Governor Proclaims Law Week in Wisconsin
MILWUAKEE, Friday, April 29, 2005 – On behalf
of Governor Jim Doyle, Lieutenant Governor Barbara Lawton will proclaim
May 1-7, 2005 as Law Week in Wisconsin. Nationally promoted every
1st day of May, Law Day encourages national, state and local bars,
businesses, and schools to coordinate community events on how the rule
of law makes our democracy possible. The theme for the 2005 Law Day is
"The American Jury: We the People in Action."
"Law Day is an opportunity for everyone to celebrate and enjoy our
freedoms," said Governor Jim Doyle. "By celebrating Law Week in
Wisconsin we take this opportunity to help people better understand the
jury system, and to show that we appreciate the public's role in making
it effective."
To honor Law Week the State Bar of Wisconsin and the Wisconsin
Academy of Trial Lawyers have created an awareness program with events
during the week.
Monday, May 2: Governor Doyle's Proclamation
presentation at 2:30 p.m. at the Italian Community Center, 631 East
Chicago Street in Milwaukee by Lieutenant Governor Barbara Lawton and
Wisconsin Academy of Trial Lawyers President David Skoglind will
announce the Law Week schedule of events announced.
Tuesday, May 3: A special guest column on the
importance of "Safeguarding Your Right to a Trial by Jury" will appear
in selected newspapers across the state.
Wednesday, May 4: Local attorneys will speak to a
class of Oregon High School students about the importance of juries, the
changing legal profession and what responsibilities 18-year-olds have in
today's society.
Thursday, May 5: the public can call a toll-free
number to speak to an attorney on "Speak to an Attorney Day."
Friday, May 6: TBA
The State Bar of Wisconsin is the mandatory professional
association, created by the Wisconsin Supreme Court, for attorneys who
hold a Wisconsin law license. With more than 21,000 members, the State
Bar aids the courts in improving the administration of justice, provides
continuing legal education for its members to help them maintain their
expertise, and assists Wisconsin lawyers in carrying out community
service initiatives to educate the public about the legal system and the
value of lawyers.
