    Name that judge...

Q: What Wisconsin Court of Appeals judge once performed a wedding underwater?

A: The Hon. Patricia S. Curley, Wisconsin Court of Appeals, District I.

On Sept. 3, 1994, Judge Curley performed the wedding of two scuba diving instructors during Maritime Days, a festival held on Milwaukee's lakeshore. The ceremony took place in a huge Plexiglass® tank the couple had rented for the occasion. Judge Curley, who also scuba dives, recalls sewing weights into the bottom of her judicial robe so that it wouldn't float up. "The wedding party and I communicated using a new, very sophisticated underwater communication device." The wedding made the front page of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel the following day.

"Name that Judge" is sponsored by the State Bar's Litigation Section's Appellate Practice Subcommittee.
