Wisconsin Lawyer March 1999: Name that Judge

    Vol. 72, No. 3, March 1999

    Name that Judge

CaneQ: What Wisconsin appellate judge referees high school varsity basketball?

A: Hon. Thomas Cane, chief judge of the Wisconsin Court of Appeals.

Judge Cane has been refereeing basketball since 1985. He travels within a 100-mile radius of Wausau officiating high school varsity boys and girls basketball games.

"I have always liked basketball both as a participant and fan," Cane says. "I decided to quit playing competitive basketball when I went to the YMCA one noon hour and two young fellows were picking players for their team. One of them said, 'I'll take the old guy.' I looked around to see who he was talking about, and then realized he was talking about me. From then on, rather than playing basketball, I took up officiating as a hobby and enjoy it immensely."
