May 17, 2000 - Rock County Reserve Judge Mark J. Farnum has been named the winner of the State Bar of Wisconsin's Jurist Lifetime Achievement Award. Judge Farnum will receive the award at a ceremony at the State Bar Annual Convention June 29th.

Farnum has held public office for a total of 42 years. He was first elected to the bench in 1962 as a Rock County Court Judge, and has also served during his career as Assistant District Attorney and District Attorney.

Maria Lazar, Chair of the bar's Bench/Bar Committee, which awards the honor each year, said, "We are very pleased to honor Judge Farnum. He has always been known to be a fair and impartial judge, one who is honest and well versed in the rules of law."

Following service in WWII, Judge Farnum attended Milton College and University of Wisconsin Law School. In nominating Judge Farnum, Janesville attorneys Tom Basting, Sr. and Tom Hornig stated, "Throughout his career, Judge Farnum has exhibited the essence of what lawyers and the public highly value and refer to as judicial temperament. He ran his courtroom with quiet dignity and with clear authority."

Judge Farnum was recently appointed as the Wisconsin Supreme Court's liaison to the Board of Attorneys Professional Responsibility. He has worked as an acting judge in other Circuit Courts in Wisconsin and was a member of several committees of the Judicial Council.
