Riebeau Receives Teacher of the Year Award
MADISON, June 2, 2005 – The State Bar of
Wisconsin's Law-related Education (LRE) Committee announces Barbara
Riebeau, social studies teacher and chairman at Custer High School in
Milwaukee as the recipient of the Teacher of the Year Award.
"In addition to having attorneys speak to her classes about their
rights as citizens, Ms. Riebeau has also invited defense attorneys,
assistant district attorneys, and other legal-system representatives
into her classroom to emphasize students' responsibilities," said award
presenter and LRE Committee member Lindsey Draper, Judicial Court
Commissioner. "Recognizing a teacher who facilitates efforts to educate
her students as to the various aspects of the law and to have
lawyers as a part of those education efforts will hopefully serve as an
incentive to other teachers to work with the Law-related education
committee."
As advisor to the National Honor Society, Riebeau regularly
emphasizes the community-service aspect of students' responsibility, and
continues to seek varied possibilities of community service so that the
students who are academically talented do not lose sight of their
obligations to assist their community.
The State Bar of Wisconsin is the mandatory professional association,
created by the Wisconsin Supreme Court, for attorneys who hold a
Wisconsin law license. With more than 21,000 members, the State Bar aids
the courts in improving the administration of justice, provides
continuing legal education for its members to help them maintain their
expertise, and assists Wisconsin lawyers in carrying out community
service initiatives to educate the public about the legal system and the
value of lawyers.
