    January 15, 2003

If you want to serve your colleagues and help shape the profession, consider becoming more involved in State Bar activities.

According to Governor Jim Mohr of Hartford, "There is an extraordinarily diverse cross-section of attorneys on the Board of Governors who give very thoughtful consideration to many of the important issues that our profession faces. There are also hundreds of other volunteer attorneys who donate their time to Bar committees, and I am impressed by their devotion to these matters. I encourage all members to get involved in Bar activities."

State Bar offices. While the Nominating Committee recently announced its candidates for president-elect, treasurer, and Judicial Council representative, nominations can still be made by filing a petition signed by 100 active Bar members and filed at the State Bar by Feb. 3. The president-elect serves a one-year term before becoming president. The treasurer serves two years. The Judicial Council representative serves a three-year term.

The Nominating Committee, slate of candidates includes Michelle Behnke, a sole practitioner, and Earl Munson, Boardman Law Firm, both of Madison, for president-elect. Nominees for treasurer are Dean Dietrich, Wausau, and Grant Langley, Milwaukee. Nominees for Judicial Council are Beth Hanan, Milwaukee, and Jim Weis, Rhinelander.

Board of Governors. Districts 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, 11, 13, and 15 elect governors in 2003. District 2 elects seven governors; District 9 elects three governors, and all other districts elect one governor. Governors serve two-year terms. (See district map.) To run for a seat on the Board of Governors, Bar members must submit a petition signed by 10 active members in their district by March 3.

Divisions. The State Bar's Government Lawyers (GLD) and Young Lawyers (YLD) divisions are selecting candidates to run in their 2003 elections. Nonresident Lawyers and Senior Lawyers divisions deadlines were Jan. 15.

GLD members will choose a president-elect, secretary, treasurer, and three division directors to serve two-year terms. Interested GLD members are invited to write to the GLD Nominating Committee in care of the State Bar by Feb. 3.

The YLD is seeking members interested in running for president-elect. Interested members are invited to write to the YLD Nominating Committee Chair in care of the State Bar by Feb. 3. YLD directors and other officers will be elected during the annual meeting in May, by nomination from the floor.
