    Jeffrey J. Bartzen, U.W. 1991, and Ann E. Curtiss, Marquette 1991, have joined Bell, Gierhart & Moore S.C., Madison, as associates. Bartzen will focus in real estate, business, and estate planning; Curtiss will focus in litigation.

    NeitzkeKelly L. Neitzke , New England School of Law 1999, has joined Congdon, Ward & Walden S.C., Waukesha, practicing in divorce, criminal and juvenile law, real estate, and probate. She previously practiced family law in the Brookfield area.

    Michelle Bellia, U.W. 1995, has joined Davis Wright Tremaine's Portland, Ore., office as an associate practicing in general litigation. Bellia previously was a staff attorney with the U.S. court of appeals for the eleventh circuit in Atlanta, Ga.

    John R. Behling and Christopher R. Bloom, both U.W. 2000, have joined Weld, Riley, Prenn & Ricci S.C., Eau Claire, as associates practicing in labor and employment law.

    P.J. Boylan, Marquette 1982, has been appointed senior legal counsel for technology development, responsible for legal and administrative matters regarding intellectual property and technology development for all U.W. institutions other than the Madison campus. Boylan previously was U.W.-Milwaukee's director of legal affairs.

    Rebecca Grassl Bradley, U.W. 1996, has joined the Milwaukee office of Whyte Hirschboeck Dudek S.C., practicing in civil litigation.

    Joseph M. Cardamone III, U.W. 1998, has joined Gagliardi, Nelson & O'Brien, Salem, as an associate practicing primarily appellate and family law. He previously was an assistant district attorney for Kenosha County.

    Elizabeth M. Connell, U.W. 2000, has joined Crooks, Low, Connell & Rottier S.C., Wausau, as an associate concentrating in tax, corporation, family, and criminal law.

    Leslie A. Even, William Mitchell 1992 cum laude, John Keckhaver, U.W. 1999, and Laura J. Whipple, Marquette 1996 cum laude, have joined Coyne, Niess, Schultz, Becker & Bauer S.C., Madison, as associates. Even previously was house counsel with EBI Companies, Madison, and will focus her practice in worker's compensation defense. Keckhaver previously was employed as staff attorney by the Dane County Circuit Court. Whipple previously was employed at Stafford, Rosenbaum LLP. D'Antico and Forman concentrate on intellectual property law and licensing, D'Antico emphasizing patent prosecution of electrical and computer-related technologies, and Forman emphasizing prosecution of mechanical and electrical technologies. Gustafson practices environmental law, including regulatory compliance, enforcement actions, brownfields redevelopment, environmental risk management, and corporate and real estate transactions. Pienkos focuses on intellectual property law and licensing, with emphasis on patent law and intellectual property. Sawyer practices in corporate finance, securities, and financial institutions law.

    Janice L. Gauthier, Harvard 1986, has been made vice president and general counsel of Concord Development Company, a real estate development company. She previously was senior attorney at The Marcus Corporation.

    Meredith Jagutis, Marquette 1999, has joined Foster, Swift, Collins & Smith P.C. as an associate in the health care practice group of the business and tax department in the firm's Lansing, Mich., office.

    Liza Kessler, U.W. 1997, has joined Leslie Harris & Associates, Washington, D.C., as senior policy counsel.

    Michael D. Rosenberg, Northwestern 1990, has rejoined Foley & Lardner's Milwaukee office as special counsel in the litigation department. He previously was with Kravit, Gass, Hovel & Leitner S.C., focusing on products liability, toxic torts, personal injury, and insurance coverage litigation.

    Gene Schaeffer Jr., U.W. 1992 with honors, has joined the insurance practice group of LaFollette Godfrey & Kahn's Madison office. He previously was a legislative aide and chief of staff for State Senator Peggy Rosenzweig (R-Wauwatosa).

    Stephanice A. Schantz, U.W. 1996, has joined Manwell & Milton, San Francisco, as an associate. She practices corporate, business, and securities law.

    Daniel J. Schlichting, U.W. 1991, has been elected shareholder in Hurley, Burish & Milliken S.C., Madison, continuing in estate planning, business, real estate, and family law.

    Amy M. Schoepke, U.W. 1998, has joined the Milwaukee office of Whyte Hirschboeck Dudek S.C., concentrating in finance law with an emphasis on consumer finance.

    Stephen J. Shenkenberg, U.W. 1987, has joined Munder Capital Management, Birmingham, Mich., as general counsel. He previously was deputy general counsel for Strong Capital Management.

    Timothy L. Vocke, U.W. 1973, was presiding judge in the 17th annual High School Mock Trial Championships in Columbia, S.C. Vocke is with Eckert, Kost & Vocke, Rhinelander.

    Retirements

    EichJudge William Eich, U.W. 1963, retires from the court Oct. 1 after 35 years of service, 26 as a judge. Eich served as chief justice of the Wisconsin Court of Appeals from 1989-98, longer than any other chief judge.

    Judge Edwin Dahlberg, U.W. 1949, has retired from the bench after 41 years of service in Rock County.

    Awards, Degrees, Honors

    Judge Thomas H. Barland, U.W. 1956, received the award of judicial excellence presented by the ABA judicial division National Conference of State Trial Judges. He was recognized for his "outstanding performance and achievement, exemplary conduct, excellence of character, and extraordinary service to the bench, bar, and community."

    Scott Hassett, Rutgers 1980, a shareholder at Lawton & Cates S.C., Madison, has been named chair of the board of directors of the Natural Resources Foundation of Wisconsin.

    James W. McNeilly Jr., U.W. 1981, has become a member of the Commercial Law League of America, an organization of bankruptcy and commercial law professionals.

Gwen Moore; Individual Award for Outstanding Pro Bono Service - Jane Anderson, Minnesota 1982, Anderson Law Office; Outstanding Lay Volunteer - Patricia Koppenhoefer, Cooperating Churches of Greater Waukesha; and Bar Association Leadership Award - Milwaukee Young Lawyers Association.

    Mergers, Relocations, New Associations

    John J. Hogan, Marquette 1977, and Timothy B. Melms, Marquette 1993, have joined as partners establishing Hogan & Melms LLP, Rhinelander. Continuing as an associate is Jennifer A. Stuber, Valparaiso 1998. Susan Rosenberg, Marquette 1983, joins the firm as of counsel, continuing to emphasize personal injury and civil litigation consulting. The firm serves general practice areas, including personal injury, insurance defense, family, real estate, estate planning, and criminal law.

    Paul R. Gurtler, Hamline 1989, has formed ProRisk Underwriters Inc., N71 W27166 Hansen Dr., Sussex. Gurtler will continue practicing in liability insurance policies for attorneys. The organization will concentrate in municipal insurance consulting, directors and officers liability, employment practices liability, union liability and errors and omissions insurance.

    The Association of State Prosecutors has elected the following officers: president - John R. Burr, Madison; vice president - Catharine D. White, Shawano; secretary - Audrey Skwierawski, Milwaukee; and treasurer - Gale G. Shelton, Whitefish Bay.

    The Dane County Bar Association has elected these officers: president - James L. Fullin, Madison; president-elect - Kevin J. Palmersheim, Middleton; secretary - Leslie B. Griffith, Madison; and treasurer - Valerie Bailey Rihn, Madison.

    The Door-Kewaunee County Bar Association has elected the following officers: president - Richard S. Hoyerman, Sturgeon Bay; president-elect - Jacob M. Blazkovec, Algoma; and secretary/treasurer - Jeffrey K. Fields, Sturgeon Bay.

    FriedmanJames D. Friedman, Notre Dame 1972, has been appointed to the newly created Wisconsin Department of Financial Institution's Task Force on Financial Competitiveness 2005. The task force will analyze the needs of Wisconsin's financial instutions and make recommendations on policy initiatives to enhance the state's regulatory and economic environment. Friedman is a partner with Quarles & Brady LLP, Milwaukee, and practices in financial institutions law.

    Carl W. Gilmore, U.W. 1994, has been elected president of the McHenry County Bar Association, McHenry County, Ill. Gilmore practices family law with Mohr, Mangiamele, Bruce & Gilmore, McHenry, Ill.

    Kimberly A. Hurtado, Marquette 1988, has been appointed to the board of governors of the American Bar Association forum on the construction industry. Hurtado previously served as chair of the contract negotiations and administration division and is coauthor and editor of Partnering in Construction: A Practical Guide to Project Success, a book published by the forum.

    The Iowa County Bar Association has elected these officers: president - Timothy L. Angel; president-elect - Ted N. Frank; and secretary/treasurer - Erik C. Peterson, all of Dodgeville.

    Marla J. Stephens, Marquette 1981, has been elected chair of the State of Wisconsin Judicial Council. Stephens is director of the appellate division for the Wisconsin Public Defender Office. She previously was first assistant of the Milwaukee appellate office and assistant state public defender in the Milwaukee trial office (then the Milwaukee appellate office). Ruth A. Bachman, U.W. 1978, has been elected vice chair of the Judicial Council. She is an assistant DA in Barron County, and previously was district attorney in Eau Claire county, assistant DA in Eau Claire and Ashland counties, and assistant attorney general.

    The Lafayette County Bar Association has elected the following officers: president - Scott A. Berndtson, Galena, Ill.; secretary - Lance A. McNaughton, Shullsburg; and treasurer - Eldon R. Hird, Blanchardville.

    Judge Thomas S. Utschig, William Mitchell 1977, has been reappointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. Utschig is the bankruptcy judge for the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Wisconsin and his office is in Eau Claire.
