Kathleen Anne Barrett, Marquette 1983, is the author of an amateur sleuth mystery series set in Milwaukee. Milwaukee Winters Can Be Murder, the first in the series, was released in October 1996. Milwaukee Summers Can Be Deadly was released in May 1997. She currently is finishing Milwaukee Autumns Can Be Fatal. Barrett writes full-time, no longer practicing law.

Thomas J. Basting Jr., Vermont 1992, has joined Fetterly & Gordon P.A., Minneapolis, Minn., practicing in general civil litigation, with emphasis on fire-related cases. He previously was associated with Michael, Best & Friedrich, Milwaukee.

Kimberly K. Baxter, U.W. 1994, previously an associate with Palmatier, Sjoquist, Helget & Voight P.A., Minneapolis, Minn., has joined the intellectual property law firm of Patterson & Keough P.A., Minneapolis. She will practice in patent and trademark law with a focus on electrical patent prosecution.

Jeffrey A. Berens, Marquette 1996 cum laude, has joined the law firm of Dyer Donnelly in Denver, Colo. The firm practices in class action securities fraud and consumer class actions. Berens formerly was an associate with Beck, Chaet, Loomis, Molony & Bamberger S.C., Milwaukee.

Frank L. Bernstein, U.W. 1984, an intellectual property attorney and partner in Sughrue, Mion, Zinn, Macpeak & Seas PLLC in Washington, D.C., will open his firm's first California office in Menlo Park in September.

Corporate Practices Institute Inc. recently elected the following officers: president - Kathy L. Nusslock, Cook & Franke S.C.; vice president - Michael T. Hart, Whyte Hirschboeck Dudek S.C.; treasurer - Robert E. Bellin, Reinhart, Boerner, Van Deuren, Norris & Rieselbach S.C.; and secretary - Keith A. Christiansen, Foley & Lardner. CPI provides continuing legal education on issues of corporate law.

The Dodge County Bar Association recently elected these officers: president - Joseph G. Sciascia, Juneau; president-elect - Daniel L. Vande Zande, Waupun; and secretary/treasurer - Karl A. Green, Columbus.

Michael P. Dunn, Notre Dame 1985 cum laude, has joined Michael, Best & Friedrich as a partner in the firm's Milwaukee office, where he will continue his practice of environmental law, commercial litigation, bankruptcy and creditors' rights litigation. He formerly was a partner with Davis & Kuelthau S.C., Milwaukee.

Kathleen Falk, U.W. 1977, resigned as an assistant attorney general in the Wisconsin Department of Justice upon being elected Dane County Executive in April for a four-year term.

Mary Sue Feldmeier, U.W. 1988, has been appointed an assistant U.S. attorney for the District of Arizona where she prosecutes narcotics and money laundering cases. She previously was an Illinois assistant attorney general.

Mel Flanagan, Circuit Court Branch 4, Milwaukee County, has been appointed the Midwest director of the National Association of Women Judges for a two-year term. NAWJ recently held a regional meeting in Milwaukee and hosted judges from municipal, circuit, appellate, state supreme and federal courts from Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri and Iowa. Judge Mel Flanagan and Judge Maxine White, of the Milwaukee County Circuit Court, were in Washington, D.C., recently to present Attorney General Janet Reno an award from NAWJ for her outstanding achievements in law.

Three attorneys have joined Foley & Lardner's Milwaukee office: Michael D. Rechtin, Chicago Kent 1983 with honors, formerly of Reinhart Boerner Van Deuren Norris & Rieselbach, joins the firm as an intellectual property partner; Joseph C. Monahan, U.W. 1993 cum laude, Order of the Coif, formerly of Portland, Ore., practices as a commercial litigation associate; and Leigh Riley, Pennsylvania 1995 magna cum laude, arrives from Philadelphia as an associate in the employee benefits group.

Douglas H. Frazer, Northwestern 1985, and Karen M. Schapiro, Northwestern 1985, have joined their law practices as Frazer & Schapiro S.C. The firm is at 135 W. Wells St., Suite 604, Milwaukee. Frazer's practice continues to emphasize civil tax litigation and criminal tax defense. Schapiro's practice concentrates on environmental law.

Jennifer A. Garvey, U.W. 1976, has joined the legal staff of KPMG (Maputo) concentrating in energy, natural resources, tax and investment. She previously worked as legal counsel in the Mozambican Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy.

Philip E. Harris, Chicago 1997, began a leave of absence from U.W.-Madison to serve as the director of the Small Business Resource Center, a division of Total Administrative Services Corp., Madison. The center provides continuing education for professionals who serve small businesses.

Gerardo (Jerry) Hernández, Marquette 1993, has joined the William Estrella Law Offices in San Juan, Puerto Rico, as an associate. Hernández will practice in civil litigation, employment law and sports and entertainment law in local and federal courts.

Steven D. Hitzeman, Marquette 1988, has become a shareholder in Previant, Goldberg, Uelmen, Gratz, Miller & Brueggeman S.C., Milwaukee. Hitzeman operates the firm's Green Bay office and practices in personal injury, worker's compensation and Social Security disability law.

Michael F. Hupy, Marquette 1972, has repurchased his former partner's shares in the law firm formerly known as Jacobson & Hupy S.C. and renamed the law firm Michael F. Hupy & Associates S.C. The firm's address and phone number remain the same. All associate attorneys, Dale R. Nikolay, Timothy J. Rymer, Jason F. Abraham and Thomas K. Houck remain with the firm. Michael F. Hupy and Dale R. Nikolay recently passed the Illinois Bar exam and were admitted to practice in Illinois.

Phillip B.C. Jones, Kentucky 1992 cum laude, a scientist and attorney, has joined Foley & Lardner's Madison office as an associate in the biotechnology/pharmaceutical group. Formerly of the firm's Washington, D.C., office, where he practiced intellectual property law, Jones focuses on prosecuting and protecting biotechnology patents for domestic and international companies, universities and government institutions.

Carl Jordan, U.W. 1994, has joined Lewis, Clay & Munday P.C., Detroit, Mich., as an associate in the firm's litigation department. Previously, he was an assistant attorney general with the Wisconsin Department of Justice where he served as the AG's designee on Wisconsin Act 292.

Darlene Jozwiak-Boylan, U.W. 1988, has established Boylan Law Office at 9330 W. Lincoln Ave., Suite 2, West Allis. She will continue as a general practitioner with emphasis on small business matters, estate planning, probate, consumer and commercial collections, real estate, tax and litigation.

John D. Kelly, a shareholder with the Hanft, Fride Law Firm of Duluth, Minn., has become a member of the Minnesota Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates. Kelly is president of the firm's litigation practice group, president of the Minnesota Board of Law Examiners and a frequent instructor in trial advocacy programs. Kelly is listed in the Best Lawyers in America and in the Business Guide Book to Law and Leading Attorneys.

Patricia A. Koppa, U.W. 1984, has been appointed Manitowoc County juvenile court commissioner/court commissioner and register-in-probate. Koppa has been in private practice in Manitowoc since 1985.

Tomislav Z. Kuzmanovic, U.W. 1988, has been awarded the Order of the Croatian Crest by Republic of Croatia President Franjo Tudjman. This is the highest nonmilitary civilian honor given by the Croatian government to non-Croatian citizens. The award is given for outstanding individual contributions to Croatia's independence and recognition and for the promotion of democratic values in Croatia. He is a partner in the Milwaukee office of Hinshaw & Culbertson.

John MacIver, U.W. 1955, senior partner in the law firm of Michael, Best & Friedrich's Milwaukee office, received an Honorary Doctor of Laws and Economic Development from the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE). He serves as a regent, secretary and general counsel for MSOE.

W. Scott McAndrew, Minnesota 1987 cum laude, has been named a director at Bell, Metzner, Gierhart & Moore S.C., Madison. He has worked in the firm's litigation department since 1988.

John V. McCoy, Drake 1984, has joined Bode, Schroeder & Carroll S.C., Waukesha, as a shareholder.

Lisa M. Arent, Foley & Lardner, was elected to the Milwaukee Judicial Selection Committee. Liz Wolf received a Service Award for her outstanding contribution to MYLA and the community. Past president Mary Leonard received a Special Recognition Award for her hard work, commitment and dedication to MYLA and to the community.

Mark R. Prichard, Hamline 1990, has opened the Mark R. Prichard Law Office at 411 Jefferson St., Wausau. The firm handles civil litigation matters with emphasis in divorce and family law, Social Security and estate planning.

Cheryl M. Prince, U.W. 1988, has been elected president of the Eleventh District Bar Association. She is a shareholder with the Hanft, Fride Law Firm in Duluth, Minn.

The Winter 1997 edition of Scoreboard ranked Quarles & Brady 16th among U.S. law firms based on the number of financial institution mergers and acquisition transactions it handled in 1996. Scoreboard is a publication of SNL Securities which tracks financial institution mergers and acquisitions. Quarles & Brady is the only Wisconsin law firm to be listed for 1996.

Stephanie G. Rapkin, California Western 1982, DePaul 1990 LL.M., has published an article entitled "Subchapter S and the Estate Planner" in the May 1997 issue of Taxes: The Tax Magazine, a CCH publication.

Three shareholders in Reinhart, Boerner, Van Deuren, Norris & Rieselbach S.C., have been appointed by Gov. Tommy G. Thompson to leadership positions: Michael H. Simpson, U.W. 1975 cum laude, chair of the firm's environmental law department, will serve a three-year term on the Small Business Environmental Council; Richard W. Graber, Boston 1981, a member of the firm's business organizations department, will serve an interim five-year term on the Medical College of Wisconsin Inc.'s Board of Trustees; and Kristin M. Bergstrom, U.W. 1979, a member of the firm's employee benefits department and chair of the State Bar Taxation Section, will serve a three-year term on the Glass Ceiling Commission.

Jane Schlicht, Marquette 1983 summa cum laude, recently joined Cook & Franke S.C. as a shareholder concentrating in business litigation with special emphasis in intellectual property litigation. She has extensive trial experience in complex business disputes and trade secret and intellectual property matters.

Robert A. Selk, U.W. 1974, has taken a leave of absence from his position of assistant attorney general at the Wisconsin Department of Justice to work on judicial reform projects in Central America. In June, he headed a team that evaluated the functioning of the Nicaragua attorney general's office. He currently is a long-term advisor to the Public Ministry of Honduras as that agency implements a reform of its criminal procedure code. The work will be done under contract with the National Center for State Courts. He expects to return to the Department of Justice in November 1998.

Nancy J. Sennett, Northwestern 1979 cum laude, a partner in Foley & Lardner, has been named third vice president of the Wisconsin Alumni Association, the official membership organization for graduates and friends of U.W.-Madison.

Thomas W. Shellander, U.W. 1990, has become a shareholder of Eustice, Albert, Laffey & Fumelle S.C., Sun Prairie and Waunakee. Shellander, a CPA, practices primarily in estate, business and tax planning, real estate, estate administration and business organization and structuring. The name of the firm has been shortened to Eustice, Albert & Laffey S.C.

The St. Croix Valley Bar Association recently elected these officers: president - Jennifer A. Richardson, Spring Valley; president-elect - Liesl E. Nelson, Hudson; secretary - Ronald L. Siler, New Richmond; and treasurer - Daniel P. Murray, River Falls.

Kristine M. Stampen, Texas 1990, has opened a law office at 30 W. Mifflin St., Suite 202, Madison. She will continue her civil litigation practice in insurance, business, Lemon Law, employment, civil rights, warranty, contract, real estate, misrepresentation, personal injury and property damage.

Carlton D. Stansbury, Iowa 1990, authored a chapter in a recently published ABA book, The Joy of Settlement: The Family Lawyer's Guide to Effective Negotiations and Settlement Strategies. The chapter is "Creative Techniques for Breaking the Impasse." Stansbury is a shareholder in the Milwaukee office of Maier & McIlnay.
