    Rodney W. Dequaine, Hamline 1991, has been named director/assistant corporation counsel for the Door County Child Support Agency. He was previously a staff attorney for the Brown County Child Support Agency.

    Mary E. Eberle, Marquette 1999, has joined DeWitt Ross & Stevens S.C., Madison, as an associate attorney. She is a registered patent attorney and will practice in intellectual property, trademark, and copyright law.

    Scott K. Petersen, Pepperdine 1993, also has joined the firm as an associate attorney. He will practice in litigation, civil, criminal, and administrative matters, and municipal representation.

    Richard T. Elrod, Marquette 1994, has been elected shareholder in Herrling, Clark, Hartzheim & Siddall Ltd. He practices in personal injury, litigation, worker's compensation, family law, and labor law.

    Christopher C. Cain, William Mitchell 1996, and Andrew L. Nelson, U.W. 1993 cum laude, have joined the Madison office of Foley & Lardner as associates. Cain, a CPA, joins the firm's business law department, focusing on e-commerce, licensing, contract negotiation and drafting, mergers and acquisitions, and general business counseling. Nelson, also a CPA, joins the tax and individual planning department, practicing in taxation, estate planning, and general business counseling. Megan J. Ballard, U.W. 1994 cum laude, LL.M. U.W. 1999, has joined the firm as special counsel in the estates and trusts practice group. Previously, Ballard was with Perkins Coie, Seattle. Sandy M.     HansenKenneth J. Hansen, Harvard 1987, has been promoted to partner in the Madison office of Quarles & Brady LLP. Hansen practices in general corporate and securities law and mergers and acquisitions, with an emphasis on software and other high technology companies. Previously, he served as general counsel for a software development company.

    Jason R. Handal, Marquette 1995, has joined Willms Anderson S.C., Thiensville, continuing in estate and business succession planning and corporate law. Previously Handal was with Cook & Franke S.C., Milwaukee.

    Richard L. Hillman, Marquette 1987, has joined Foster, Swift, Collins & Smith, Lansing and Farmington Hills, Mich., in the government and commerce department. Previously, Hillman was a shareholder with McGinty, Jakubiak, Frankland & Hitch P.C., East Lansing, Mich. Hillman is admitted to practice in Michigan and Wisconsin.

    Brian K. Holmgren, Vanderbilt 1985, has joined the Nashville, Tenn., district attorney's office as an assistant district attorney in the criminal trial division. Previously, Holmgren was with the American Prosecutor's Research Institute's National Center for Prosecution of Child Abuse, where he trained clients on child abuse issues, and assistant district attorney in Kenosha.

    Jean J. Brown, Marquette 1989 cum laude, has joined Jastroch & LaBarge S.C., Waukesha, continuing in plaintiff's personal injury litigation. She formerly was associated with Hausmann-McNally S.C., Milwaukee. Jeffrey T. Clutts, Marquette 1988, also has joined the firm as an associate in the personal injury and worker's compensation department. Previously, Clutts was associated with Daniel P. Kondos S.C., Milwaukee.

    Angela Jaenke, U.W. 1998, and Aaron C. Tharpe, Marquette 1999, have joined the National Labor Relations Board, Region 30-Milwaukee, as field attorneys.

    LesavichStephen Lesavich, U.W. 1995, has been elected partner in McDonnell Boehnen Hulbert & Berghoff, Chicago. Lesavich has a Ph.D. in computer science and is a member of the Illinois, Oregon, and Wisconsin bars. He is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Lesavich practices in intellectual property issues related to computer software and the Internet, including patents, trademarks, and copyrights.

    James D. Peterson, U.W. 1998, has joined LaFollette Sinykin LLP, Madison, as an associate focusing on intellectual property and litigation. Previously, Peterson served on the University of Notre Dame faculty.

    Rochelle H. Klaskin, Chicago-Kent 1998, has joined the firm as an associate practicing in corporate, securities, and employment law. Previously Klaskin worked in private practice in Chicago.

    Alexandra B. Klass, U.W. 1992, has become a partner in Dorsey & Whitney LLP, Minneapolis, Minn. Klass practices in environmental litigation and compliance.

(Meunier) Lloyd, Marquette 1992, has been appointed managing editor of Quinlan Publishing Inc., Boston, Mass., a nationwide publisher of legal resource books, monthly legal bulletins, and electronic publications. She previously was with Kotin, Crabtree & Strong LLP, Boston, and Shneidman & Myers, Milwaukee.

    MayerMatthew S. Mayer, Marquette 1990, has joined Grischke & Bremer LLSC, Wausau, as an associate. He will serve as a trial lawyer focusing on personal injury including products liability and medical negligence. Mayer previously was affiliated with a firm in West Bend.

    Kim I. Moermond, Harvard 1993, has joined Reuter & Whitish S.C., Madison, as an associate concentrating in municipal, family, and business law.

    Lawrence Phillips, Drake 1960, has become head tax administrator for the territory of Kosovo. Phillips previously was director of the Internal Revenue Service of Wisconsin.

    Matthew J. Richburg, Thomas M. Cooley 1996, has joined Kohn Law Firm S.C., Milwaukee, concentrating in debt collection and litigation including retail, commercial, municipal, and landlord/tenant matters. Previously, he was corporate counsel for Madison Property Management Inc.

    Gilbert L. Southwell III, U.W. 1981, has joined the Milwaukee office of Michael Best & Friedrich LLP as a partner. Southwell has more than 15 years experience in commercial law with an emphasis on secured lending. Previously, he was assistant general counsel for Firstar Corporation.

    Eric Skonnord, Marquette 1996, has joined Rider, Bennet, Egan & Arundel LLP in the trusts and estates department. He focuses in estate planning, estate, gift and income taxation, probate and trust administration, and guardianship/conservatorship law.

    JacobsenJennifer M. Jacobsen, U.W. 1992, has been made a shareholder in Weintraub Genshlea & Sproul, Sacramento, Calif., practicing in real estate law with an emphasis on community associations and common interest developments. Jacobsen joined the firm in 1995 after serving as a fellow and staff attorney with Pacific Legal Foundation, a national nonprofit public interest law firm in Sacramento.

    Gay Ann Spahn, U.W. 1988, has joined Wilhelm Law Service S.C., Appleton, as an associate. Previously, Spahn worked as a patent attorney for Armstrong, Westerman, Hattori, McLeland & Naughton, Washington, D.C., and PPG Industries, Pittsburgh, Penn; and as a patent examiner for the U.S. Department of Commerce. Spahn practices in intellectual property law.

    Joseph E. Tierney IV, U.W. 1995, has joined the Milwaukee office of Michael Best & Friedrich LLP, practicing in real estate law and tax planning matters.

    David L. Weigman, Western New England College 1993, was recently named associate general counsel of Carlson Real Estate Company, a commercial real estate development and management company based in Minneapolis, Minn.

    Stephen C. Werner Jr., U.W. 1997 cum laude, has joined the Milwaukee office of Whyte Hirschboeck Dudek S.C. as an associate, concentrating in intellectual property with a focus on trademark and copyright law. He also is experienced in computer software, licensing, unfair competition, and cyberspace matters.

    Appointments, Elections

    Carrie Raymond Bedore, Minnesota 1985, has been appointed volunteer, part-time executive director of the Mequon-Thiensville Education Foundation Inc. The foundation was established in 1998 to provide funding for additional educational opportunities and programs for area students. Bedore is a shareholder in Reinhart, Boerner, Van Deuren, Norris & Rieselbach S.C.

    Michael B. Brennan, Northwestern 1989, has been appointed to the Milwaukee County Circuit Court by Gov. Tommy Thompson. Brennan replaces Judge Ronald Brooks.

    Robert O. Burr, Marquette 1996, has been elected chair of the Criminal Law Committee of the Charlotte County, Fla., Bar Association.

    Frederick W. Fischer, U.W. 1963, Eau Claire city attorney, has been reappointed a regional vice president of the Seventh Circuit, for the International Municipal Lawyers Association, Washington, D.C.

    Eunice Gibson, U.W. 1973, Madison city attorney, has been reappointed as state chair and also serves as chair of IMLA's personnel section.

    Warren P. Kraft, Oshkosh city attorney, has been appointed vice-chair for the association's land development, planning, and zoning section.

    Robert W. Kohn, U.W. 1959, senior partner in the Kohn Law Firm S.C., Milwaukee, was reelected to a two-year term as a vice president on the board of directors for the National Association of Retail Collection Attorneys. Kohn practices in commercial, retail, medical, and municipal debt collection and litigation.

    PasternakFrank T. Pasternak, John Marshall 1994, has been appointed chair of the Wisconsin Academy of Trial Lawyers (WATL) New Lawyers Section. As section chair, he will serve on WATL's board of directors and legislative committee. Pasternak is a sustaining member of WATL and a plaintiff's personal injury lawyer with Murphy, Gillick, Wicht & Prachthauser S.C., Milwaukee.

    Dennis R. McBride, New York University 1980, has been elected to the board of directors of the Wauwatosa Historical Society. He also was reappointed as a member of the Wauwatosa Civil Service Commission, of which he is a past chair. McBride is a senior trial attorney in the Milwaukee district office of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

    Robert A. Mich Jr., U.W. 1996, has been appointed legal counsel for the Wisconsin Jaycees. Mich remains an associate with Kay & Andersen S.C., practicing in general civil litigation.

    Randy S. Nelson, Marquette 1977, a partner with the Milwaukee office of Weiss, Berzowski, Brady & Donahue LLP, was reappointed to the business planning committee of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel for 2000. Nelson practices in estate planning, family business planning, tax planning, trust administration, and probate.

    The Wisconsin Academy of Trial Lawyers recently elected the following officers: president - Kevin Lonergan, Appleton; president-elect - M. Angela Dentice, Brookfield; vice president - Keith R. Clifford, Madison; secretary - Susan Rosenberg, Milwaukee; treasurer - Bruce R. Bachhuber, Green Bay.

    Linda Nowakowski Winter, Marquette 1982, has been appointed to chair the attorneys' committee for the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans, Brookfield. Winter also is serving a three-year term as regional director of the Marquette University Alumni Association National Board of Directors. She practices in employee benefits with Yonke, Arnold, Newbold, Winter & Jacoby P.C., Kansas City, Mo.

    Authors, Speakers

    Chief Justice Shirley S. Abrahamson, Indiana University-Bloomington 1956, delivered the 1999 John C. Paulus Lecture on Nov. 22, 1999, at Willamette University College of Law in Salem, Ore. The lecture, entitled "Courtroom with a View: Building Judicial Independence with Public Participation," will be published next year.
    PodellRichard Podell, U.W. 1969, spoke at the Belfast Conference for Family Lawyers of Northern Ireland, Ireland, and England. The conference was held at Royal Courts of Justice and was on family law issues in the U.S. over the last year with an emphasis on human rights. Topics included the Hague Convention accord on international child abduction, third-party custody, and termination of parental rights. He was the only speaker from outside the U.K.
    Liza Kessler, U.W. 1997, recently traveled to Berlin, Germany, to speak to the leadership of the German Christian Democratic Party on the problems with governmental censorship of content on the Internet and less restrictive alternatives to help Internet users avoid unwanted or offensive Internet content. Kessler also recently was on the nationally syndicated public radio program, "Public Interest with Kojo Nnambi," where she discussed the First Amendment concerns raised by attempts to legislate restrictions on unsolicited commercial email.

    Timothy Harper, U.W. 1977, a journalist and author based in Ridgewood, N.J., is the author of License to Steal: The Secret World of Wall Street Brokers and the Systematic Plundering of the American Investor. An Amazon.com business bestseller, it is his ninth book.

    Awards, Degrees, Honors

    Richard G. Baumann, U.W. 1964, of the Los Angeles firm Sulmeyer, Kupetz, Baumann & Rothman P.C., has successfully completed the requirements for recertification by the American Board of Certification in creditors' rights law. He initially was certified in 1993.

    GainesIrving D. Gaines, U.W. 1947, the senior member of Gaines Law Offices S.C., Milwaukee, is included in the millennium edition of Who's Who in America. He has been listed in Who's Who in American Law from its inception, including the millennium edition, and in Who's Who in the World. He practices in general civil and business litigation, and complex real estate transactions.

    Dale J. Evensen, William Mitchell 1990, has been named a rising star in the legal profession by Minnesota Law & Politics magazine. Evensen, an officer of Cousineau, McGuire & Anderson, Ironwood, Mich., joined the Minneapolis-based firm in 1992. Recently admitted to practice in Wisconsin and Michigan, Evensen has begun handling cases in both states.

    Margaret W. Hickey, U.W. 1986 cum laude, has been accepted as a Fellow to the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and the Wisconsin Chapter of AAML. Hickey is with Becker & Hickey S.C., Milwaukee, and practices in all areas of family and elder law.

    Kenneth E. Voss, Marquette 1960, has become of counsel to Hurtado S.C., Brookfield, where he will continue his practice in construction, general corporate, and probate law.

    Clare Bader, U.W. 1997, was named 1999 Woman of the Year by the Manitowoc/Two Rivers Business and Professional Women's Club. Bader is an associate at Radosevich, Mozinski, and Cashman, practicing in family law, bankruptcy, and personal injury.

    Marc T. McCrory, U.W. 1986, a shareholder with Brennan, Steil, Basting & MacDougall S.C., Janesville, has become certified by the National Board of Trial Advocacy as a civil trial advocate. McCrory practices in trial law in federal and state courts.

    ChaetBarry L. Chaet, DePaul 1974, of Beck, Chaet, Molony & Bamberger S.C., Milwaukee, was chosen as the Wisconsin Innkeepers Association's 1999 Associate of the Year. The annual award recognizes a commitment to excellence in serving the lodging industry.

    Philip Lehner, U.W. 1973, an attorney with Capwell, Nolden, Kallenbach & Grahovac S.C., Racine, recently was honored by the Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce for completing six years as chair of WMC's Worker's Compensation Counsel. Lehner represents insurers and employers in all aspects of managing, investigating, and defending worker's compensation claims.

    Judge Daniel L. Konkol, Marquette 1976, was named 1999 Man of the Year by the South Side Business Club of Milwaukee. Judge Konkol currently is assigned to a homicide and sexual assault court in the felony division of the Milwaukee County Circuit Court.

    Maury D. Beaulier, a partner in the Beaulier Law Office, Bloomington, Minn., was accepted as a life member in the National Registry of Who's Who based on his service record to the community and the profession of law. Beaulier practices in business law and criminal defense in Minnesota and western Wisconsin.

    Alyson K. Zierdt, Marquette 1981, a shareholder in Reff Baivier Bermingham Zierdt & Lim S.C., Oshkosh, recently was honored by the Oshkosh Chamber of Commerce as its first recipient of the Athena award. The award is given to a woman who has demonstrated outstanding commitment to her profession, the advancement of other woman, and her community.

    Mergers, Relocations, New Associations

    Philip Ankel, U.W. 1994, of Altheimer & Gray, Chicago, has moved from the firm's Kiev, Ukraine, office to its Bucharest, Romania, office. He will continue practicing in international banking law and international mergers and acquisitions.

    Michael Blumenfield, Drake 1984, and Georgetown 1996 LLM, taxation, and Susan E. Hanson, Drake 1980, formerly of Blumenfeld, Rose & deJong S.C., have formed Blumenfeld and Hanson S.C., Wauwatosa. The firm will focus its practice in estate planning, succession planning, and general business law.

    Barbara L. Burbach, U.W. 1975, and Carlton D. Stansbury, Iowa 1990 with distinction, have moved their office of Burbach & Stansbury S.C. to 10850 W. Park Place, Suite 530, Milwaukee. They will continue to emphasize family law, paternity, appellate practice, mediation, and arbitration.

    Stephen M. Compton, Marquette 1992, has opened his own law firm at 517 E. Walworth Ave., Delavan. He will continue to concentrate in litigation and appellate practice.

    Dalebroux Law Office S.C. has moved from Casco, Wis., to 151 Commerce Dr., Luxemburg, Wis. Gary Dalebroux, U.W. 1975, practices in estate planning, farm and business organizations, tax planning and preparation, real estate, probate, guardianships, and elder law.

    To better serve its customers, Firstar Bank Wisconsin and Firstar Bank Milwaukee N.A. has changed its name to First Bank N.A. These banks have merged as one to better serve Wisconsin's financial needs.

    Denis J. Regan, Marquette 1982, Kathryn A. Keppel, Marquette 1986, Patrick J. Knight, Marquette 1975, and Raymond M. Dall'Osto, Marquette 1977, have been named partners in Gimbel, Reilly, Guerin & Brown, Milwaukee. The firm has moved to Two Plaza East, Suite 1170, 330 E. Kilbourn Ave., Milwaukee.

    Pamela Lunder, U.W. 1980, of Lunder Law Office has merged with Julian, Musial & Friedrich S.C. to create Julian, Musial, Friederich & Lunder S.C. with offices in Madison and Mt. Horeb. The firm concentrates in family law, estate planning, real estate transactions, and criminal and traffic defense.

    LaFollette Sinykin LLP, Madison, has joined practices with Godfrey & Kahn S.C. effective Jan. 1, 2000. The combined firm will offer a wider range of legal services, including stronger litigation and appellate practices and greater access to courts statewide. Godfrey & Kahn's practice areas include general business law, corporate finance, patent law, tax law, mergers and acquisitions, estate planning, real estate, banking and labor, and others. Godfrey & Kahn has offices in Milwaukee, Green Bay, Appleton, and Oshkosh. Godfrey & Kahn's Madison office will be known as LaFollette, Godfrey & Kahn, and located in the present LaFollette Sinykin offices at One East Main Street.

    Scott E. Mickelson, U.W. 1995, has opened a practice at 5610 Medical Circle, Suite 32, Maison. He will continue his work in general practice for traffic and criminal defense and civil litigation, as well as real estate transactions, small business, and estate planning matters. He previously was with Giesen Law Offices, Madison.

    Nola J. Hitchcock Cross, U.W. 1975, formerly with Podell, Ugent & Cross, and Kenneth J. Murray, Loyola 1956, formerly with Adelman, Adelman & Murray, have formed the labor, employment, and business litigation law firm of Murray & Cross. The new firm is at Lawyers' Building, 845 N. 11th St., Milwaukee.

    Stephanie C. Stoltman, U.W. 1983, and Micabil Diaz-Martinez, Marquette 1989, have formed the Law Offices of Stephanie C. Stoltman LLC, located at the Columbus Office Building, 414 E. Walnut St., Suite 201, Green Bay. The firm practices in criminal defense, family law, and juvenile law. Diaz-Martinez previously was with Legal Services of Northeastern Wisconsin, and is fluent in Spanish.

    Weiss, Berzowksi, Brady & Donahue, Milwaukee, will open a branch office with five attorneys in Delafield later this year. Dean Richards, Marquette 1982, and Susan Marguet, Indiana University-Bloomington 1980, have joined the firm and will work at the new branch.

    Retirements, Resignations

    James E. Garvey, Minnesota 1954, has retired from his law firm of 46 years, Garvey, Anderson, Johnson, Geraci, & Mirr S.C., Eau Claire. He was an active civil trial lawyer and active in Bar activities.

    David Marks, U.W. 1982, has stepped down as president of the Stella Link Redevelopment Association after a decade of work on the group's unique urban renewal project, Stella Link Campus Park, in southwest Houston. Marks will remain on the association's advisory board.
