    Introducing Yourself to Lawmakers

The end of the legislative session doesn’t mean it’s too late to introduce—or reintroduce--yourself as a constituent.

Apr 27, 2026 – Most of the lawmaking has wrapped up in Madison, and the 2025-26 legislative session is nearly complete. Elected officials are turning their focus from reviewing and passing legislation to campaigning for reelection.

The end of session is still a great time for you to introduce—or reintroduce—yourself as a constituent. Letting them know who you are, what you care about, and how you might be able to help them is a great step toward building a longer-term relationship that will ensure your voice is heard and appreciated when the next legislative session begins.

The State Bar’s advocacy page makes reaching out simple and easy. Instead of looking up names and contact information, go to our Advocacy Network action center, enter your address and zip code, and you will automatically be matched with your elected officials. For some selected topics, there is even a convenient, pre-written message to help guide you.

While all constituent outreach to lawmakers makes a difference, unique messages have a greater impact. Take a few minutes to personalize your message, adding details about yourself, your clients, your practice, and the issues that you care about and would like to see addressed at the Capitol over the coming years. Consider offering yourself as a resource should your legislator have questions about the legal system, the courts, or your area of practice.

Devin Martin Devin Martin is the grassroots outreach coordinator with the State Bar of Wisconsin. He can be reached by email or by phone at (608) 250-6145.

For more tips, the State Bar has created an Advocacy Network Grassroots Toolkit that can guide you through best practices for communicating with your elected officials.

As a member of the State Bar and someone who has intimate knowledge of how the law works, it’s important to use your knowledge and leadership to help direct our state’s lawmaking process. Take some time thinking about what’s important to you and what you’d like your lawmakers to know, and then take a moment to reach out and say hello.
