Bar awards recognize public service projects
MADISON, April 2, 2003 - The State Bar of Wisconsin
is pleased to announce the recipients of its 2001-03 Local Bar Grant
Awards. The honors will be presented in conjunction with the 2003
Wisconsin Bar Leaders' Conference, to be held on Friday, April 4 in
Madison.
Local Bar Grant Awards are given to local and specialty bar
associations that have completed public service projects during the past
two years. To qualify, an association must develop and work on a project
that is novel and has statewide application. The work product must also
be made available for dissemination to other bar associations, and
members must actively participate in developing or implementing the
project. The following entities were able to successfully meet the
competition's criteria:
Award of Achievement
- Lincoln County Bar Association - For the
development and presentation of a curriculum on topics of contractual
obligations.
- Milwaukee Bar Association - For its survey of every
court system in Milwaukee County with the objective of stimulating
improvement in the respective system.
Award of Outstanding Achievement
- Brown County Bar Association - For the development
and distribution of a brochure, translated in Spanish, on what to do in
case of an accident.
- Oneida-Vilas-Forest County Bar Association - For
the production of a videotape on orientation to the family court
mediation process.
- Wisconsin Hispanic Lawyers Association - For the
development and distribution of a booklet in Spanish on immigration
laws.
Award of Exceptional Achievement
- Manitowoc County Bar Association - For the
development of a program on protecting finances in personal
relationships.
- Marathon County Bar Association - For the
development and distribution of booklets, in Hmong, regarding juvenile
criminal, CHIPS proceedings and family law issues.
- Richland County Bar Association - For establishing
a pro se center for post divorce litigation.
- St. Croix Valley Bar Association - For its work on
the 10th Judicial Circuit Pro Se Litigants Project by developing pro se
forms for divorce with children and without children
- Vernon County Bar Association - For the development
of a mediation service in the areas of small claims, juvenile/victim
restitution and minor post-divorce financial disputes.
"Volunteer lawyers and associations are encouraged to follow the lead
of these award winners, and promote a positive image by implementing
programs that meet their community's needs," said Atty. Ben Brantmeier,
chairperson of the Local Bar Grant Competition Subcommittee. "The local
bar grant program is designed to provide seed money for those
programs."
