State Fairgoers Invited To Participate in Mock Trial
Two statewide legal associations pair up to educate public about justice
system
MADISON, August 9, 2001 - State Fairgoers can get an
inside look at the workings of the justice system by attending a Mock
Trial program at the Wisconsin State Fair in West Allis this
weekend.
"Trial by Jury: The Lawyers' Craft," sponsored by
the State Bar of Wisconsin and the Wisconsin Academy of Trial Lawyers,
will be held on Saturday, August 11 and Sunday, August
12 in the Family Living Center. Trials will be held from
4 to 5:30 p.m. Fairgoers can stop in and watch the live
proceedings free of charge.
The first trial will be a civil case, in which the jury must decide
who was responsible for the injuries that a man received after being hit
by a driver who attended a party hosted by the defendant. The other case
will be a criminal trial to determine whether a young woman should be
found guilty of driving while under the influence of alcohol.
Mock trials, structured like "real" court trials and run by the same
rules, are intended to give the public a better understanding of how the
American justice system works. Audience members are asked to participate
as jurors and are also encouraged to ask questions of the volunteer
judges and attorneys at the end of each trial.
