The Law Offices of Marc Jay Bern P.C. have relocated to the Empire State Building, 350 5th Ave., Suite 1134, New York, N.Y. Marc Jay Bern continues to concentrate in handling complex personal injury matters for plaintiffs including medical malpractice and medical products liability. The Madison law firm of Boardman, Suhr, Curry & Field LLP announces that Laura M. Sutherland, U.W. 1989, Joseph W. Byrne, U.W. 1997 cum laude, Richard A. Heinemann, U.W. 1998 cum laude, and Kirsten E. Spira, U.W. 1998 cum laude, have become associates of the firm. George R. Corrigan, U.W. 1989 cum laude, has become of counsel to the firm.

Sutherland served as a Wisconsin assistant attorney general from 1990-98, and as the public intervenor on the proposed Crandon Mine. She served as the attorney general's designee on the Wisconsin Public Records Board and cochaired the State Bar of Wisconsin committee on public records and open meetings. She will practice in environmental and municipal law, open records law, and general litigation.

Byrne practices in intellectual property law, including patents, trademarks, and copyrights. He holds an M.S. degree in electrical engineering and previously was employed by General Electric Medical Systems in Waukesha as a design engineer.

Heinemann formerly served as editor-in-chief of the Wisconsin Law Review. He also holds a Ph.D. in German and Social Thought from the University of Chicago, where he taught prior to joining the firm.

Spira previously was managing editor of the Wisconsin Law Review and was a member of the Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity. She will practice in banking and securities.

Corrigan practices in intellectual property law, focusing on patent rights. His technical background includes working for the U.W. Medical Physics Calibration Lab. He has represented companies with extensive patent portfolios, as well as those with limited intellectual property.

Scott J. Campbell, Michigan 1990, is serving as legal counsel to the president of the Republic of Palau, a newly independent country located in Micronesia. He formerly was employed as an assistant attorney general for the Republic.

Curtis R. Czachor, U.W. 1992, and Timothy F. Polack, U.W. 1995, have formed the law firm of Czachor & Polack at 308 Cherry St., Green Bay, practicing personal injury, real estate, estate planning, business law, and bankruptcy. Czachor & Polack also have opened Liberty Title & Abstract, providing title insurance and title services.

Bradley I. Dallet, Case Western Reserve 1994, has joined the Milwaukee office of Whyte Hirschboeck Dudek S.C. as an associate. He will concentrate in commercial lending and real estate law. He formerly was with the law firm of Domnitz, Mawicke, Goisman & Rosenberg S.C. At Case Western he was elected to the Order of the Coif and served as notes editor for the Case Western Reserve Law Review. He is admitted to practice in Wisconsin and before the U.S. District Court for the Eastern and Western Districts of Wisconsin.

Mary L. Hubacher, U.W. 1991 cum laude, and Louis F. Raymond, Minnesota 1991 cum laude, have been elected shareholders at Davis & Kuelthau S.C., Milwaukee. Hubacher is a member of the Labor and Employment Section, where she counsels public and private sector management on employment issues. She also advises school districts on issues such as student discipline, student harassment, pupil records, and open meetings compliance.

Raymond is a member of the Litigation Section, where he provides counsel on insurance defense and general civil litigation. He handles a wide variety of claims for insurance companies, with a heavy concentration on personal injury cases, class action litigation, admiralty and maritime law, aviation law, construction law, and ERISA litigation.

Milwaukee County Circuit Court judges John J. Di Motto, U.W. 1974, and Jean W. Di Motto, Marquette 1984, together with a judge from Germany, taught a six-day seminar for Chinese judges about the American and German systems of law, with a particular focus on criminal law, procedure, and process. The seminar was held in Beijing at the Supreme Court of the People's Republic of China in May, and was attended by 75 Chinese judges, law professors, and prosecutors.

The Door-Kewaunee County Bar Association has elected these officers: president - Ellen M. Pelnar, Kewaunee; president-elect - Louis J. Hovda, Green Bay; and secretary/treasurer - Richard S. Hoyerman, Sturgeon Bay.

Michael Dubis, practicing in Waterford, has just published a historical fiction novel, The Hangman, dealing with the Holocaust, Nazi Germany, and dwelling on a "good man" gone bad and how he tries to escape the Nazi vice.

Robert A. DuPuy, Cornell 1973 with honors, a litigation partner in Foley & Lardner's Milwaukee office, has been chosen to serve as executive vice president of administration and chief legal officer of Major League Baseball. He has represented Major League Baseball in a wide range of legal matters since 1989. DuPuy will relocate to New York City for his new position. He will remain a partner in Foley & Lardner, where he serves on the firm's Management Committee and chairs its Professional Standards Committee, which oversees issues related to professional ethics.

Matthew R. Falk, U.W. 1994, has joined the litigation team of the Milwaukee office of Domnitz, Mawicke, Goisman & Rosenberg S.C.

Robert E. Meldman and Michael G. Goller, tax attorneys with the law firm of Reinhart, Boerner, Van Deuren, Norris & Rieselbach S.C., Milwaukee office, have written Federal Taxation Practice and Procedure Study Guide/Quizzer. The book takes the reader through the IRS's procedures in determining, reviewing, litigating, and collecting taxes.

Meldman's practice focuses on tax controversies and the tax aspects of general business and international transactions. He is an adjunct professor for the U.W. Milwaukee's Masters of Taxation and Graduate International Business programs and is an executive in residence at the Deloitte & Touche Center for Multistate Taxation at the U.W. Milwaukee.

Goller's practice focuses on tax controversy, tax litigation, and tax planning. He is a frequent speaker on these subjects and has represented clients before the IRS and Wisconsin Department of Revenue. The book is available from CCH Inc., Chicago, Ill.

Roxanne F. Felizmena, Marquette 1993, has joined the staff of the State Bar of Wisconsin as a legal editor in CLE Books. In addition, she is currently an assistant adjunct professor of law at Marquette, teaching a course in legal writing and legal communication. She formerly was associated with Raymond Law Office in Milwaukee.

Thomas A. Fessler, Pepperdine 1983, has been promoted to senior counsel for International Paper Company. He formerly was the vice president and general counsel for Dover Elevators in Memphis, Tenn., before joining the legal department of International Paper in 1996 at its headquarters in Memphis.

Robert A. Fleischacker, California Western 1987, has joined Stoughton Trailers Inc. as general counsel and secretary. He previously was assistant general counsel for Sta-Rite Industries Inc.

Five associate attorneys have joined Foley & Lardner's Madison office, broadening the range of services offered to clients: Tony D. Alexander, U.W. 1998, and Bernard P. Friedrichsen, U.W. 1998, practice in the Intellectural Property Department; Susan L. Collins, U.W. 1995, is a member of the Estates & Trusts Group; Sharon Mollman-Elliott, Indiana 1993 summa cum laude, is in the Litigation Department; and Michael H. Wussow, U.W. 1996, practices in the Business Law Department. Alexander has a diverse practice involving biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, trademarks, copyrights, and taxation. Collins worked for the State Bar of Wisconsin for the past two years as a legal editor on new book projects, and earlier practiced with Boardman, Suhr, Curry & Field. Mollman-Elliott was recently of Jones, Day, Reavis & Pogue, where she practiced since 1993 as an appellate litigator before the U.S. Supreme Court and other courts of appeals. Friedrichsen practices in intellectural property and is a member of the firm's Chemical and Biotechnology Practice groups. His practice currently involves chemistry, patents, trademarks and copyrights. He holds a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the U.W.-Madison. Wussow focuses his practice on business and corporate law. He previously practiced with Sidley & Austin in Chicago.

Matthew I. Fraidin, U.W. 1993, has joined the Legal Aid Society of the District of Columbia as a staff attorney, handling child custody, domestic violence, landlord-tenant, and public benefits cases. He formerly served as associate counsel to Vice President Al Gore.

Anne Gallagher, U.W. 1988, has been elected treasurer emeritus of the Legal Marketing Association (LMA), formerly known as the National Law Firm Marketing Association. She is a partner of Gallagher Lazarus & Co., Chicago. She is an experienced marketing consultant and writer providing business-to-business marketing, writing and media relations, crisis communications, and presentation training services to professional services companies. She has served as LMA's treasurer for four years. She also serves as North American editor for Professional Marketing magazine and a correspondent for The Lawyer, a weekly legal publication in London.

Caren B. Goldberg, U.W. 1984, has been promoted to associate executive director of the Jewish Community Foundation. She will continue to concentrate in planned giving. The Jewish Community Foundation is the endowment development program of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation.

Mimi C. Goller, Marquette 1993, has joined the Patent & Trademark Department of Abbott Laboratories, Abbott Park, Ill., where she practices in biotechnology patent law. Abbott Laboratories, a Fortune 500 company, is a world leader in health-care products, including diagnostics and pharmaceuticals. Goller formerly was associated with the Milwaukee firm of Andrus, Sceales, Starke & Sawall.

Michael J. Gratz, U.W. 1994, an associate in the Milwaukee office of Whyte Hirschboeck Dudek S.C., has been reappointed vice chair of the Milwaukee Bar Association's Intellectual Property Law Section for 1998-99. Gratz serves clients in intellectual property law, including patents, trademarks, and copyrights.

Martin J. Greenberg, Marquette 1971, has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. He also has been appointed to the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the Wisconsin Amateur Sports Corporation, the organizers of the Badger States Games. Milwaukee attorney Greenberg also spoke recently at the ABA Annual Meeting on "Stadium and Arena Issues for Lawyers in the Coming Millennium."

Richard B. Hess, Nebraska 1994, has joined the Brookfield law firm of Host & Keane S.C. as an associate. He will engage in the general practice of law with particular emphasis in criminal law, family law, and general civil litigation.

Cheryl L. Hill, Marquette 1987, was one of 10 Northern Michigan University alumni honored during the Homecoming celebration in September. Hill is a general practice attorney who has worked in Michigan and Wisconsin since 1987. She has taken a court-appointed case before the Michigan Supreme Court. For this case, Hill received the Distinguished Brief Award from the Thomas M. Cooley Law Review.

Bradden C. Backer, U.W. 1981, Kim E. Patterson, U.W. 1989, and Robert K. Sholl, Chicago 1981, are the authors of a new edition of Hiring and Firing in Wisconsin, published in August 1998 by the State Bar of Wisconsin CLE Books.

Aaron M. Hurvitz, U.W. 1998, has joined Gimbel, Reilly, Guerin & Brown, Milwaukee, as an associate practicing in employment law and civil litigation.

William A. Jennaro, Marquette 1968, shareholder at Cook & Franke S.C., has been appointed to the Board of Directors for the Wisconsin Trust Account Foundation Inc. (WisTAF). WisTAF accepts grant applications, makes grants, and expends funds received under Wisconsin SCR 20.50(3) to provide legal aid to the poor and to fund programs for the benefit of the public as may be specifically approved from time to time by Wisconsin Supreme Court for exclusively public purposes. The source of the funds into the WisTAF Foundation is from the interest earned on attorney's trust accounts (IOLTA), which is then paid into the foundation.

Michael J. Katarincic, Marquette 1997 cum laude, recently opened Katarincic Law Office LLC, in the Plaza Building at 250 E. Wisconsin Ave., Suite 725, Milwaukee, 53202. David L. Kinnamon, U.W. 1966, a partner in Quarles & Brady, has been appointed by Gov. Thompson to the Benevolent Retirement Home for the Aged Task Force. The Task Force was established by the Wisconsin Legislature to investigate and report on the current property tax exemption for benevolent retirement homes for the aged. Kinnamon practices in estate planning and exempt organization law, and serves as group leader of the law firm's exempt organization practice group.

Daniel P. Kirschnik, Thomas M. Cooley 1998 cum laude, has joined the Law Offices of James L. Kirschnik S.C., Brookfield.

Bonnie S. Liss, Marquette 1991, has joined Charter Title Services of Wisconsin Inc., Brookfield, as title attorney. She formerly was engaged in private practice in Milwaukee.

Jackson T. Main Jr., U.W. 1988, has joined Previant, Goldberg, Uelmen, Gratz, Miller & Brueggeman as an associate at the firm's Green Bay location. Commencing on Jan. 4, 1999, he will practice in family law, criminal defense, estate planning, traffic, personal injury, and worker's compensation. Main formerly was the Kewaunee County district attorney from 1991-98.

Marc J. Marotta, Harvard 1987, a partner of Foley & Lardner, has been appointed by Gov. Thompson to the Wisconsin Technical College System Board of Directors. The board oversees the 16 districts and 46 campuses of the Wisconsin Technical College System, which has more than 430,000 students. In his law practice, Marotta represents public and private companies in mergers, acquisitions, dispositions, corporate restructurings and recapitalizations, and public and private equity and debt financings.

Salvatore Massa, U.W. 1997, has joined the U.S. Department of Justice - Antitrust Division in Washington, D.C. He presently is assigned to the division's Transportation, Energy and Agriculture Section.

Lisa Kleiner Wood, Marquette 1997 cum laude, and David W. Maas, U.W. 1998, have joined the Milwaukee firm of McNally, Maloney & Peterson S.C. as associates. Shelly M. Principe, Marquette 1989, has co-authored a chapter in The Visa Processing Guide: Process and Procedures at U.S. Consulates and Embassies, 6th Edition, published by the American Immigration Lawyers Association. The chapter is about the U.S. Embassy in Budapest, Hungary. Principe is senior attorney at Fragomen, Del Rey, Bernsen & Loewy P.L.L.C., Chicago.

Carl R. Schwartz, Harvard 1978, a partner in Quarles & Brady, is the new president of the Wisconsin Intellectual Property Law Association, an organization of attorneys, patent agents, and others in Wisconsin interested in intellectual property law. He formerly was president of the State Bar's Intellectual Property Law Section. His legal practice focuses on intellectual property and trade regulation law.

Laura C. Smythe, U.W. 1997, has joined the Sutter Law Firm, Appleton, practicing in estate planning, real estate, Indian law, and mediations.

Suzanne D. Strater, Marquette 1994 cum laude, is an attorney with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Division of Enforcement, in Chicago. Strater formerly was a staff attorney with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.

Joel B. Teitelbaum, Marquette 1996, George Washington 1998 LL.M.-Health, was appointed assistant professor of health services management and policy at the George Washington School of Public Health and Health Services. Teitelbaum is a research scientist concentrating in issues related to Medicaid-managed care with the school's Center for Health Policy Research, and the associate director of its Hirsh Health Law and Policy Program.

Steven J. Thomas, Marquette 1992, has joined Kohl's Department Stores Inc., Menomonee Falls, as senior attorney. He previously practiced with ShopKo Stores Inc. as senior attorney/senior litigation attorney.

Rose Ann Wasserman, U.W. 1984, is the author of a new edition of the book, A Guide to Wisconsin Employment Discrimination Law, published in July 1998 by the State Bar of Wisconsin CLE Books.

Michael P. Waxman, Boston College 1972, of counsel at the Milwaukee law firm of Godfrey & Kahn S.C. and Professor of Law at Marquette University Law School, has been elected chair of the State Bar International Practice Section for 1998-99. He also has been elected to membership in the American Law Institute, and reelected to the Executive Committee and Board of Directors of the Milwaukee Jewish Council for Community Relations. Waxman, a 1987-88 Fulbright Scholar at the University of Tokyo and Sophia University in Japan, and 1993-94 Senior Fulbright Professor of Osaka and Kobe Universities, recently returned from teaching International Litigation and Arbitration this summer with the Faculty of Law at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia.

David P. Tom Wiensch, U.W. 1986, has become the assistant corporation counsel for Oneida County.

Lisa M. Wilson, Marquette 1997, has joined the Milwaukee firm of Fellows, Piper & Schmidt as an associate attorney.

The Wisconsin Academy of Trial Lawyers New Lawyers Section recently received the Association of Trial Lawyers of America New Lawyers Division 1998 Outstanding State New Lawyer Division Award. The section provides a forum for members in practice less than 10 years to exchange ideas and formulate programs to become better advocates for injured consumers. Wisconsin won the prize for its efforts during the first year after foundation. Jay A. Urban, Marquette 1992, chair, accepted the award on behalf of the section. Urban is a plaintiffs' personal injury litigation attorney with Techmeier & Van Grunsven S.C., Milwaukee.

The Wisconsin Association of Minority Lawyers has elected these officers: president - Christy Brown Laflore; president-elect - Christopher Ware; secretary - Maria S. Dixon; and treasurer - Sherman C. Mitchell; all of Milwaukee.

The Wisconsin State Elections Board elected new officers for 1998-99: chair - Don M. Millis, U.W. 1990; vice-chair - John P. Savage, Marquette 1967; and secretary - Michael D. Brennan, St. Louis 1976. Millis is a member of the Wisconsin Tax Appeals Commission, Madison. Savage operates the Law Offices of John P. Savage, Milwaukee. Brennan is a shareholder in the firm of Garczynski & Brennan Law Offices S.C., Elkhorn.

The Wisconsin Supreme Court has appointed attorney Philip R. Brehm and Wisconsin Court of Appeals Judge Charles P. Dykman to three-year terms on the Wisconsin Judicial Commission. Brehm is a member of the Green Bay law firm of Everson, Whitney, Everson and Brehm S.C. Judge Dykman is a judge on the District IV Court of Appeals headquartered in Madison. He has served on the court of appeals since 1978. The Judicial Commission's nine members investigate and prosecute allegations of judicial misconduct and disability on the part of Wisconsin judges and court commissioners.
