette. Haydock previously was in-house attorney at First Bank System, Minneapolis, and a vice president of the First National Bank of Chicago. Both will work in corporate lending and maritime finance activities.

    Paul W. Connell, Marquette 1998 magna cum laude, has joined Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering, Washington, D.C., as an associate. Connell previously served as law clerk to the Hon. J.P. Stadtmueller, Chief U.S. district judge for the Eastern District of Wisconsin.

    Kerry DwyerKerry E. Dwyer, Boston College 1994, has joined O'Neil, Cannon & Hollman S.C., Milwaukee, as an associate practicing in employment and labor law.

    Diana M. Felsmann, U.W. 2000, has joined the appellate division of the Wisconsin Public Defender's office, Milwaukee, as an assistant state public defender. Felsman previously was with the Legal Assistance to Institutionalized Persons Project and the Claims of Innocence Project at U.W. Law School, the Death Penalty Project through Godfrey, Kahn, LaFollette & Sinykin, and the Defender Project at the Milwaukee Trial Division office of the State Public Defender.

    Lynn M. Galbraith-Wilson, Hamline 1993, has joined Brennan, Steil, Basting & MacDougall S.C., Janesville. She previously was with Bolgrien, Rentz, Mineau, Koepke & Kimes S.C. and Kitto Law Offices S.C., both in Beloit.

    William F. Grady IV, Marquette 2000, has joined Fox, O'Neill & Shannon S.C., Milwaukee, as an associate practicing in business related areas.

    Susan Hedman, U.W. 1987, has joined the legal services branch of the United Nations Compensation Commission (UNCC) in Geneva, Switzerland, as first legal officer and team leader for the environmental claims unit. The UNCC is the UN Security Council body that handles claims arising from Iraq's invasion of Kuwait. Hedman formerly was with the Environmental Law and Policy Center, Chicago, Ill.

    Michael P. Russart, U.W. 1994 cum laude, has become a partner in the Milwaukee office of Hinshaw & Culbertson.

    Paul R. Jacquart, Marquette 2000 cum laude, has joined Jacquart & Lowe S.C., Milwaukee, as an associate focusing on personal injury, medical malpractice, and products liability.

    Peter C. Stomma, Drake 1991, has become a shareholder in Jansson, Shupe, Bridge & Munger Ltd., Racine, where he's been an associate for two years. He has worked in patent and trademark law for nine years.

    Edward R. Antaramian, Marquette 1984, has joined the firm as an associate practicing in trademark prosecution and litigation.

    Agatha K. Kresa, U.W. 2000, has joined the Milwaukee office of Borgelt, Powell, Peterson & Frauen S.C. as an associate practicing in insurance defense litigation.

    Michael L. Laufenberg, Marquette 1995, has joined Laufenberg Law Offices S.C., Milwaukee. He formerly was with Guelzow & Laufenberg Ltd., Eau Claire, and is a member of the board of directors of the Wisconsin Academy of Trial Lawyers. He continues to represent clients injured as a result of medical negligence, product defect, and other negligence.

    Maria MilanoMaria E. Milano, Marquette 1995 cum laude, has joined Metzler and Hager S.C., Green Bay, as an associate in estate planning, probate, and corporate/business law.

    Kelly J. McKnight, U.W. 2000, has joined Wachowski & Johnson S.C., Eau Claire, as an associate concentrating in criminal defense and family law.

    Amy Algiers Anderson, Marquette 2000 cum laude, has joined Meissner Tierney Fisher & Nichols S.C., Milwaukee, practicing in corporate law, tax law, and estate planning.

    Jorge A. Gomez, U.W. 1986, Eric M. McLeod, U.W. 1993, and Cynthia E. Smith, Marquette 1993, have been made partners in Michael Best & Friedrich LLP, Milwaukee. Gomez represents businesses in commercial litigation, including construction, systems integration, health care, and white collar matters. He previously worked in the Milwaukee County District Attorney's office as a felony prosecutor and was assigned to the homicide, sensitive crimes, and drug enforcement units.
    McLeod will continue practicing in business litigation including antitrust and unfair competition, real estate disputes, and contract disputes. He has experience representing clients before the State of Wisconsin Elections Board, state trial courts, and appellate courts.
    Smith focuses her practice on environmental law including compliance auditing, remediations of contaminated sites, and environmental insurance litigation. She also counsels real estate developers and contractors on environmental issues.

    Marsha L. Mortensen, U.W. 2000, has joined Lund & Petkovsek S.C., De Forest, as an associate focusing on estate planning, probate, personal injury, real estate, and family law.

    Michael D. Orgeman, Marquette 1992, has been named partner in Lichtsinn & Haensel S.C., Milwaukee. He will continue in general business and commercial law, real estate, and banking.

    Lisa E. Soronen, U.W. 2000 cum laude, has joined the Wisconsin Court of Appeals, District II, as a law clerk assisting Judge Richard S. Brown in researching and drafting judicial opinions.

    Awards, Degrees, Honors

    Mary A. Brauer, U.W. 1975, was made a charter fellow in the American College of Employee Benefits Counsel (college). Brauer was one of 172 employee benefits attorneys selected from several hundred nominees nationwide. She is a shareholder in the Denver office of Reinhart, Boerner, Van Deuren, Norris & Rieselbach.
    The college evaluates the standards and advances the public's understanding of employee benefits law practice.

    Lt. Col. Paul E. Conrad, U.W. 1981, Judge Advocate General Corps, U.S. Army, recently completed the first phase of the Army War College distance learning course at Carlisle Barracks, Penn., and received the Meritorious Service Medal for outstanding work as a law professor at the Judge Advocate General's School. Conrad also was elected to the board of directors of the national Judge Advocate's Association. He is legal counsel for the Chief, Army Reserve, Washington, D.C.

    Godfrey & Kahn S.C., Milwaukee, Appleton, and Green Bay, was named among the top 20 law firms nationally for mutual fund organization according to The American Lawyer magazine's "Corporate Scorecard."

    E. Michael McCann, Georgetown 1962, Milwaukee County District Attorney, was a member of the U.S. delegation to China for the ABA's Asia Law Initiative Council's symposium in Beijing. The symposium was cosponsored by the Legal Aid Center of the Chinese Ministry of Justice and focused on accessibility of justice by those of limited means.

Steingass, U.W. 1976 magna cum laude, Gregory Van Rybroek, U.W. 1990, and Christopher D. Walther, Marquette 1985. The award, presented this year by President Leonard Loeb, acknowledges people who have made outstanding contributions to the legal profession.

    John E. Donahue, U.W. 1975, and Sherwin C. Peltin, U.W. LL.B 1952, New York LL.M. 1955, and George Washington S.J.D. 1962, of Weiss, Berzowski, Brady & Donahue LLP, Delafield, have earned inclusion in the 2001 edition of Marquis' Who's Who in America. Donahue focuses on employee benefits law, and Peltin practices in tax planning, tax litigation, and business and corporate law.

    Robert L. Habush, U.W. 1961, and Robert W. Lutz, U.W. 1951, were among the first class of attorneys to achieve national certification as trial advocates. Sixty-two attorneys were honored for their commitment to the betterment of the trial bar and their dedication to the cause of attorney certification.

    Mergers, Relocations, New Associations

    Michael J. Fitzgerald, Marquette 1985, formerly with Fitzgerald & Strang S.C., Milwaukee, has joined Stephen M. Glynn, U.W. 1970 cum laude, and Craig W.     Carol S. Josten, Georgetown 1981, joins the firm as an associate. The firm will defend persons and companies involved in criminal investigations and state and federal court proceedings.

    David J. Lisko, Marquette 1980, and Paul M. Erspamer, Marquette 1984, are celebrating their association.     David C. McCormack, Loyola 1987, has formed McCormack Law, located at 2001 S. Prairie Ave., Waukesha. McCormack practices in environmental and employment law, and commercial litigation. He formerly was a partner in Hinshaw & Culbertson and leader of the firm's environmental regulations and compliance practice group.

    Quarles & Brady LLP, Milwaukee and Madison, West Palm Beach and Naples, Fla., and Phoenix, Ariz., merged with Streich Lang PA, Ariz. The merger adds 89 attorneys to Quarles & Brady's Phoenix office, and adds a 10-attorney office in Tucson, strengthening the firm's presence in the southwest and nationwide.

    Pro Bono, Public Service

    Harambee Community School, Milwaukee, has established the "Hugh Braun Reading Fund" in honor of the volunteer efforts of Hugh Braun, Michigan 1956. Braun, an attorney with Godfrey, Braun & Frazier, Milwaukee, has played a major role in the success of the school by helping Harambee purchase its building and property; providing legal representation for the school, parents, and employees; introducing corporate board members to the school; and financially supporting the school.

    Authors, Speakers

    Carlton D. Stansbury, Iowa 1990 with distinction, spoke at the ABA Family Law Section's annual meeting in New York City as part of the "Hot Tips from Experts" program. Stansbury spoke on preparing clients for financial mediation. He is a shareholder in Burbach & Stansbury S.C., Milwaukee.

    J.D. Thorne, DePaul 1973, has authored A Concise Guide to Successful Employment Practices, published by CCH of Chicago, in an expanded and updated third edition. Thorne is with Employment Law Managers, Milwaukee.

    Elections, Appointments

    The State Bar appellate practice section has elected the following officers: chair – Ted E. Wedemeyer Jr.; chair-elect – Howard B. Eisenberg; secretary – Patricia S. Curley; treasurer – Jeffrey O. Davis; past chair – Donald L. Romundson. Marla J. Stephens, Daniel P. Anderson, Beth E. Hanan, Robert R. Henak, and Christopher G. Wren were elected to the board of directors.

    Robert L. Elliott, U.W. 1970, has been appointed a court commissioner by the Hon. Michael D. Guolee, Milwaukee County Circuit Court, Branch 32. Elliott is a sole practitioner, representing individual and corporate plaintiffs in sexual abuse, aggravated commercial disputes, personal injury, employment law, insurance disputes, and admiralty and maritime law.

    Kristine A. Euclide, U.W. 1976, has been elected chair of the State Bar Administrative and Local Government Law Section. Euclide is a partner in Stafford Rosenbaum LLP, Madison, and has been practicing local government law for more than 20 years.

    Janine Geske, Marquette 1975, was elected a fellow of the American College of Civil Trial Mediators. Geske also is a faculty member of the National Judicial College and presented a course on advanced evidence to trial judges from around the country. Geske is with Marquette University Law School.

    Dennis M. Grzezinski, Yale 1975, has been reappointed as commissioner of the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District, and elected chair of its operations committee. He also was recently elected president of the board of the Urban Ecology Center, Milwaukee. He continues to practice environmental law and litigation as a sole practitioner in Milwaukee.

    Kathryn Hasselblad-Pascale has been reappointed to a two-year term on the Wisconsin Supreme Court board of governors.

    Hal Karas, Northeastern 1978, was elected a director of the State Bar real Property, Probate, and Trust Law section. A partner at Michael Best & Friedrich LLP, Milwaukee, Karas practices in land use and development, planned communities, lending transactions, workouts, zoning, and commercial real estate transactions.

    Richard J. Podell, U.W. 1969, became a member of the American Bar Association board of governors. He began a three-year term as Family Law Section representative. Podell is founding member and president of Richard Podell & Associates, Milwaukee.

    Michael C. Meyer, Marquette 1978, and Robert J. Janssen, Marquette 1988, have been appointed to the board of directors of the Wisconsin Academy of Trial Lawyers for a two-year term. Meyer has a law office in Marion; Janssen practices with Stellpflug, Janssen, Nell & Hammer S.C., De Pere.

    Thomas K. Zander, U.W. 1977 cum laude, has been reelected to a second term as chair of the Milwaukee-area Ryan White Consortium.
