    Chief Justice Shirley S. Abrahamson has been elected a fellow of the National Academy of Arts and Sciences.

    Steven E. Anderson, U.W. 1989, has become assistant general counsel with Glimcher Realty Trust in Columbus, Ohio. He formerly was employed by Murphy & Desmond S.C. and Famous Footwear, both in Madison.

    David R. Berman, Marquette 1993, has left Gagliardi, Nelson & O'Brien S.C., and has joined with John Anthony Ward, John Marshall 1985, and Gary N. Lento, Catholic 1992, to form Ward, Lento & Berman, Attorneys at Law located at 24414 75th St., Salem. Berman continues to focus on family, criminal and civil litigation.

    Laurene M. Brooks, Marquette 1990, has joined Associated Bank, Neenah, as assistant vice president-personal trust officer. She formerly was a practicing attorney in a large Milwaukee law firm where she focused in estate planning and probate and tax-exempt organizations.

    Holly M. Casavant, U.W. 1992, has been appointed assistant secretary of Wisconsin Mutual Insurance Co., Madison. She will continue her duties as human resources director.

    Rodney L. Cubbie, Marquette 1980, a former assistant U.S. attorney with more than 12 years' experience in criminal prosecution, has joined Foley & Lardner's Milwaukee office as a partner in the litigation department. He will practice compliance, counseling and white-collar representation.

    The Door-Kewaunee County Bar Association has elected these officers: president -Brett E. Reetz, Fish Creek; president-elect -Ellen M. Pelnar, Kewaunee; and secretary/treasurer - Louis J. Hovda, Green Bay.

    The Eau Claire County Bar Association has elected these officers: president - Donald R. Marjala; president-elect - Michael F. O'Brien; secretary - Steven V. Schlitz; treasurer - Susan M. Meade, all of Eau Claire.

    Three associates have joined Foley & Lardner's Milwaukee office, expanding its practice offerings in three areas. Richard J. McKenna, Case Western Reserve 1988 cum laude, is a senior associate in the intellectual property department. Victoria A. Dukatz, Michigan 1996, practices in the real estate group, and Gerry L. Williams, Indiana 1995, is a member of the securities group.

    Randi L. Osberg, Marquette 1982, has become a shareholder with the Eau Claire firm of Garvey, Anderson, Johnson, Gabler & Geraci S.C. Tara J. Bohling, U.W. 1996, has joined the firm as an associate concentrating in estate planning. Christopher M. Seelen, Marquette 1997, also has joined the firm as an associate concentrating in business.

    Godfrey & Kahn S.C. will provide the Financial Services Compliance Network (FSCN) with a summary of recent legislative and regulatory developments governing banking, securities and insurance in Wisconsin. FSCN is a service offered over the Internet that provides a comprehensive set of resources for individuals concerned with banking, securities, and insurance compliance. The firm will regularly update the summary.

    Janet L. Heins, U.W. 1991, has relocated Heins Law Office LLC to 1001 W. Glen Oaks Lane, Suite 220, Mequon. The firm practices primarily in plaintiff's employment law and post-divorce family law.

    The State Bar's book Hiring and Firing in Wisconsin has received the Award for Professional Excellence, ACLEA's top award for a publication. ACLEA is the association for continuing legal educators. Congratulations to Cathy Loeb, Margie DeWind and Jackie Johnson for a great job on the editing, cite checking and production - and thanks to Tod Florey for the jazzy cover!

    Brad M. Hoeft, Marquette 1997 cum laude, has joined the Port Washington law firm of Huiras, Farrell and Antoine as an associate, concentrating in family law, criminal defense, corporate and the general practice of law.

    Aaron J. Janssen, U.W. 1997, has joined the Appleton law firm of Sigman, Janssen, Stack, Wenning & Wilson, practicing in commercial, business and real estate law.

    The Jefferson County Bar Association has elected these officers: president - Jennifer L. Weston, Whitewater; president-elect - Bennett J. Brantmeier, Jefferson; and secretary/treasurer - Lennie A. Weber, Milwaukee.

    Siobhan R. Keenan, Maryland 1995, former law clerk to the Hon. Warren J. Krug of the Circuit Court for Calvert County Maryland, has joined the law firm of Schuster & Mader, Madison, as an associate practicing in family, criminal and elder law.

    Ken Kirley, UCLA 1990, has been named vice president and general counsel of OCI Communications Inc., a start-up local telephone company in Minneapolis, Minn. He formerly was with Robins, Kaplan, Miller & Ciresi in Minneapolis.

    Cristen Kogl, U.W. 1991, former counsel for Andersen Worldwide, has become senior counsel for Spyglass Inc. She will provide intellectual property and integrated license/ service arrangements expertise.

    Chad W. Koplien, Marquette 1997, has joined Host & Keane S.C., Brookfield and Milwaukee, as an associate emphasizing litigation work, personal injury, criminal defense and family law.

    Aaron E. Kornblum, U.W. 1996, has been promoted to Captain and has been assigned to the 90th Missile Wing at F.E. Warren AFB in Cheyenne, Wyoming. As an assistant staff judge advocate, he is chief of legal assistance and preventive law programs and prosecutes courts-martial cases.

    Gregory P. Kult, U.W. 1994, has joined the Milwaukee law firm of
    von Briesen, Purtell & Roper S.C. as an associate practicing in the labor and employment law section. He was previously with Hall, Render, Killian, Heath & Lyman P.C., Indiana.

    Martin J. Kurzer, Marquette 1968, a Miami attorney and litigation communication consultant, recently presented "Trial Preparation with Neurolinguistics in Mind" to the American Society of Trial Consultants. He also presented "Cutting Edge Communication Skills" last fall to the American Association of Attorney-Certified Public Accountants.

    Legal Action of Wisconsin Inc. and the Milwaukee Young Lawyers Association Volunteer Lawyers Project honored outstanding Milwaukee attorneys for donating their services to the low-income community. This year's "Outstanding Pro Bono Services by an Individual Attorney" awards went to: Viola P. Hazley-Williams, Emanuel N. Rotter, Jacqueline Boynton of Boynton, Earle & Colon, and Peter L. Ramirez, of Brennan, Ramirez, Wilmouth & Sesini. The "Outstanding Services Provided to the Volunteer Lawyers Project" award went to American Family Insurance.

    Legal Action of Wisconsin Inc. and its Volunteer Lawyers Project has presented this year's Pro Bono Publico awards to the following individuals and firms for their outstanding service to the community: Mary Lou Massignani Community Activist Award - Eloisa Gomez, Campaign for Sustainable Milwaukee, and Julie Maurer; Beyond the Call Award - John S. Skilton and Maureen A. McGinnity, both of Foley & Lardner; Law Firm Award - Polidori & Bussler; Partners for Survival Award - John A. St. Peter, Edgarton, St. Peter, Petak, Massey & Bullon; Volunteer Attorney Award - John G. Movroydis, Druck & Swartzberg S.C.; and Legal Services Staff Advocate Award - Hal Menendez, Madison office of Legal Action of Wisconsin.

    Catherine A. Lemmer, U.W. 1989, has become a partner in the Chicago, Ill., law firm of Vedder, Price, Kaufman & Kammholz. Lemmer counsels clients in the banking and financial services industry regarding regulatory and general corporate matters.

    Dr. Stephen Lesavich, U.W. 1995, has been appointed to the ABA Intellectual Property and Computer Law Committee 510 for 1997-98. He is an associate at the intellectual property law firm of Klarquist Sparkman Campbell Leigh & Whinstion LLP, Portland, Ore.

    Brenda L. Lewison, U.W. 1995, has moved her law offices to 135 W. Wells St., Suite 340, Milwaukee. Her practice emphasizes labor and employment law. She has expanded her practice to include representation in housing discrimination and tenant's rights matters.

    Christopher A. Liegel, U.W. 1992 cum laude, has joined Hale, Skemp, Hanson, Skemp & Sleik, La Crosse, as an associate. He had been a Milwaukee County assistant district attorney.

    Paul S. Medved, Columbia, and Scott R. Halloin, Northwestern, recently joined Mallery & Zimmerman S.C. as shareholders and Robert J. Diaz, U.W., joined the firm as an associate. All three attorneys will practice in the firm's Milwaukee office in its growing commercial bankruptcy practice. Medved, formerly a partner of Michael, Best & Friedrich, practices primarily in commercial bankruptcy, litigation and creditors' rights law. He has been included in The Best Lawyers in America for each edition since 1987.

    Halloin, formerly associated with Foley & Lardner, practices primarily in construction and other litigation, commercial bankruptcy and creditors' rights law. Diaz will practice primarily in commercial litigation, bankruptcy and creditors' rights law.

    Toby E. Marcovich, U.W. 1954, was appointed by Gov. Thompson to the U.W. Board of Regents for a seven-year term.

    The Marinette County Bar Association has elected these officers: president - Gale R. Mattison; president-elect - Charles K. Kenyon Jr.; and secretary/treasurer - Nancy J. Kallgren, all of Marinette.

    Miller Brewing Co. announces: Albert R. Butler, Indiana 1977, has been named senior assistant general counsel overseeing all employment and labor-related matters; Michael T. Jones, Marquette 1984, has been named associate general counsel and assistant secretary overseeing all international and marketing-related matters; Karen A. Ripley, U.W. 1981, has been named senior assistant general counsel overseeing all sales and distribution-related matters; and Katherine (Kelly) Grebe, U.W. 1993, formerly of Quarles & Brady, has joined the company as senior counsel. She will handle legal matters for Miller's Western Sales Region.

    Michele D. Miller, U.W. 1991, formerly of Herrick Law Office, S.C., Fond du Lac, has joined Wisconsin Physicians Service Insurance Corp. (WPS) in Madison as associate counsel.

    The Milwaukee Bar Association has elected these officers: president - William A. Jenaro; president-elect - Gregg M. Herman; vice president - Hannah C. Dugan; secretary - Kathy L. Nusslock; and treasurer - John Scripp; all of Milwaukee.

    The Milwaukee Young Lawyers Association has elected these officers: president - Christopher J. Stawski; president-elect - Elizabeth L. Wolf; secretary - Bradley I. Dallet; and treasurer - Patricia A. Hintz, all of Milwaukee.

    Mark P. Murphy, U.W. 1991, has moved his solo practice to 7430 Harwood Ave., Ste. 100, Wauwatosa. Murphy's practice focuses primarily in civil and criminal litigation.

    Erica R. Nikodem, U.W. 1997, has become law clerk to the Hon. William E. Callahan Jr., U.S. Magistrate Judge for the Eastern District of Wisconsin.

    The Oneida-Vilas-Forest County Bar Association has elected these officers: president - Thomas E. Lawrence II, Minocqua; president-elect - Lawrence J. Wiesneske, Rhinelander; secretary - Clark G. Paulson, Rhinelander; and treasurer - Alexander E. Brown, Eagle River.

    Jesse R. Ostrom, U.W. 1997, has joined the Fox Valley law firm of
    Di Renzo and Bomier as an associate. Ostrom practices in personal injury litigation, commercial litigation and family law.

    Joseph T. Kreye, U.W. 1997, has joined the Madison office of Otjen, Van Ert, Stangle, Lieb & Weir S.C. as an associate practicing in insurance defense and other civil litigation matters. Brett D. Stacey, Marquette 1997, has joined the firm in its Milwaukee office as an associate practicing in insurance defense and other civil litigation matters.

    The Outagamie County Bar Association has elected these officers: president - Michael E. Rudolph; president-elect - Nila J. Robinson; secretary - Chad V. Cassiani; and treasurer - Richard J. Carlson; all of Appleton.

    The Racine County Bar Association has elected these officers: president - William R. Binetti; president-elect - Jeffrey L. Leavell; secretary - Giuilio Fornary; and treasurer - John G. Schulz; all of Racine.

    Legal Action of Wisconsin Inc. opened the Racine Family Law Office at 521 Sixth St., Racine. Gai Ann Lorenzen is the family law attorney of the office. Andrea Schultz, Marquette 1995, is a VISTA (Volunteer in Service to America) attorney in the office. Lorenzen previously headed the Racine County Office of Child Support and was an attorney in private practice. Schultz formerly was in private practice.

    Mark R. Raddatz, Marquette 1997, has joined the Milwaukee law firm of Bass & Moglowsky S.C.

    Timothy J. Randall, Marquette 1997 cum laude, has joined Fellows, Piper & Schmidt, Milwaukee, as an associate attorney.

    Scott P. Richardson, Marquette 1994, NYU LL.M.-Taxation 1995, has joined the Milwaukee office of Deloitte & Touche LLP as an associate in the estate planning department. He formerly was an associate in estate planning at Ernst & Young LLP, Milwaukee.

    Dorothy L. Bain, U.W. 1989, and Mary Ellen Schill, Notre Dame 1988, have become shareholders in the firm of Ruder, Ware & Michler S.C., Wausau. Bain practices in litigation and family law; Schill practices in employee benefits law.

    David P. Ruetz, Montana 1990, has joined the Milwaukee law firm of von Briesen, Purtell & Roper S.C. as an associate practicing with the environmental law group. He previously served as president of Drake Environmental Inc.

    Christopher J. Stawski, Marquette 1986, has been named as a liaison to the ABA Dispute Resolution Committee by the ABA Young Lawyers Division. Stawski will serve as vice chair of the membership committee starting in September.

    Laurel Stevenson, Missouri-Columbia 1989, has joined the Springfield office of the Kansas City-based law firm of Franke & Schultz. She previously was legal counsel for Capitol Indemnity Corp. in Madison.

    Mary Corbett Stevenson, Marquette 1987, formerly of Sullivan & Stevenson, has created The Stevenson Group S.C. offering the general practice of immigration law with special emphasis in business immigration law, naturalization and employer sanctions. Offices are located at 243 E. Buffalo St., Milwaukee.

    Dennis M. Sullivan, John Marshall 1984, has left Sullivan & Stevenson to establish his own practice at the Sullivan Law Firm S.C., 759 N. Milwaukee St., Milwaukee. He will continue to concentrate in representing businesses and individuals in employment-based immigration matters.

    Lisa N. Sweet, U.W. 1994, has joined Dudley Topper & Feuerzeig in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, as an associate practicing real estate, financing and commercial law. She previously practiced estate planning and financing with Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal in Chicago, Ill.

Mark Hollinger, Marquette 1997, recently joined WPPA as staff attorney practicing labor law and negotiating labor agreements.
