    Attorney general candidates debate Oct. 25 at Capitol

    The Republican and Democratic candidates for state attorney general will debate Friday at the Capitol in an event cosponsored by the State Bar of Wisconsin, WisPolitics.com, and WTDY-AM in Madison.

    MADISON, Wis. -- The Republican and Democratic candidates for state attorney general will debate Friday at the Capitol in an event cosponsored by the State Bar of Wisconsin, WisPolitics.com, and WTDY-AM in Madison. It is the only formal debate of the campaign between the two candidates in Madison.

    Republican Vince Biskupic and Democrat Peg Lautenschlager are vying for the post held since 1991 by Democrat Jim Doyle, who is running for governor. Biskupic is the Outagamie County district attorney in Appleton. Lautenschlager is a former Winnebago County district attorney, a former state lawmaker from Fond du Lac, and a former U.S. attorney in Madison. Polls have shown the attorney general race to be a dead heat. This and other late debates will help voters decide who should be the state's top law enforcement officer.

    The debate is open is open to the public and will take place in the Joint Finance Committee room of the state Capitol (fourth floor, room 412-East) from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 25. A moderator, to be announced, will ask candidates screened questions submitted by sponsors and the audience; audience members who want to submit questions must do so by 1:45 p.m. in writing at the event site. Questions also may be submitted via e-mail through www.wispolitics.com.

    The event will be broadcast live outside Madison on the state's distance education network (sites to be announced). WTDY-AM (1670 AM and www.wtdy.com) will broadcast the debate on Saturday at noon; listeners around the state can tune in via the Internet at www.wtdy.com. Other broadcast arrangements are in the works.

    Where and When:

    The debate will be held before an audience in the Joint Finance Committee room (fourth floor, room 412-East) at the Capitol and broadcast live from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 25. over the state's distance education network to audiences at three sites.

    The sites, open to the public, are:

    • Eau Claire UW-Eau Claire, Rm. 1132 Old Library, 105 Garfield St./seats about 35
    • Wausau UW-Marathon, Rm. 218 Main Building, 518 S. 7th Ave./seats about 26
    • Milwaukee UW-Milwaukee, Rm. S250 School of Business, 3202 N. Maryland/seats about 50

    Other broadcast plans:

    • Go to www.wispolitics.com on Friday to find live audio and video links. WisPolitics.com also will post a transcript and coverage of the debate.
    • Go to www.wtdy.com on Saturday at noon for a rebroadcast of the debate. The Wisconsin Radio Network also will make the debate available to member stations around the state from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday.
