State Bar's Mock Trial Tournament results announced

MADISON, February 11, 2002 - More than 1,500 high school students kicked-off the 19th Annual Wisconsin High School Mock Trial Tournament on Saturday with regional competitions at 16 different locations statewide (results below).

The winning team from each of the regional competitions will advance to the state competition in Madison on March 10 and 11. The winning state team will represent Wisconsin in the National Mock Trial Championship in St. Paul, Minnesota in May. Last year's state champion, Rhinelander High School, went on to finish seventh at the National High School Mock Trial Championship.

Three regional competitions--in Eau Claire, La Crosse and Milwaukee--ended with ties. Those schools will compete in a playoff on Saturday, February 16 to determine which school will compete in the state tournament.

The High School Mock Trial Tournament is designed to develop and test critical thinking and public speaking skills while exposing students to the atmosphere of a real-life trial situation. Teams of six to 12 students will argue a case before a panel of three mock trial judges consisting of actual judges and attorneys.

This year's simulated trial is a wrongful death lawsuit that stems from the death of a high school student, who instead of attending his senior prom, decided to play Russian roulette with two friends and ended up with a fatal gunshot wound to the head.

Hundreds of Wisconsin lawyers and teachers statewide volunteer to coordinate the State Bar's High School Mock Trial tournament annually as a way of educating students about the legal process.
