Thomas J. Basting, Brennan, Steil & Basting, Madison, won the race for State Bar president-elect, defeating Kent I. Carnell, Lawton & Cates, Madison. Basting received 2,599 votes, Carnell received 2,092 votes. Basting's term begins July 1 when Steve Levine, Madison, succeeds D. Michael Guerin, Milwaukee, as State Bar president.

"First of all, I want to thank all of the lawyers who supported my candidacy and who voted for me," says Basting. "I also want to thank Kent Carnell for his leadership as chair of the Board of Governors and for a vigorous campaign. Kent and I traveled throughout the state during the past few months speaking to and visiting with lawyers on numerous issues important to the Bar. I'm deeply honored that the lawyers of Wisconsin have chosen me to lead them. There are numerous important issues coming up in the future that will affect all lawyers in this state as well as our nonresident members. I intend to listen to their concerns and act not only in their best interests but also, as they will expect, in the best interests of the public and the administration of justice."
