In the News
The Equal Justice Coalition presented the following awards at the State
Bar of Wisconsin's annual convention in June to: Brenda Konkel,
the Mary Lou Massignani Community Activist Award; Liz Corbitt,
the Legal Services Staff Advocate Award; Linda Barth and Mike
Gonring, Partners for Survival Awards; David Dreis, the Individual
Attorney Award; and Foley & Lardner, the Law Firm Award.
Quarles & Brady LLP has received the Volunteer
Lawyers Project Millennium Award from Legal Action of Wisconsin's
Volunteer Lawyers Project for many years of pro bono services
on behalf of low-income individuals.
Linda Roberson, U.W. 1974, and Linda S. Balisle,
U.W. 1979, are listed in the Best Lawyers in America,
1999-2000 edition.
Alex Gulotta, Marquette 1984, has received the 1999
Virginia Legal Aid Award from the Virginia State Bar's Access
to Legal Services Committee. One legal aid attorney in Virginia
receives the annual award for innovation, experience, and excellence
in advocacy on behalf of low-income clients. As executive director
of Charlottesville-Albermarle Legal Aid Society, Gulotta has
worked on several major consumer law cases that have altered
questionable government and business practices. He provides extensive
representation to low-income residents.
 Prof. June Weisberger
, University of Chicago 1963, received
the 1999 Marigold Melli Achievement Award. The annual award,
presented by the Legal Association for Women in Dane County,
recognizes outstanding professional achievements of women in
law. The award was established to honor Prof. Marigold Melli,
one of the first women law professors in Wisconsin. Weisberger
joined the U.W. Law School faculty in 1974, when women law professors
were uncommon. She became a leader in research and teaching,
and has made many contributions to legal education and to the
development of the law. Weisberger helped craft Wisconsin's
Marital Property Act, which was adopted in 1985.

Robert L. Habush, U.W. 1961, has received the 1999
Harry M. Philo Award. The Association of Trial Lawyers of America
honored Habush for "dedicating his career to safeguarding
the rights of individuals, championing the American civil justice
system, and serving as a protector of the public good."
Tracy I. Nightingale, Hamline 1991, was selected as
a leading American attorney by the American Research Corporation
in personal injury, alternative dispute resolution, and estate
planning. Nightingale also will appear in the millenium issues
of Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in American
Law, and the National Registry of Who's Who.
She concentrates in personal injury and estate planning at the
Hurwitz Law Firm in St. Louis Park, Minn.
Lynn Stathas, U.W. 1988, a graduate of Leadership Greater
Madison (LGM), received the 1999 Distinguished Leadership Award,
sponsored by the National Association for Community Leadership
and by Sprint. The award recognizes leadership program graduates
who have made significant and notable contributions to the betterment
of their community and who embody the spirit of, in this case,
LGM. Stathas is a civil litigation and employment law shareholder
at Reinhart, Boerner, VanDeuren, Norris & Reiselbach S.C.,
Madison.
The Trial Science Institute (TSI) has received the
grand prize for training facilities and classrooms in Presentations
Magazine's 1999 Best Presentation Rooms Awards. Criteria
for the award included the use of presentation technology, integration
of the technology into the room design, and the room's aesthetics.
The TSI facility, located at 1000 N. Water St., 23rd Fl., Milwaukee,
provides a way for attorneys to develop cutting-edge techniques
when handling trials. The facility is available to outside lawyers
and companies, and to individuals for meetings or video conferencing.
Timothy L. Vocke, U.W. 1973, graduated from the mediation
course sponsored by the Wisconsin Supreme Court and put on by
faculty members from the National Judicial College. Vocke practices
with Eckert, Kost & Vocke, Rhinelander, and is a reserve
judge. Course graduates are certified in civil mediation.
