    November 6, 1998

The State Bar Nominating Committee, chaired by State Bar President-elect Leonard Loeb, has named Gary Bakke and Kathleen Grant as candidates for 1999 State Bar president-elect. Grant is a sole practitioner at Grant Law Office S.C. in Wausau; Bakke is a partner of Bakke Norman S.C. in New Richmond.

For secretary, the committee nominated Thomas Hornig of Brennan, Steil, Basting, & MacDougall S.C., Janesville, and Konrad Tuchscherer of Tuchscherer, Smith, & Rudolph S.C., Wausau. Nominees for the Judicial Council representative are Paul Bucher of the Waukesha County District Attorney's Office, Ruth Bachman of the Ashland County District Attorney's Office, and Gregory Maurice Wesley of Gonzalez, Saggio, Birdsall, & Harlan S.C., Milwaukee.

Candidates for State Bar offices also may be nominated by petition. Petitions must be signed by 100 active Bar members and filed with Executive Director Steve Smay at the State Bar by Dec. 1. Those elected take office July 1, 1999.

Petitions for Board of Governors due Jan. 4. State Bar members interested in running for Board of Governors seats in the February elections must submit a petition, signed by 10 active State Bar members in that candidate's district, to Steve Smay by Jan. 4, 1999 (candidates are encouraged to return petitions by Dec. 11 so that their names appear in the newsletter's January election issue). Districts 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, 11, 13, and 15 elect governors in 1999. District 2 elects seven governors; District 9, three governors; all other districts elect one governor each. The winning candidates serve two-year terms, beginning July 1, 1999.

Completed ballots due by Feb. 5. Ballots for officer and governor elections are mailed no later than Feb. 5, 1999 and must be returned by 5 p.m. on Feb. 19. To receive a petition, contact Jan Marks at the State Bar at (608) 250-6106, (800) 444-9404, ext. 6106.
