State Bar of Wisconsin's Statement Regarding Governor's Budget

March 1, 2019 - In response to Governor Evers' budget proposal, the State Bar of Wisconsin President Chris Rogers has issued the following statement:

“The State Bar is very grateful for the support and momentum our key issues have received from Governor Evers and other legislative leaders. The legal system, top to bottom, has serious needs and deserves serious consideration.

“Increasing the private bar rate and adding additional resources to our District Attorneys and State Public Defenders begins the process of restoring our state’s obligation to our justice system. Governor Evers’ plan to return 17-year olds to the juvenile court system gives our youth a second chance at a brighter future. It does so in a system where their needs can be better addressed.

“The State Bar also applauds Governor Evers’ continued commitment to addressing the state’s justice gap, by continuing to fund civil legal services. This modest investment allows more of access to justice for our state’s low and moderate income residents who regularly face critical legal issues without legal assistance.”
