    Kimberly A. Shaul, U.W. 1989, and David C. Holman, Hamline 1985, have been named assistant generals counsel in the corporate legal division of American Family Insurance, Madison.

    William F. Bock, U.W. 1972, has been named chief counsel of the Phoenix, Ariz., city attorney's office, supervising operations and legal staff for the civil division. He formerly was the deputy city attorney for Racine, and corporation counsel of Racine and Walworth counties.

    Juliet Brodie, Harvard 1991 magna cum laude, has joined the clinical faculty of the Frank J. Remington Jr. Center at the U.W. Law School in its Neighborhood Law Project. The project provides community lawyering services and representation to residents of south Madison neighborhoods.

    Paul J. Callan, Marquette 1982, has joined Community Bank & Trust as senior vice president of the trust department. He will oversee all aspects of trust services with an emphasis on personal trusts, estate planning, and employee benefit plans. Callan previously was employed by Firstar Bank and Gray & End, Milwaukee.

    Phillip J. Dahlberg, Marquette 2000, has joined McLario, Helm & Bertling S.C., Menomonee Falls, as an associate focusing in business, contracts, family law, real estate, and general civil and criminal litigation.

    Duffy Dillon, U.W. 2000, has joined Nowlan & Mouat LLP, Janesville, as an associate practicing in family law, insurance defense, personal injury, and civil litigation.

    Leslie A. Even, William Mitchell 1992, has been appointed assistant general counsel at American Family Insurance, Madison.

    Matthew I. Fraidin, U.W. 1993, has joined The Children's Law Center, Washington, D.C., as legal director. CLC provides free legal services to children, low-income families, and foster and kinship caregivers, and provides training and technical assistance in special education, foster care, adoption, custody, government benefits, delinquency, and mental health. Fraidin previously served as supervising attorney at the Legal Aid Society of D.C. and associate counsel to Vice President Albert Gore.

    Jason S. Gerlach, U.W. 1996, has joined Howard, Rice, Nemerovski, Canady, Falk & Rabkin, San Francisco, as a litigation associate. Gerlach previously was with Hale and Dorr LLP, Boston, in civil litigation.

    Michael T. Hopkins, Marquette 1981, has joined Domnitz, Mawicke & Goisman S.C., Milwaukee, concentrating in intellectual property litigation. He has an LL.M. in intellectual property.

    Joseph S. Goode, Syracuse 1994 cum laude, and Karen L. Tidwall, Creighton 1993 cum laude, have been elected shareholders in Kravit, Gass, Hovel & Leitner S.C., Milwaukee, a boutique litigation firm.

    Melissa L. Greipp, Marquette 1999 cum laude, former judicial clerk for Justice N. Patrick Crooks, has joined the firm as an associate. She practices in general civil litigation, with an emphasis in commercial disputes.

    Timothy E. Kronquist, DePaul 1995, has joined the Milwaukee office of Davis & Kuelthau S.C. as an associate and member of the business and corporate law section. His practice focuses on commercial real estate transactions, financing and developments, structuring §1031 tax deferred exchanges, zoning and subdivision matters, general business law, and federal election and campaign issues. He is an advisor to and legal counsel for Congressman Paul Ryan and the Ryan for Congress Committee.

    Donald E. (Del) Laverdure, U.W. 1999, has joined von Briesen, Purtell & Roper S.C., Milwaukee, as an associate in the Indian law and business practice groups.

    Erika L. Leuffen, Drake 1996, and Timothy B. Anderson, Marquette 2000, have joined Herrling, Clark, Hartzheim & Siddall Ltd., Appleton, as associates.     Mark A. Miller, Marquette 1983, a shareholder in Whyte Hirschboeck Dudek S.C., Manitowoc, has been elected a managing director of the firm and a member of the management committee. Miller practices in corporate and health care law, government relations, and trust and estate planning.

    Thomas R. Revnew, Marquette 1994, has joined the Minneapolis office of Littler Mendelson P.C., as an associate. The firm exclusively represents management on labor and employment issues.

    Scott P. Richardson, Marquette 1994, LL.M. New York University 1995, has joined Richardson Financial Group Inc., Menomonee Falls, where he provides comprehensive wealth planning services to individuals and families. He previously was a manager in the Great Lakes regional estate planning practice at Deloitte & Touche LLP.

    Miguel A. Ruiz, U.W. 1992, has joined Pretzel & Stouffer, Chartered. He will continue his practice in medical negligence defense.

    Stephanie A. Schantz, U.W. 1996, has joined Manwell & Milton, San Francisco, as an associate. She practices corporate, business, and securities law.

    Ben J. Schulenburg, U.W. 2000, has joined the Legal Services Program of the AIDS Resource Center of Wisconsin (ARCW), Milwaukee, practicing in estate planning, landlord/tenant, disability, bankruptcy, and discrimination matters. ARCW provides free legal representation to persons living with HIV or AIDS throughout Wisconsin.

    Paul "Jay" Sturm, John Marshall 1979, has joined Omholt & Forsythe S.C., Manawa, as an associate. He previously was with Sturm & Sons, Manawa, as in-house counsel.

    Steven S. Stein, Marquette 1995, has been named regional sales manager for JURITAS.com, an Internet start-up company based in Chicago, Ill. JURITAS.com enables law firms to search and retrieve actual trial court documents filed throughout the U.S. Stein previously was a trial lawyer with the Law Offices of Robert A. Levine.

Hupfer previously was with Marie Stanton Law Offices, Green Bay, and practices in insurance defense, business litigation, and personal injury. Miller is an adjunct faculty member at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College, and practices in divorce, child placement, litigation, and collections. Anderson has an LL.M. Taxation from New York University and focuses on business law, individual planning and tax services, and real estate law. Lin is a CPA and concentrates in individual planning and business law. Lin previously was a tax consultant with Deloitte & Touche LLP.

     

    James A. Wendland, Marquette 1974, has joined Murray & Cross, Milwaukee, as an associate practicing in employment, labor, and business dispute resolution and litigation. Wendland formerly was a circuit court judge in Dunn County.

    Theresa M. Hottenroth, U.W. 1995 cum laude, and Michael W. Taibleson, Chicago-Kent 1990 with honors, have been promoted to shareholders in Whyte Hirschboeck Dudek S.C. Hottenroth practices in health care, government relations, litigation, and white collar compliance and defense in the Madison office. Taibleson practices in employee benefits, taxation, and corporate law in the Milwaukee office.

    George R. Wood, William Mitchell 1985, has joined Littler Mendelson P.C., Minneapolis, as a shareholder, concentrating in employment law, ERISA litigation, and shareholder disputes. He formerly was with Gray, Plant, Mooty, Mooty & Bennett, Minneapolis.

    Michael J. Devanie, Vermont 1979, and Keith A. Belzer, Loyola 1992, have formed Devanie & Belzer S.C., 300 N. Second, #310, La Crosse. The firm concentrates in criminal law, civil rights litigation, personal injury, and trial consultation.

    Lisle W. Blackbourn, Marquette 1982, and Kim A. Howarth, U.W. 1980, shareholders in Godfrey, Neshek, Worth, Leibsle & Conover S.C., Elkhorn, have been added to the firm's name. The firm is now Godfrey, Leibsle, Conover, Blackbourn & Howarth S.C.

    Elections, Appointments

    James C. Alexander, U.W. 1974, has been named president and chair of the board of directors of the Association of Judicial Disciplinary Counsel (AJDC). Alexander is executive director of the Wisconsin Judicial Commission. The AJDC is a national organization of lawyers and investigators engaged in the work of judicial discipline and judicial ethics.

    Nathaniel Cade Jr., Michigan 1996, an associate at Michael Best & Friedrich LLP, Milwaukee, was appointed to the State Bar's standing committee on professional ethics by President Gary Bakke. Cade practices in products liability, construction law, insurance defense, and business litigation.

    The Calumet County Bar Association has elected the following officers: president - Kim M. Rietbrock; president-elect - Kenneth R. Kratz; and secretary/treasurer - Michelle L. Birschbach; all of Chilton.

    The Eau Claire County Bar Association has elected the following officers: president - Michael A. Schumacher; president-elect - Ann W. Johnson; secretary - John D. Leary; and treasurer - Jeffrey W. Hart; all of Eau Claire.

    Eunice Gibson, U.W. 1973, Madison city attorney, has been elected regional vice president for the 7th Circuit of the International Municipal Lawyers Association. She replaces Frederick W. (Ted) Fischer, U.W. 1963, the Eau Claire city attorney, who has served as chair of IMLA's Personnel Section. Warren P. Kraft, Marquette 1982, Oshkosh city attorney, was appointed to replace Ms. Gibson as state chair. Kraft serves as vice chair of IMLA's Land Development, Planning and Zoning Section and is responsible for the section's bimonthly newsletter.

    The Hon. Ted. E. Wedemeyer Jr., LL.M. 1961, and Frank T. Pasternak, J.D. cum laude 1994, have been appointed co-presidents of The John Marshall Law School Alumni Association's Wisconsin chapter. Pasternak also joins Judge Wedemeyer on the association's board of directors. The Wisconsin chapter serves to increase communication and interaction between the law school and its alumni. Judge Wedemeyer is presiding judge with the Court of Appeals-District I, and Pasternak is a litigator with Murphy, Gillick, Wicht & Prachthauser S.C., Milwaukee.

    The Jefferson County Bar Association has elected these officers: president -Vincent J. Gurrero, Lake Mills; president-elect - Colleen J. Locke, Jefferson; and secretary/treasurer - Jacob W. Gobel, Jefferson.

    The Juneau County Bar Association has elected these officers: president - Rebecca M. Richards-Bria, Mauston; and secretary/treasurer - Thomas J. McNally, Necedah.

    The La Crosse County Bar Association has elected the following officers: president - Bryant H. Klos; president-elect - Roger W. LeGrand; and secretary/treasurer - Jeffrey R. Pawelski; all of La Crosse.

    David Leeper, U.W. 1975, a Madison attorney in private practice, has been chosen for a one-year Central and Eastern European Law Initiative (CEELI) placement in Kiev, Ukraine. CEELI is a project of the ABA. Leeper will serve as a rule of law liaison, sharing his Wisconsin legal experience with legal professionals in Ukraine. The program's purpose is to strengthen democratic institutions and increase international understanding.

    Paul R. Puerner, Harvard 1955, has been appointed to a three-member arbitration panel for Advanced Cardiovascular Systems Inc. v. Medtronic Ave. Inc. The arbitration involves contract and related issues regarding "Angioplasty Apparatus Facilitating Rapid Changes." Puerner is with the Law Offices of Paul R. Puerner, Brookfield. He formerly was with Michael, Best & Friedrich, Milwaukee.

    John P. Savage, Marquette 1967, was elected chair and Randall L. Nash, U.W. 1979, was elected vice chair of the Wisconsin State Elections Board, the arm of the State of Wisconsin that monitors candidate compliance, political candidates, and donor compliance with state election laws and regulations.

    Brian Pierson, U.W. 1983, a shareholder in von Briesen, Purtell & Roper S.C., Milwaukee, has been elected chair of the State Bar's Indian Law Section. Donald E. (Del) Laverdure, U.W. 1999, an associate in the firm, has been elected secretary-treasurer of the Indian Law Section.

    The Winnebago County Bar Association has elected these officers: president - Daniel J. Bissett, Oshkosh; president-elect - Gregory A. Petit, Neenah; and secretary/treasurer - Brenda Bann, Appleton.

    Awards, Degrees, Honors

    Robert L. Habush, U.W. 1961, has been honored by the Wisconsin Academy of Trial Lawyers (WATL) by naming a new annual award recognizing the trial lawyer of the year after him. Habush is with Habush, Habush, Davis & Rottier, Milwaukee. WATL instituted the award 38 years ago to identify and recognize the good deeds and important work of outstanding Wisconsin trial lawyers.

    Michael T. Hopkins, Marquette 1981, received an LL.M. in Intellectual Property at The John Marshall Law School, Chicago, in January 2000. Hopkins recently joined Domnitz, Mawicke & Goisman S.C., Milwaukee, concentrating in intellectual property litigation.

    Erik G. Milito, Marquette 1995, was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal upon completion of service in the United States Army Judge Advocate General's Corps. Milito served in assignments at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii; Seoul, Korea; and Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland. He served in positions as prosecutor, family law attorney, defense counsel, and labor counsel. He now works in the solicitor's office of the Department of the Interior in Washington, D.C., practicing in personnel litigation and civil rights.

    Michael Lappin, U.W. 1992, and Mitchell Moser, Northwestern 1991, received the Young Men's Leadership Award from the Milwaukee Jewish Federation. Both are with Quarles & Brady LLP, Milwaukee; Lappin practicing in mergers and acquisitions, corporate law, and closely held businesses, and Moser practicing in product liability litigation. The award recognizes those who demonstrate outstanding qualities of leadership and involvement in the federation and other community activities.

    Paul P. Umentum, U.W. 1984, a shareholder in Wanezek, Umentum & Jaekels S.C., Green Bay, was ordained a permanent deacon for the Catholic Diocese of Green Bay by Bishop Robert Banks. He has been assigned to St. Mary of the Angels Parish, Green Bay. Deacon Umentum will continue to practice law in Green Bay as a general practitioner.

    Barry L. Grossman, American University 1974, an intellectual property partner in Foley & Lardner's Milwaukee office, is co-editor-in-chief of Patent Litigation Strategies Handbook, recently published by the American Bar Association and the Bureau of National Affairs.

    Robert W. Kohn, U.W. 1959, spoke to the National Association of Credit Management during its recent collection managers conference in Milwaukee. His morning presentation, "Compliance is the Name of the Game," concentrated on federal laws affecting the collection of debts nationwide. Kohn is president of Kohn Law Firm S.C., Milwaukee, which concentrates in commercial and retail debt collection and litigation.

    David Satola, U.W. 1986, presented "Legal and Regulatory Aspects of Telecommunications Privatizations" in Johannesburg, South Africa. Satola is senior counsel in the legal department of the World Bank, concentrating in telecommunications sector reform.

    Mark Schlei, U.W. 1987, addressed the Community State Bank Supervisors Annual Legal Conference in New Orleans, La. He spoke on state bank powers and parity. Schlei is deputy general counsel for the Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions.
