Wisconsin Lawyer September 1998: Name that Judge

    Vol. 71, No. 9, September 1998

    Name that Judge

Justice WilcoxQ: What supreme court justice is a member of Trout Unlimited and used to fish with a fellow Trout Unlimited member, Green Bay Packers defensive back Doug Hart?

A: Justice Jon P. Wilcox. Wilcox grew up in Wild Rose, Wis., where the days he spent hunting and fishing with his father led to a lifelong interest in wildlife and habitat conservation. He is a member of Ducks Unlimited, Trout Unlimited, and the Ruffed Grouse Society and participates in the annual bird count for the Audubon Society. Wilcox met Hart through mutual fishing buddies more than 10 years ago.

Wilcox was a member of the Wisconsin Conservation Congress from 1975 to 1980. He also served in the state legislature from 1969 to 1975, where he introduced legislation that became known as the "trout stamp bill." This law requires the payment of a fee in order to fish for trout. The funds generated by the trout stamp are used primarily for cold water resource preservation.
