Chief Justice Abrahamson Announces
Retirement of Justice Donald W. Steinmetz
Madison, Wis. (July 9) -- Chief Justice Shirley S.
Abrahamson issued the following statement today on the retirement of
Justice Donald W. Steinmetz:
"After a lifetime of public service, Justice Donald Steinmetz has
advised me that he will retire this summer, one year short of the end of
his term. Justice Steinmetz has served the people of Wisconsin well in
his 19 years on this Court and in his 14 years on the Milwaukee trial
bench. His opinions, as well as his contributions to the many
court-related boards and committees on which he has served, will serve
us well into the future. I know the entire Court joins me in wishing Don
and Marjorie all the best. He will be missed."
Justice Steinmetz has not set a firm date for his retirement; it will
be July 31 or sometime in August. Governor Tommy Thompson will appoint a
replacement who will have to run for election in the first spring
election in which no other justice is running. That will be April
2000.
